Sonoma TV Ratings posted: For the third straight week, ratings and viewership increased for NASCAR on TNT. Sunday’s NASCAR Sprint Cup Toyota/Save Mart 350 from Sonoma earned a 3.3 U.S. rating and 5.200 million viewers on TNT, up a tick in ratings and virtually even in viewership compared to last year (3.2, 5.188M), and up 22% and 16%, respectively, from 2010 (2.7, 4.479M). The telecast ranks as the third straight Sprint Cup race on TNT to have an increase in ratings and viewership compared to last year. So far this season, NASCAR coverage on TNT has averaged a 3.3 U.S. rating, up 6% from a 3.1 through the comparable point last year.(Sports Media Watch)(6-27-2012)

three races on three very different tracks with three extremely similar ratings.

    Weird!

Seems the NASCAR on TNT viewers don't really give a darn whether it's an oval or a twistie.

    Which is also weird!

Or maybe the boom has stopped and the amount of fans has leveled to just the diehards and not the 'fad' fans. Man, they've lost 70 of the 75 million fans they had a decade ago, where'd they go?

I am not the cause, I watch just as much as I always have, with all motorsports. Which is a lot!

    Agreed..

FOX's lack of talent in the NFL broadcast booths is right there with the race coverage. I feel sorry for fans of NFC teams

  8. #218
While I agree the Fox coverage was bad, TNT didn't cover themselves with Roses this weekend. It was a poorly covered race. The coverage has been shredded everywhere I read on Monday. The amount of commericals raised the most ire but I thought they didn't do enough to cover the rest of the race. Apperently they missed several spins on track. And if your going to have good RC guys deep in the field why don't you at least make an effort to follow them? Like TK in the last row in the 500 a few years ago and I even remember them doing it for Mario one year when he started deep in the 500 field

edit: The 1.6 is a coverage rating... really a 1.4. not sure about the 1.2 from last year.

Double-Digit Rise For Nationwide Series: Saturday’s NASCAR Nationwide Series Sargento 300 from Wisconsin earned a 1.4 U.S. rating and 1.925 million viewers on ESPN, up 27% in ratings and 19% in viewership from last year (1.1, 1.621M). This marks the most-viewed edition of the three-year old race. (ESPN)

As for the coverage rating and U.S. rating, here's the difference: A "coverage rating" measures the number of households that have ESPN on their cable or satellite service who tune in. The "U.S. rating" measures total number of households that tuned in, regardless of if they have ESPN avaiable to them or not

Overnight TV ratings for Kentucky: NASCAR Sprint Cup Series racing on TNT did a 2.6/5 on Saturday night for the Quagder State 400, down -4% from last year's 2.7/5 when the race ran on Saturday night, 7/9/11. This brings TNT's positive start for the Sprint Cup season to a halt as the previous three races were either flat or up over 2011. For four telecasts , NASCAR Sprint Cup Racing is averaging a 3.0/7 in the overnights on TNT, up +3% over last year's 2.9/7.(7-3-2012)

Millions without power in the NASCAR heartland this weekend. Surprised it hasn't been brought up here much, tho I guess those folks offline are pretty quiet.

My sister is in western Virginia, and apparently everything went dark some time Friday. As of Sunday evening it was still out. Walmart was tossing out perishables and closed.

Duh. I didnt even think about that.

    My bad

We lost power for 2 days once but it was cool at the time so you could always put more clothes on.

Losing power in this heat has to be a nightmare

Other than races delayed by rain or other issues, 2.6 is the lowest Cup rating in almost 15 years.

Just thought about this. If theres a region without power during a broadcast of anything, they wouldnt make the share higher or lower right?

Its a percentage of all TVs that are in use at the time is it not?

If theres no power in Anytown, USA then theres no TV sets in use.

    Am I understanding this correctly?

No. TV's off are off. The share number is calculated as a percentage of those in use and tuned to something.

A million TVs without power would effect the rating but not the share.

That was an excellent race from start to finish... too bad it had to go up against the Olympics.

  27. #237
It's down a lot less compared to the other weekends. Almost within 'normal' variations. And to their favor Sunday was a really light Olympic day.

    per Jayski:

Michigan TV Ratings: ESPN's live telecast of the Pure Michigan 400 NASCAR Sprint Cup race at Michigan International Speedway on Sunday, Aug. 19, earned a 3.8 household coverage rating (3.3 U.S. rating), averaging 5,199,791 viewers, according to the Nielsen Company. The race was the first to not air against the Olympics since ESPN took over the NASCAR Sprint Cup schedule at the end of July and the rating was up from a 3.7 for last year's race.

    PER SMW:

Of the 23 NASCAR Sprint Cup races that can be compared to last season, eight have had increases in ratings. Five of those eight races aired on TNT, which only carries six races per season, and two of the eight races took place from Michigan.
