Thread: 2012 Indy Lights Silly Season

How about eFormulacarnews totally dissing Daly in their Indy Lights ranking. They have him rates as 9th best! As chosen by their staff! What a joke...

well, they clearly just penalized drivers that didn't compete in the whole season in their standings. I don't think it was TOO unfair, but I would've had him higher too, at least ahead of Victor Garcia. At least they didn't put Duarte Ferreira in their top 10 simply because he showed up to all the races and finished 8th in points.

  3. #123
Yea but they know better. I know they have a better read on Conor's situation than what they reflected in their standings. I feel common sense and better judgement should have prevailed. If they were putting together a FIL team would CD have been their 9th choice? I don't think so.

I also questioned their monthly driver rankings as of late. The point system they've implemented wasn't serving it's purpose IMO.

Peter Dempsey has been employed as a driver coach & consultant since he drove for Juncos in Star Mazda, AFColt Hopefully, he will be one of the full time Juncos Lights drivers for 2012.

GTR, in fairness young Conor was a part-time Indy Lights driver, so perhaps this accounted for the relatively low ranking?

However, I tend to agree that even as a PT driver... the eFormula staff ranked him too low.

That would be pretty great. I actually didn't know he'd coached for Juncos, just that he did do work as a driver coach. Guy's got talent; I hope he gets a full season to show what he can do.

What sort of car counts should we expect for this season - any ideas?

Really too early to tell, but considering we've had a few new teams announced I think slightly better than last year. (I'm guessing 16-18 cars)

Its the biggest issue facing Indycar since the late 1980's..

It is the same reason why the American racing fan has stopped following Indycar racing.. IMO

Peter Dempsey seemed like a pretty cool dude when I met him after the Freedom 100 last year..

Thanks, sounds promising. Well, hmm, better than the last few years at least.

I imagine they'll hover around 20 until Indy, then drop to about 15 for the remainder of the season.

Is there that many new teams to have the ranks swell to 20?

Is there that many ovals that teams would focus on the beginning of the season & not an Indy Only program?

I think what he means is that the season usually starts out stronger in terms of car count, then as teams tear up equipment at Indy and drivers run out of money and/or their checks stop clearing, car counts drop.

Interesting news, Dean Stoneman is apparently shopping for a ride over here:

    http://www.autosport.com/news/report.php/id/96992

For those of you that don't recognize the name, Stoneman won the 2010 F2 championship but was unfortunately sidelined for most of 2011 with testicular cancer. He'll be testing in Vegas on Monday, but no idea with who. He is also chasing a Formula Renault 3.5 ride.

Now that would be something, not just the talent that would come in, but also the story.

You get a few drivers who have funding up to Indy, hoping to secure more money, but things just don't pan out or they lose their crash deposits on a mishap or two.

FYI, Indy Lights has an 18 year old age requirement so Sage Karem has at least one more full year in Star Mazda, potentially two.

Probably ONE... according to Star Mazda & Wikipedia, Sage was born on March 15, 1995

Also, the age requirement for Indy Lights was lowered to 17 last year.

Sage will see some FIL action this year according to my friends at Andretti Autosport.

The only reason it was bumped up to 18 was the cigarette $$$ in the Indycar series. Only the lawyers could explain the logic of that one...

No, I imagine it's more than that.

On the chat with Bryan Herta on Speed he said they will have two full-time cars and will be making an announcement soon.

Alon Day just confirmed at Belardi per their twitter account:

An interesting choice for Belardi. Day has a championship from an Asian series in which no one of worth was competing in, and then placed 4th in German F3 last year (In which Richie Stanaway was the best, Marco Sorensen was 2nd, and everyone else). Granted, he did beat his teammate on a regular basis, but he still has some work to do.

Yeah, he seems like your prototypical "change of scenery" driver - someone who gets decent results in Europe but was probably on the verge of washing out over there. Going to North America gives his career a chance to sort of "reboot", especially if he gets results.

He'll be interesting to follow. He's got one of those resumes that just doesn't tell you much by itself.

He's testing with Andretti on Monday per his tweet this morning.
