    New RRHoF Nominees

    http://music.msn.com/music/article.aspx?news=672007

Personal highlights: JOAN JETT (and it's about damned time), GUNS N' ROSES (personal fave), The Faces/Small Faces, and at last, the Northwest's own HEART. There's some others, too, like Freddie King.

Wonder why SRV hasn't been nominated by now? Oh, yeah-having inducted Madonna and ABBA already, they're probably trying to figure out how to get the Bay City Rollers and New Kids on the Block in first....

    Still waiting:

    DEEP PURPLE!!!!!!!
    RUSH
    KISS
    JUDAS PRIEST
    IRON MAIDEN
    MOTLEY CRUE
    MOTORHEAD
    THE RUNAWAYS
STEVIE RAY VAUGHAN & DOUBLE TROUBLE
    STEPPENWOLF
    MEAT LOAF

    ....and many others.

Once again, RUSH gets rejected. And all the bands you listed deserve to be in as well. I'm happy for Heart. They totally deserve it.

Rush, KISS, Deep Purple and SRV are just inexcusable, glaring omissions IMO.

I also think Randy Rhoads should get in-they have a "sideman" category just for people like him. Clarence Clemons, too.

I didn't know about the sideman category. Yes, Rhodes and Clemmons should be in as individuals in that case. btw, who decides on the nominees?

AND I think Ronnie James Dio deserves some sort of recognition by the HOF as well.

I don't know if you saw the Roger Waters thread, but he's supposed to be on Jimmy Fallon tonight.

Joan Jett going in before Rush and SRV is beyond laughable. In fact, Joan Jett going in at all is laughable IMO. YMMV.

There's a whole generation of girls out there who picked up guitars and started bands specifically because of Joan. Just like there's a whole generation of guys like me who picked up guitars and started bands because of KISS. I imagine the same is true of Nirvana, much as I dislike them myself. But that personal dislike does not mean that I deny their impact and influence.

I hate Nirvana. But I'm pretty sure Kurt Cobain and the band will be inducted as soon as they are eligible. And whether I like them or not, they deserve it.

Yeah, but I think this has to be considered:

There are probably 100 times as many drummers who started playing because of hearing Neil Peart as there are girls who started bands because of hearing Joan Jett. I think her influence is probably overstated. Her music is definitely overrated.

And while Neil is OBVIOUSLY a genius musician-undeniably so-there are many, many more drummers who play drums because they couldn't play anything else. Joan's influence is definitely not overstated among younger female musicians. But I wholeheartedly agree that Rush DEFINITELY needs to be in there, too, and I can't think for the life of me why they're not. It has to be personal biases on the part of the nomination people. That's why KISS isn't in there-Dave Marsh personally doesn't like them.

“Kiss is not a great band, Kiss was never a great band, Kiss never will be a great band, and I have done my share to keep them off the ballot.”-Dave Marsh
    http://www.cityscoopsny.com/?p=62

See what I said about Nirvana above. I hate them, but I am in the minority, and if I were a music industry journalist and RRHoF panelist in his place, I would have the personal and professional integrity to not let my personal feelings cloud that process. In other words, I don't like them, but I'd be the first one to put them on the ballot whether I liked them or not, because that's the right thing to do. But Dave Marsh does not have that level of personal or professional integrity, obviously. Who knows what other bands and artists have been kept out of the RRHoF due to his and other members' personal biases. So, pardon my french, but **** him.

Rush has the longevity, the influence, and the classic songs. So does Deep Purple, for that matter.

They seem to have a bias against hard rock/heavy metal. Van Halen should have been in their 1st year of eligibility, not their 5th... One of the RRHOF guys said that Eddie "taught a whole generation of guitarists to overplay".
They also have a bias against pop/rock groups like Styx, Journey, and Foreigner.

I doubt Rush gives a crap one way or the other. Personally, I'd like for musicians to decide who gets in the RRHoF rather than some worthless POS writer who probably never could play three chords and received too many wedgies in high school.

Where are all these female musicians influenced by Jett? She hasn't had an album on the US charts for 21 years! These girls would have to be at least 25 just to remember her! Maybe you're referring to some that are in their 30's and 40's, but I wouldn't call that "younger."

My guess is Ann and Nancy Wilson have had more of an influence on female musicians than Joan Jett. They had big hits, major musical chops, and knew how to write great songs. Heart definitely deserves to be in the RRHoF. First time I saw them was about two weeks after "Magic Man" had been released, as they were the middle act for a BTO concert at the state fair. Ticket was $5. That was a great show.

Sorry, not trying to be argumentative. I'm just not seeing this big Joan Jett influence. I'll admit to some negative bias after having to twice endure her opening sets in order to see The Police during my college years.

I can't think of a reason why any of those three should be there. To me, the RRHoF should be about artists who somehow changed the genre or influenced others. None of those three did either IMO.

You couldn't be more wrong. A lot of kids I know in their mid-to late teens are HUGE Joan Jett fans.

They're big, too. It's the same deal as with Joan Jett, or with a lot of other older artists that they listen to, male, female, group or solo: the kids found out that the current bands and singers they like were fans of the older artists, so they started checking them out and got really into them.

Ann Wilson can still bring it, too. Talk about pipes!

You probably don't spend a lot of time hanging out with the punk/skater kids between rehearsals.

Johnny Lydon said it best - the RRHoF is a pi$$ stain.

Rush and Iron Maiden are two of the biggest concert draws anywhere - I guess they're getting the last laugh. How many stadiums does Joan Jet play to?

I'm a huge fan of Styx and Journey-kind of so-so about Foreigner-but I can see your point.

And as a Journey fan I can really do without drunk idiots who think they can sing "Don't Stop Believin'"-or pretty much ANY Journey song-at karaoke bars. Say what you will about the band itself, Steve Perry could SING, and most people with a night's worth of shooters in 'em, well, CAN'T so much.

No, but that was a spectacular cover of Breathe. Waters tonight commented that he watched the show and was highly impressed with their performance.

In the Flesh was great but wish they had picked a longer song. But still, very entertaining.

As to the HOF argument, the past several years have been absurd in terms of who is and isn't getting in. I guess Rock and Roll has a much more liberal definition these days. There are many who should be inducted, but for me KISS really leads the pack. I'm not a huge hard rock/heavy metal fan but KISS had a massive influence on those around my age (37) and those a bit older and younger. They maybe weren't the greatest musicians of all time but were hugely popular and very influential from a cultural standpoint. The number of musicians who started playing because of KISS has to be astronomical.
