ESPN has an interesting article on Archie Manning's comments about Peyton and Luck on same team. http://espn.go.com/nfl/story/_/id/73...anapolis-colts

If you were Andrew Luck, would you want to be drafted by the Colts?

Yes, you could potentially learn from Manning for a year or so, but if Peyton is healthy (still a question) do you want to be his back-up for 2-3 years?
Looking at the success some of the rookie QB's have had this year, wouldn't Luck want a chance to start his first year?

If Manning is not healthy do you want to be the guy who has to follow Peyton Manning?

colts fans, what are your thoughts?
After years of fighting and a split, guess what, we are all IndyCar

October will always be a sad racing month for me. RIP Greg and Dan. You both were great and we miss you.

How's Colt McCoy doing for the Browns?

Being starting QB out of the gate isn't always best...

Making the big assumption that Manning heals completely from his injury, I don't quite get this 2-3 years stuff. Manning will be 36 years old next season. Brett Favre put up the following season at age 40: 4202 yds, 33 TD / 7 INT.

Favre was always an exception, but so has been Manning thus far. Again, assuming Manning is healed, I don't think it is far fetched at all that Peyton plays 5 more seasons, particularly if he is record hungry. That's just another factor to put into the Colts analysis of the situation.

Not always, but there is a recent precedent of highly ranked QBs starting from day 1. McCoy was a 3rd round pick coming off shoulder surgery so not sure he is a good analogy, as he only played his rookie season because of injury. In fact, Holmgren publicaly stated he wouldn't start his rookie season. And to be fair to McCoy he doesn't exactly have much of an offensive arsenal to throw to.

There will be some initial struggles with many rookie QBs but that is part of learning the position. Manning's first year there were people calling him a bust. He threw a really high number of interceptions but year 2 on he was fantastic. Aaron Rogers is one of the few who have gone through a "grooming" process and that was because Farve was still healthy and productive and Rogers was not a top pick.

Wherever Luck goes he is going to expect to start. If it's readily apparent he won't I could see him pulling an Eli or an Elway and demanding a trade.

Who really knows about quarterbacks? Peyton Manning played right away. That worked out well. One could venture that Aaron Rodgers would be an even better quarterback today if he had not sat on the bench so long. He certainly would have had a better opportunity to achieve lifetime records had he played. By all indicators it is looking like Christian Ponder of the Vikings and Cam Newton are surviving their rookie baptismals. I don't buy the sit and wait approach. Talent is talent at every position. If you are the best, you should play. If you do subscribe to sit and wait, I would say Aaron Rodgers sat too long.

Let's make a big assumption that Manning can play another 5 years. Can the Colts field a competitive team around him in 2012 or 2013? If they pay him his bonus it would severely impact their ability to re-sign at least some of the following free agents: Garson, Wayne, Saturday, Diem, and Mathis.

It sure doesn't seem that this Colts defense is playoff caliber. The Colts would have to hit this draft out of the park from a defensive standpoint to have a major upgrade next year. They could trade Luck and get picks but they need at least 2 more playmakers on defense. It's not often that you land multiple playmakers in one draft, especially given the Colt's recent draft success.

If not, is he willing to wait to be competitive again?

    With Manning 100%? Yes.

    Good post, btw.

I'm not so sure, especially with the big swing and misses in the draft the last couple of years. If Jerry Hughes would have been worth a crap, you could have let Mathis go, if any of the offensive lineman drafted would have been worth a hoot you could let Diem and Saturday walk. Unfortunately, I think Reggie is gone regardless and I would be ok to part ways with Garcon given his inconsistencies.

The success of the Colts franchise (except this year) the last 3-4 years is due to players drafted in the late 90's and early 2000's...Peyton, Dallas Clark, Saturday, Diem, Reggie Wayne, Freeney and Mathis. Once those players either retire or move on (which will be sooner than later), the terrible NFL drafts the last few years will IMO hurt this team at least 2 or 3 more seasons.

Now, I really hope #18 can play at a high level with the Colts for next year and the forseeable future because I would love for the Colts to trade the #1 draft pick and get oodles of draft picks to hopefully find players to replace the aging veterans.

Heard on ESPN at lunch that Irsay tweeted "not to expect Manning to return in 2011"

ESPN talking heads then asked: "Has Peyton Manning played his last game as a Colt?"

I misunderstood. I thought the ESPN reporter said "tweeted" But I did not misunderstand the second part. The reporter then asked, Has Peyton Manning played his last game as a Colt?"

I think what happened today with the Cardinals & Pujols has some important parallels to the Colts & Manning. I'm a life long Cardinals fan and today was very difficult from a purely emotional standpoint. However, from a business standpoint I think the Cardinals made a good decision in not leveraging the next decade of their franchise to the health & production of one player who is aging, no matter how important to the franchise in terms of identity. I hope the Colts are equally able to separate emotion and logic when making their decision. You can't make decisons based on how you would prefer the story to end. They must be made based on your realistic expectations of how things will likely play out.

The meltdown here will be of epic porportions if Peyton Mannign is the QB for any other team but the Colts. And I totally understand that. for me, it would have been like Craig Biggio playing his lst season or two as a Cardinal and not an Astro.

IMHO, I hope Manning finishes his career with the Colts and Brady with the Pats. But the business end of the game may dictate that Manning is the Seahawks QB next year or the Rams QB. I hate that part of the game.

The 40+ year old fans in Baltimore have to be juiced for this one. They may finally dominate the Colts agin.

1-15 is a really bad team. 0-16 is makes them legendary. As a Colts fan, I prefer the latter.

Colts going for it on fourth and short in opposition territory. FINALLY! Even if they didn't get it, it was the right choice.

And it would have been the right choice the dozen or so previous times this season...

I've never heard anyone say Orlovsky... does it sound like it's spelled.

However I wanted to talk about something else... remember before the season started and some idiot in USA Today questioned if there had ever been a red-headed Quarterback in the NFL. And yes I know this was met with the people wanting to know if Sonny Jurgensen's drapes matched his carpeting or did this writer just not have a clue?

I won't make that mistake... so I'll just ask how many NFL quarterbacks have been Polish?

Don Majkowski played for the Packers and Colts in the 1990s.

Search for "ski" and "sky" on this page. I'm sure they're not all of Polish descent, but a bunch of them probably are.

Just found this on the web (so it's gotta be true):

-SKI vs. -SKY: The rule of thumb ... is that -ski usually is associated with Poles; -sky may be associated with Czechs, Ukrainians, Russians, etc.
