"You know what the trouble about real life is? There's no danger music." - Jim Carey
That's awesome! Thank's Roadster Fan! There were two almost-identical photos of A.J., of which this was one. In the other photo the only difference was that there was no-one in the background, so I chose this one on the offchance that some-one may recognise the guy in the background. I didn't think there was much chance of that happening, but you came through. Cheers!
Thanks, I always look in the background for people to ID.
BTW, Bob Laycock is the father of Dave Laycock who was the Chief Mechanic on the Forbes car that Shorty Templeman drove to 4th place in 1961. Dave was also the Chief for Lloyd Ruby a couple of years and the builder of the Mongoose chassis.
Love your pics, please keep posting them!
Absolutely a thrill to come back to this forum and see these great pictures! Thank you for all of your hard work getting them posted. This was truly in the golden era of the Indy 500!
My pleasure. And in return I want to sincerely thank everyone who has helped putting names to the faces.
Speaking of which, it appears that for the first time ever we've got one pic who no-one can identify... Set08-03. No takers?
How about Chuck Weyant? He failed to qualify in 1961 but had an attempt. Just a wild guess.
Leon Clum?? Also failed to qualify for 1961 Race
Leon Clum---sorry--this is my first attempt at inseting an image in a reply
I think tmorris might be right on the money with Leon Clum.

method to my madness----go to racing reference.com---amazing source....go to indy speedway and 1961 race. The neat thing about that site is that it lists the non-qualifiers as well at the bottom of the box scores. Then I copied and pasted names of the more obscure drivers in google images. Hey---we're all bitten by the Indy 500 historical virus. a sure sign you have it is when you dig for info on drivers like Leon Clum who I had never heard of. My first visit to the track was 1962 for time trials...8 years old.
Ah, yes, that website is a great source. I've actually used it previously to identify certain non-qualifying cars and drivers in this very thread. But in this case without a car number I was definitely stumped, especially since I had never heard of Leon Clum either. Thanks again.

The 4 is Jim Rathmann in Smokies Simonize Special. Best looking car in the 1961 field.

Brings back memories looking back toward T4 and seeing that big old cottonwood tree.
The photos in this thread are remarkable.

Niceguy is correct on both. Leon Clum is in the #77 Dayton Steel Foundry owned by George Walther (Salt's daddy). Did not complete a qualification attempt. Note that Rathmann is still wearing a Cromwell style helmet.

Shirley who? Are you serious? Ha!
The 4th turn tree---Time Trials through 1973--used by all to time cars and then figure out the speed and then make sure Pat Vidan waved the green or yellow flag.
I was told by a few veteran track fans that the tree caught fire in the '64 Sachs-MacD accident and the '73 Swede Savage accident. I would not bet on that fact but still interesting tidbit.
How about the front end tape job in pic 08-16---and our good friend Leon Clum has the deer in the headlights look in 08-17 close up...no wonder he did not complete an attempt. However those were great years to be at the track--innovations, the roadsters, personalities, and some great ingenuity by the mechanics, etc.
Actually that looks a lot like my Mom did back then only that ain't her dog. The dog looks like Uncle Dick's dog... but it ain't his dog... but seriously I could show you a pictures of my Mom from the mid 50s to the early 60s and you would be hard pressed to find any differences...
I'll call mom and ask her if she ever bumped into her doppelganger over at the track.

From this 1973 video of Savage's crash, the pit entrance had not yet been changed by then. There was grass in place alongside the front stretch coming out of the 4th turn. Note the car entering the pit in the foreground of the video. Obviously, the tree was long gone as stated in posts #204 and #205.
Now I think the tree was taken out after either the 1964 race or 1965. Can;t find a good clear 1965 photo...I do have a 1966 photo of the start looking north and the tree is gone.
