"Hampered by rain?"Per Jayski
Final Auto Club 400 TV Ratings: Hampered by rain...,
That makes it sound like the race was delayed. IIRC, it started on time as scheduled, and got well past the halfway point in one swoop (i.e., no red flags in the first half to kill momentum). If anything, the threat of rain approaching should have made the first half more interesting and kept people tuned in that would normally tune out at the mid-point and come back at the finish.
I ranted about this in another thread but it really pissed me off so I'd though I'd drop it in here
This is a nascar bash but its relevant. Yesterday during the CA race they ran the entire race with only the caution at the end for the rain that eventually ended the race. CA is notorious for long green flag runs and NASCAR's liberal usage of the debris flags during this event. One can only assume they kept the flags in there pockets due to the need for the race to get to 1/2 way. Fans can hate on street races, hate on the ICS for running those street races but when Helio started to check out you knew he was good to go unless he threw it away or somebody else wrecked. Its not the same at the cab races and I really hate that. Its so frustrating to me to see the series I love get trashed today for putting on a "boring race". Screw the haters I'd rather have a boring race then some manipulated event. It was a total joke and a slap in the face to racing fans to see what happened yesterday in CA. Helio earned that victory with a great pass and great driving. Was I kinda of hoping for a caution to close it up for a bit? A little but at the end of the day Helio had the best car and the field covered and he won the race. Which is exactly how its supposed to be.
I'd rather have 10% of the world interested in the ICS than 50% of US that NASCAR currently has
I saw no laps of the Cup race but after readng the posts here I find it AMAZING that there was no debris on a day where they REALLY wanted to get to halfway + 1 ASAP
Damn near a miracle
Or maybe hot dog wrappers and shop towels on the West Coast dont have as many jagged edges as the hot dog wrappers & shop towels in Charlotte, Atlanta, Dover, etc etc etc

"Ratings Woes"??? The Cup race has been the #1 rated sports entity on TV for at least 3 weekends this season.
Are their ratings at the record levels they used to be? No. That wasn't sustainable. Would most major sports in this country like to trade places with them and have their 'troubles'? Yep.
Heck a lot of sports (including the one run by Randy Bernard and the Hulman-George family) would like to be in the ballpark of what the Nationwide Series gets for their rating. When was the last time a non-Indy 500 IC race got a 1.7 final rating? Was Billy Boat still racing?
I don't think they are going to be shuffled back to TNN anytime soon. They still have a whole lotta eyeballs watching them week-after-week-after-week.

Yes, ratings woes. Have you not looked at the rating trends for the last 5 years?
And yes, they will still have a lot of eyeballs on them, but there is a reason that the sanctioning body & their tv partners have had multiple summits over the past 24 month.
Hint: This thread isn't about the ICS, The George Family, or Randy Bernard.
Ratings were flat compared to last year, per Jayski of course
Martinsville overnight TV Ratings posted: NASCAR Sprint Cup Racing on FOX posted a 3.9/9 metered market rating Sunday for the race from Martinsville Speedway. That’s flat with last year’s performance for the same race on the same weekend, and ranked as the highest-rated event of the day in the meters. Through six races, NASCAR Sprint Cup Racing on FOX is averaging a 4.8/10 in the meters, off -6% from last year’s 5.1/11. (4-2-2012)
Once again. It ranked as the highest-rated event of the day in the meters.
Well I certainly didn't expect it to tie the ten-year low for the race.
Ouch.Sprint Cup: Martinsville Race Ties Ten-Year Low in Overnight Ratings
FOX was able to avoid another decline in overnights for Sunday’s Goody’s Fast Relief 500, but the numbers tied a ten-year low for the race.

Dang, with a 4.8 average rating I guess Cup is in a heap of trouble...
Like I said, Cup is in too much trouble as compared to other series...it was fun while it lasted...maybe they should go to a majority of street races to improve matters...
No idea. How do you tell teams to stop looking for speed?
But I will guess that alot of teams wish they didnt try to keep up with the Joneses when they all built their Racing Industrial parks 5-10 years ago.
Ive seen alot of them since I moved to the area. They are stunning.
But you gotta wonder if some of the stunning buildings were just so much ego candy.
Million dollar landscaping, dancing fountains and rock walls dont make the car 1mph faster.
But the bank still expects the check every month. Just a WAG
Seems like the top teams still feel like they need to roll out a new car every week to stay in the top 5 and Wind tunnels are still required too.
Fuel Injection couldnt have come at a worse time for some of the teams even though it had to be done
Saving money can be very costly.
And, in the face of that... yet another ratings drop:
SMW:
The NASCAR Sprint Cup Samsung Mobile 500 from Texas earned a 3.6 overnight rating on Saturday night, down a tick from last year (3.7), but up 6% from the comparable Subway Fresh Fit 500 from Phoenix in 2010 (3.4).
The 3.6 overnight is the lowest ever for NASCAR’s spring Texas race. Keep in mind the race used to air on Sunday afternoon, a better window for television ratings than Saturday night.
So far this season, six of the eight NASCAR Sprint Cup telecasts on FOX have had a decline in overnight ratings compared to last year.

"It's crazy how the Indianapolis Motor Speedway can make you so emotional. I went from the highest of highs to the lowest of lows in less than 24 hours." - Alex Tagliani
And yet, the Nationwide series isn't having those issues with TV ratings like Cup and IndyCar are so far this year (BTW- Travis Pastrana will be making his NW debut at Richmond on the 27th) :

Texas TV ratings: ESPN2's live telecast of the NASCAR Nationwide Series race at Texas Motor Speedway on Friday night, April 13, earned a 1.2 household coverage rating, averaging 1,656,186 viewers, according to the Nielsen Company. The rating and viewership grew from last year's event, which earned a 1.1 rating and averaged 1,466,234 viewers. Ratings for the NASCAR Nationwide Series are up five percent so far this year across ESPN, ESPN2 and ABC compared to this point last year. Four of the six races have seen ratings and viewership increases over last year.(ESPN)(4-17-2012)

"And yet, the Nationwide series isn't having those issues with TV ratings like Cup and IndyCar are so far this year (BTW- Travis Pastrana will be making his NW debut at Richmond on the 27th)"
Cup isn't that bad off...when was the last time Indy Car didn't have ratings problems...I know it's tough boys...but Cup ain't going anywhere...there is a reason for that...it resonates...
Cant I take one guess why Nationwide is enjoying a bump this year?
