Brazilian Lazaro Selegar (and his glamour shots) confirmed with Team Stange:

He's coming straight from karts. He tested a Brazilian F3 car but apparently has decided to go the North American route. Good for him, but it will be a very steep learning curve, especially on a new team with potentially no teammate.

Also, you can probably take Robert La Rocca off the silly season list as he has signed up for another season in F2000 Championship Series with HP Tech.

This is good news. The series champ in each ladder of the Mazda Road to Indy is moving up. Sure seems like things are going in the right direction to me.

Very good news! I saw him dominate the field at Mid-Ohio so it will be cool to see if he can bring it to Star Mazda.

Exactly. The more of that we see, the better!

The Flyin' Finn is the real deal, IMO. The Star Mazda just keeps getting more interesting!

Brandon Reed from Elkhart, IN confirmed for the first 3 rounds (St. Pete, Barber, Indy) in the second Team Stange car:

    http://starmazda.com/news/teams/2012...randonReed.pdf

I can't find any other info on the guy, but it appears this will be his pro debut. (I did find a different kart racer from California named Brandon Reed who appears to be a different guy).

Team Stange - home of two with precisely zero pro racing experience jumping straight to Star Mazda. This should be interesting. At least according to the release, Reed at least has some car racing experience at the SCCA level.

The team and everything is ready to go. There's a huge hangup involving a conflict of interest with team members. I'm not sure she's going to be in a car now.

No. There was other funding that fell through because that sponsor had an issue with a person that Ashley insisted on the team hiring. It really sucks cause it was new team that had been put together.

I'm sure the back story on this will be interesting when I hear it. After all she's been through the past few years I'd hate to see this thing fall through over something stupid.

If it isn't this new team you refer to, there will be other teams willing to take on a funded driver.

UPDATE: Ashley posted on facebook this morning that she was heading out at 2 am for the airport because she was flying to meet her team and for her seat fitting. Seems like something is still a go.

If you do hear the back story, trust me it's interesting to say the least. Yeah, she will sign with someone just not where she was expected to. It really sucks cause the guy who put it together had no other driver.

I'm filling some of the blanks in my mind. Should be an interesting topic of conversation the next time I see some of the interested parties.

What happened to Scuncio last year? He fell off the face of racing mid way through the Star Mazda season?
Had a pretty good season going too.

Some background on Bruno Palli - he's a 20 year old Venezuelan and it appears he has been out of racing since 2009 when he drove in the B-class of European F3 Open (essentially Spanish F3). He didn't do very well there. However, it was a big step as he had gone straight from Venezuelan Formula Ford which isn't exactly a top series and karts. So he's probably not the greatest prospect, but he also isn't the worst and hey, it's just Star Mazda so I won't get too upset.

Andres Mendez confirmed at Team GDT:

    http://www.eformulacarnews.com/news_...6a90ed0159d3ef

Also announcing that Team GDT has really upgraded their engineering staff for this season.

Andres is a 19 year old Colombian. He doesn't really have a lot of pro racing experience but does have a lot of high level karting and driver development under his belt. It will help that he will be with an experienced team and at least have team owner JW Roberts in the other car, who, while he isn't the quickest driver, probably has had more seat time in a Star Mazda car than anyone else in the series.

Yep... he's and Edmonton kid and they put together enough local sponsorship to do those two races. It was a huge jump from the Skip Barber and Ontario Formula Ford he had run in the past but I thought he did a great job of driving within himself and learned a lot in the process. He's been really competitive in everything he's driven and is quite adept at the business side of things. He kind of reminds me of the Canadian version of Andres Krohn.

Yup. Someone on this board stated at one point he was trying to get a FIL ride, but good to see him step back to a level that will probably do a lot more for his development.

How many Star Mazdas were at the test in PBIR over the weekend? Any updates on how it went? Was Friedberg testing? It will be interesting to see how she does and I don't expect much.

    Was Indy Lights there?

Juncos Racing Inks Venezuelan Pair Bruno Palli and Diego Ferreira for 2012 Star Mazda Championship
Duo will Represent “Team Viso Venezuela” Led by IndyCar Driver E.J. Viso

Brownsburg, Ind. (February 13, 2012) – Juncos Racing has signed Venezuelan racing pair Bruno Palli, 20, and Diego Ferreira, 18, to compete in the 2012 Star Mazda Championship presented by Goodyear. Both accomplished racers in their home country and Europe, Palli and Ferreira will migrate their careers to the U.S.A. this season as representatives of “Team Viso Venezuela”, an initiative founded by the duo’s Venezuelan manager and IZOD IndyCar Series driver E.J. Viso. “Team Viso Venezuela” is a program that promotes bringing young talents from the South American country to compete in the Mazda Road to Indy ladder with the help of Venezuelan supporters. The hope is that these racers can then climb through the ranks until they reach the peak of American open-wheel racing, the IZOD IndyCar Series (Juncos Racing currently runs teams in the top two steps of the ladder, the Star Mazda Championship and the Firestone Indy Lights Series).

