From what I understand, if the fusion doesn't happen, he doesn't play again.
This is one baby step closer to playing again someday.
Cancer sucks.
People wanting a full answer now aren't being realistic IMHO. 'Course that fire is fueled by the Colts not putting Peyton on IR.

This is a huge hurdle cleared. Now Manning can actually begin rehab to see if the surgeries worked.

When its game time, it's pain time! - Terrible Terry Tate
Nerve damage will be the determining factor in if Manning ever plays again. I've dealt with nerve damage for more than 30 years but that doesn't give me much insight into what Peyton is going to be faced with. Lots have changed, it was around 5 years after my injury that the doctors told me that Montana's injury to his back was almost identical to mine but after his back surgery he went on to play in the NFL for a few more seasons. After my back surgery on a really good day I could make my way to the end of a doubles match in tennis. Now I can remember playing tennis.
More than being able to play again I hope Peyton can live the rest of his life minus the pain and problems I enjoy.

Manning is not on IR because:
1. The team won't be any better with that spot
2. They want to evaluate his abilities in practice with real NFL players before forking over $28m in March
3. He can't practice if he's on IR
4. If there's the thought of retirement, he's allowed to run through that tunnel one last time and take a few farewell snaps.
I'm sure there's more.....

Peyton's talking to reporters right now in front of his locker in the NFL network. Been going in for 15+ minutes. No sound though where I'm having lunch. He's smiling from time to time.
It's a Hoosier thing, you wouldn't understand...
Dang, I took a late lunch because he was supposed to talk at 1:00 -- but I still missed it. If anybody hears what he had to say, please post it here.
EDIT: Recap
I'd describe his words as cautious optimism.
After reading some transcripts today online, I think we collectively know about 100% more than Coach Caldwell knows about any of this.
And after that goal line series that's why the colts are a winless team.
What was that guy in a Colts uniform doing running a punt back toward the kicking team? I was under the impression that the Colts weren't allowed to return punts...
I'd like to say that Orlovsky has earned another start, but aside from the one long drive, he's hardly had the ball.
Three more TDs, and this could get interesting.
But it's really just an excuse to have Brady throw on two out of three downs the rest of the game.
Some encouraging things today. Nobody thought they would win on the road against a decent team.
Painter started out okay and then tailed off. Hopefully Dan-O can keep it going.
Wow, this just got interesting! 31-24! Onside kick coming up.
Oh, so close. Orlovsky and the offense did a great job in the 4th quarter. The defense stepped up and made some stops in the 4th as well. It's been awhile that I've been able to take away some positives about this team after a game this season, despite the loss. I think Dan-O has certainly earned the start for next week.
Orlovsky 30-37, 353 yards, 2TDs
More completions and yards than Brady, in fewer attempts.
Offensive player of the week.![]()
To quote a thread from a few years back: "this proves the Patriots are capable of being beaten" - by winning by a smaller than expected margin.
This contest PROVES THE COLTS ARE CAPABLE OF WINNING.
But put it in perspective. They gained yards and scored points -- but it was against the worst defense in the league.
And they couldn't stop the opposing offense -- but it was one of the top offenses in the league.
So I don't think there was too much revealed today, except that Orlovsky should start the rest of the season when healthy.
On DP Show and other national radio shows last week it sounded as of the Patriots thought they were being disrespected with the smallish points spread they were given coming into the game.
The beatdown they were apparently expecting to give Indy didn't quite materialize.
Nice.
21 points was too small?
BB was certainly saying all the right things about respecting an 0-11 team.
