In the Nov. Car and Driver there's a feature on a new Humvee that's specially designed to better withstand roadside bombs. It actually has a chimney device near the middle of the vehicle that's supposed to act as a pressure relief valve when a bomb goes off underneath.
There are a whole bunch of other things in the vehicle that are added as bomb protection but what really caught my eye is that the undercarriage was made (paraphrasing here) from the same technology as that found in the energy-absorbing walls of racetracks.
So there will soon be a bunch of Humvees cruising around the middle east with a SAFER barrier welded to the bottom of the chassis!