“After talking with Ricardo (Juncos) for a long time, we concluded that we would start a partnership to bring young drivers into the Mazda Road to Indy and Star Mazda Championship,” commented Viso. “On my side, I thought about the best drivers in Venezuela to bring to the series. I believe that Bruno (Palli) and Diego (Ferreira) will get the job done. I’m very proud to say that I started “Team Viso Venezuela”. I created the program to promote young drivers coming from my country so that they can have a bright future in auto racing. My idea is to manage them and give them all the tools I can for them to have successful careers.”
"It is an honor for us to be working with E.J. Viso and the “Team Viso Venezuela” initiative,” said Team Owner Ricardo Juncos. “This partnership is going to be huge for everyone involved, and it is going to give a lot of opportunities for Venezuelan drivers to race in the U.S.A. I’m excited that Bruno Palli and Diego Ferreira will be some of the first drivers to represent “Team Viso Venezuela”, and I’m so glad to have signed them to be part of the Juncos Racing team this season. We have been testing with Bruno and Diego, and they have really impressed the team so far. They improved a lot over four days and clearly showed that they will be fighting for the top this season. This is the beginning of really good things for Juncos Racing and “Team Viso Venezuela”. We can’t wait to get the 2012 season started."

Palli and Ferreira have had somewhat similar career paths throughout their lives. Like many other racecar drivers, they both started racing go-karts and winning titles in Venezuela at a young age. In 2008, they each made an appearance in the Venezuelan Formula Ford 1600 Championship along with fellow countryman and Star Mazda Championship competitor Carlos Linares, and at the end of 2009, all three participated in a European Formula 3 test in Valencia, Spain. Palli and Ferreira have already completed several successful tests with Juncos Racing this year, two of which were held this past week at Roebling Road and Palm Beach International Raceway.

Bruno Palli has won many karting titles throughout his career such as the Venezuelan Novice MiniKart Champion in 2001, the Viso Cup Champion in 2004, the Venezuelan “Best Pilot Award” in both 2004 and 2005, and the Venezuelan “Driver of the Year Award” and “Karting Athlete of the Year Award” in 2006. In 2008, Palli became the Venezuelan Easykart Runner-Up Champion and competed in two Venezuelan Formula Ford 1600 Races taking a win and a third place finish. The following year, Palli finished fourth in the European Formula 3 Championship, and in 2011, he became the Venezuelan Formula Ford 1600 National Champion as well as the Pan American Easykart Champion.
“I am very excited to join the Juncos Racing team,” stated Palli. “I am really looking forward to competing in the Star Mazda Championship and the Mazda Road Indy program this year. I feel very confident in our team, and I hope to bring many podiums and wins to them this year. It means so much to me and my supporters to have the support of my longtime friend and now manager E.J. (Viso)."

Diego Ferreira is a one-time Regional Karting Champion, a two-time International Karting Champion, and a five-time National Karting Champion that has won such titles as “Driver of the Year” and “Rookie of the Year” by the IRDA, TACV and FVK and a Silver Medal in the 2007 Venezuelan National Games. In 2008, Ferreira competed in one Venezuelan Formula Ford 1600 race, and in 2009, he competed in three races in the series scoring two wins, one second place finish, and third overall in the championship. Also in 2009, he finished third in the Pan American Easykart Championship and completed his aforementioned European Formula 3 test with “Campos Racing”. Last season, Ferreira competed in the Latam Challenge Series Formula 2000 powered by Volkswagen finishing fourth in the novice category, the Venezuelan Rotax Max Challenge (DD2 Senior) finishing fourth, and the Florida Winter Tour (Rotax DD2) finishing fifth.

“I feel very happy and excited to have signed with Juncos Racing,” stated Ferreira. “This was always my plan, and I thank E.J. Viso for making all of this possible. I think it will be a great season for us, and to be able to work with a Venezuelan teammate and friend like Bruno Palli is great. We have been racing together for a long time, and now we will bring "Team Viso Venezuela" to American motorsports. I think the Juncos Racing team has always proven itself to be one of the best in the category which is why we chose to race with them. We have already had some great tests, so we know this was the right step for us."
