Rain Delays World of Outlaws Sprint Car Season Opener
Showers force a doubleheader on Sunday with Saturday’s show as scheduled at Volusia

BARBERVILLE, Fla. - Feb. 17, 2012 - Mother Nature was a villain Friday night at Volusia Speedway Park.
A couple of rainstorms washed out the World of Outlaws season opener in Barberville, Fla., shortly after qualifying had concluded at the 41 st annual UNOH DIRTcar Nationals Presented by Summit Racing Equipment. Tomorrow's race will remain as scheduled with Friday's event set to resume on Sunday afternoon. Hot laps begin at 12:30 p.m.
"It's always disappointing to have that happen, but there's nothing you can do about Mother Nature," twenty-time World of Outlaws champion Steve Kinser said. "There is always tomorrow."
Kinser and 36 other premier drivers qualified with Dale Blaney posting the fastest lap of 12.981 seconds. Joey Saldana qualified second best with a time of 12.983, Brian Ellenberger was third at 13.055, Brad Sweet fourth at 13.058 and Danny Lasoski rounded out the top five with a lap of 13.079 seconds.
However, as the event neared Opening Ceremonies, a storm dumped all over the track and the packed crowd. A couple of minor mists continued to dampen the facility during a four-hour delay. The track crew worked diligently and the racing surface was close to ready when the final storm ended the event around 11:30 p.m.

BARBERVILLE, Fla. - Feb. 18, 2012 - With a sweat-drenched brow and a childlike grin, Danny Lasoski exhaled a sigh of relief in Victory Lane.
For the first time in hours he was able to relax his shoulders and catch his breath after a whirlwind evening at Volusia Speedway Park in Barberville, Fla., for the World of Outlaws season opener. Lasoski's win was also his second of the week at the 41st annual UNOH DIRTcar Nationals Presented by Summit Racing Equipment.
"We had our work cut out for us," he said. "We only got to run one lap in qualifying. We broke a U-joint hot lapping and didn't have time to change it. So I ran as quick a lap as I could with it shaking around."
After timing in 12th quickest, a four-car invert placed Lasoski outside the front row in his heat race. Lasoski - whose team changed the engine before the heat - got the jump over polesitter Jason Meyers and led all eight laps to win, which locked Lasoski into the dash.
He then started on the pole by way of the No. 6 being drawn for the dash invert. Lasoski led all six laps to earn the pole for the 30-lap feature, which paid $10,000 to win.
Lasoski rocketed to the lead on the start until the race's lone caution on lap four bunched the field together again. He chose the bottom line in the double-file restart and again drove to a big advantage before entering lapped traffic on lap 11.
Second-place running Brad Sweet closed to within a car length of Lasoski near the midpoint before a miscue in turn two allowed Lasoski to escape and Sammy Swindell to create a battle for second place.
"I was kind of biding my time," Lasoski said. "I heard somebody getting close and I just dropped the hammer."
Sweet and Swindell put on a thrilling show for several laps while Lasoski pulled away to a half-straightaway lead in the final 10 laps.
"I got to the outside of Danny and then he moved to the top," Sweet said after finishing third. "I definitely cooked my right rear tire and we got a little free at the end and ended up giving up second as well."
Meyers, who started seventh, maneuvered past Swindell with 10 laps remaining and then passed Sweet for second on lap 24.
"I was just waiting for the fuel to come off and the car got really good there toward the end," Meyers said. "Danny's been really good here all week. Danny had some trouble tonight and they overcame that and won the race. So congrats to him and his guys."

Good race - there was passing, just not for the lead. It was weird to not get hit w dirt chunks, even in the front stretch, but that was because the track got soaked the day before. Decided to stay in Ormond Beach last night, rather than drive all the way home, because the WoO double header starts today at 12:30. If no rain, then will hit WoO, followed by TBARA at New Smyrna Spdwy at night.

Here's my interview w Jason Meyers:

    Uh-oh:

Barberville, FL weather - Through 3pm: Showers and thunderstorms developing by noon then becoming widely scattered by mid-afternoon. Temperatures rising towards the mid 70s. Winds WSW at 15 to 20 mph. Chance of rain - 80%

If it rains in the afternoon, I wonder if they will have Part 1 of the doubleheader in the evening, and Part 2 starting at 1 AM? I imagine the stands will be sort of empty for a feature starting after 2:30 AM.

    Day racing on dirt

Schatz Victorious in Under Sunny Skies at Volusia Speedway Park
Four-time champ leads all 20 laps of UNOH DIRTcar Nationals Presented by Summit feature

BARBERVILLE, Fla. - Feb. 19, 2012 - After a week of frustration, Donny Schatz finally caught a break.
The four-time World of Outlaws champion capitalized en route to winning Friday's rain-delayed event, which began early Sunday afternoon at Volusia Speedway Park. Windy conditions and sunny skies presented unique challenges to teams more accustomed to racing under the lights.
Schatz struggled during the first two nights of the UNOH DIRTcar Nationals Presented by Summit Racing Equipment as the veteran failed to advance to the feature both nights. That all changed on Sunday when he won a heat race, the dash and main event.
Schatz's first break came in qualifying when he timed in 16th quickest. It provided him the final position in the invert for the heat races, which placed him on the pole of the fourth-and-final heat. Schatz led all eight laps to advance to the dash, where he caught another break.
"They drew the right number, but we had to have a good car, too," Schatz said.
The random draw was an eight to invert the top eight for the dash. It put Schatz on the pole and he led all six laps on the tricky track to claim the dash victory. That gave Schatz the pole position for the feature, which was trimmed to 20 laps.
"The conditions were about as bad as you could get with the wind, sun and heat," he said. "You just have to be smart. Sometimes you have to go slow to go fast."

    Race 2 of a doubleheader

Dollansky Ends Schatz’s Rule at Volusia Speedway Park
Swindell is overall sprint car champion of UNOH DIRTcar Nationals Presented by Summit

BARBERVILLE, Fla. - Feb. 19, 2012 - Craig Dollansky emerged from his World of Outlaws sprint car and shared the sentiments felt by most of the teams, crew and spectators.
"This was a long day," he said. "It was two nights of racing in one day."
Dollansky capped a World of Outlaws doubleheader on Sunday at Volusia Speedway Park in Barberville, Fla., by outlasting Donny Schatz, who started on the pole and had won every race he had been in all day. Schatz claimed the afternoon feature, which had been delayed since Friday because of rain.

It was also the final event for the sprint car portion of the 41st annual UNOH DIRTcar Nationals Presented by Summit Racing Equipment, which was claimed by Sammy Swindell.
In the nightcap on Sunday, Dollansky entered the 25-lap feature on the outside front row - next to Schatz, who swept the afternoon event and claimed his heat race and the dash prior to feature.

The duo raced side by side - Schatz on the bottom and Dollansky in the high groove against the wall - for nearly a full lap before Dollansky got the edge coming to the flagstand on the opening lap. He maintained the lead while Schatz remained within striking distance for the first dozen laps.

On lap 13, the leaders entered lapped traffic. Three laps later, Schatz rocketed off the bottom in turn two to take the lead only to see Dollansky capitalize on his momentum and regain the top spot entering turn three.

"I had opportunities; I did pass him I think once coming out of (turn) two, got underneath him once going into (turn) three," Schatz said. "We were there. Every time we got to him he was able to get a little better."

David Gravel, who picked up his first career World of Outlaws feature victory last season, joined the mix in the final 10 laps. The top three were separated by a total of a half-dozen car lengths for several laps, and Gravel and Schatz exchanged the runner-up position with two laps remaining.

"We really started catching them there at the end," Gravel said after finishing third. "I thought we really had something and then it started taking rubber on the bottom. Those last few laps it was pretty much just one lane."

One bobble would have cost any of the drivers in the closing laps, but Dollansky was smooth and protected the bottom of the track to pick up his first World of Outlaws victory of the season and second sprint car win of the week.

That's putting it mildly. There was so much tire smoke in the turns, they were driving through a blue haze in the corners - a blue haze of tire smoke. Then the right rear tires starting expolding - I counted 6 right rear tires blown in the day feature. But none of them wrecked - some luck and skill combined. I did not hear any complaining in the stands about the short feature - maybe that had something to do with all the beer I saw being consumed around me - and that the day was a doubleheader.

    Kaeding at Vegas

Kaeding Victorious Under Bright Lights of Vegas

A last-minute decision to head to ‘Sin City’ pays off for reigning King of California

LAS VEGAS - March 8, 2012 - The way Tim Kaeding celebrated, it was as if he hit the jackpot.

In a way, he did. The Californian outlasted a furious battle with Jason Sides and an onslaught of cautions to claim the $10,000 World of Outlaws victory at The Dirt Track at Las Vegas Motor Speedway on a windy Thursday night.

It was his seventh career World of Outlaws feature win and his first since April 24, 2009, at Riverside International Speedway in West Memphis, Ark. And Kaeding celebrated in style.

With fists pumping and several shouts, Kaeding drew a loud cheer from the packed crowd when he hopped out of his car on the fronstretch, hugged almost anyone in sight and climbed on the back of the high-powered race car with his arms held high.

"We weren't even expecting to come here," the reigning King of California said. "About a week and a half ago we made the decision to come.

"It's a hard-fought battle when you can start up front and stay up front with the Outlaws. They're definitely fast on the half miles. Tonight we just got lucky. We just went out, had a lot of fun and enjoyed ourselves."

Kaeding qualified sixth quickest and finished second in his heat race to earn a spot in the dash. The invert for the dash was "six", giving Kaeding the pole. He led all six laps to earn the pole for the feature, which he then commanded for all but two of the 30 laps.

    Saldana at Perris

    Saldana Celebrates in Perris

He picks up first win of season at NAPA Know How SoCal Showdown

PERRIS, Calif. - March 10, 2012 - After celebrating with his hands in the air as he propped himself on the back of his sprint car, Joey Saldana pulled off his helmet to reveal messy hair, a dirty face and a look of exhaustion.

"I think I'm more mentally worn out," he said with a smile. "Physically I feel great."

Saldana led all 30 laps by riding the cushion around the top of Perris Auto Speedway to claim the NAPA Know How SoCal Showdown, which was the first World of Outlaws race at the fast half-mile oval since 2007.

"You don't get these opportunities very often and getting your first one out of the way early in the season is a big asset to the whole season," said Saldana, who became the fifth different winner in five World of Outlaws main events this season.

"I think the key to victory was the dash. Getting around Jason (Meyers) and getting clean air made a huge difference. And just making sure I chose the right spot on those restarts."

Meyers, who started on the pole of the six-lap dash, chose the bottom on a double-file restart midway through the race that determined the first five rows of the feature lineup. Saldana took advantage on the restart and zipped by Meyers on the top as the duo exited turn two. Saldana picked up the win and the pole position for the main event.

"Unfortunately I gave it away in the dash tonight," said Meyers, the two-time defending World of Outlaws champion. "I gave it away on a restart and gave Joey the lead, which gave him the pole for the start of the feature. I just made a mistake tonight. I chose the wrong line on the restart and gave Joey the opportunity to get past me."

Saldana then set a blistering pace during the feature. He was only slowed four times for a caution and chose the outside lane on every double-file restart. Despite being side-by-side with Saldana on each restart, Meyers had his best opportunity on lap 21 when the leaders entered lapped traffic.

Saldana had a couple-second lead quickly erased as he was slowed while trying to lap Austen Wheatley. Meyers closed to the back of Saldana before the final caution of the race for a collision between Jonathan Allard and Bobby McMahan in turn two on lap 23.

Saldana cruised from that restart to record his first victory of the season and his 79th career World of Outlaws main event win.

Tonight's finale has been cancelled because of the rain and cold. Imagine that! Cold in California.

Is it me or are they battling rain at almost every stop?

Seems like at least half the dates have been washed out so far. The 4/14 rain out in Pevely was rescheduled for 10/13.

    Schatz

Schatz Slips through Melee in World of Outlaws Victory at Farmer City
He regains the points lead as Swindell is caught in a crash that wipes out the top four

FARMER CITY, Ill. - April 25, 2012 - There were nearly a half-dozen drivers within striking distance of the lead eight laps into the World of Outlaws feature at Farmer City Raceway on Wednesday.
As the competitors banged wheels and narrowly negotiated lapped traffic, the packed stands took advantage of the first World of Outlaws Sprint Car Series event at the high-banked, quarter-mile oval since 2003.

"When we got to lapped traffic the first go-around, there were four or five guys that could have got the lead at any point," four-time Outlaws champion Donny Schatz said. "It was like a hornets nest. We needed to stay out of that situation and that we did. When the race restarted those guys were all beating and banging on each other around there, and I just stayed out of the way on the bottom and got through there."
The excitement elevated a few levels on a restart following a caution on lap 13 when Shane Stewart and Cody Darrah collided in turn two. Polesitter Kerry Madsen, who led from the drop of the initial green flag, and runner-up Daryn Pittman spun in turn one in front of the field.

Sammy Swindell, who was running fourth, had nowhere to go and skidded into the duo as they slid toward the middle of the track. Third-running Craig Dollansky slid off the top of the track and nearly tipped over during the process to avoid the melee as cars were sideways trying to avoid the mess.
Schatz was there to capitalize. After restarting fifth and maneuvering through the mess, he inherited the lead. Schatz led the final 28 laps of the race to become the first three-time winner this season.

"On the start I got next to Dollansky and he got a good run off into the corner and I needed to slow down because I saw cars in front of us," he said. "I just went to the bottom and was lucky enough to miss them.

"It doesn't help to have guys fall out in front of you. We like earning these races. We've earned plenty of them, but we've had them go that way against us (as well). You had to be smart and stay out of the trouble, and that we did."

The race was anything but over at that point. Brad Sweet, who went from sixth to second during that restart, stayed within a car length of Schatz for most of the race as the track slicked off with each completed lap.

"I'd like to try it over again," Sweet said after a season-best second-place finish. "I don't really know if I could have done anything different. I was just really trying to take care of my tires. It was really slick down in turns one and two. When I was coming off (turn) two I was just trying to take care of my tires and it was kind of on the cushion in (turns) three and four.

"Donny just never made a mistake. I was right there. If he would have made one little mistake or we got some traffic, I think we could have at least made a race out of it. I don't know if we would have been able to beat him or not."
