I started a new tradition for me at Indy last year...Oberon mini-keg in the stands on raceday. My lovely bierfrau made a backpack cooler to IMS approved specs which allowed enough size for insulating the 5L of the wonderful Michigan beer.

Other than that it's always been highlife for the rest of the weekend.

What are your beer traditions at the Speedway?

I’m not really a big drinker, but my dad works at the factory that makes the Miller Lite aluminum bottles they use at Indy. So whenever I’m at Indy in May, I usually have 1 or 2 in his honor.

Live to far from the Speedway to attend, so I don't really have a beer tradition but, speaking of Oberon, just tried another fine product of Bell's last week. Hopslam Ale. If your local beer emporium happens to be out of the Oberon, I can highly recommend the Hopslam as a truly worthy raceday alternative.

That is true, though Hopslam is hard to drink in large quantity if you plan on walking afterwards! Two hearted ale is good too. Whereabouts are you located? Cool to hear Bells getting some distance.

I bring two 5 gallon kegs of my All-Grain homebrew. This year it will be my tried and true Iowa Pale Ale.

I have also been working on a British Honey Brown that I am going to bring, it will be called "Brickyard's 98". I have been zeroing in on this recipe since Dan's death in October. It is very close. Ingredients and yeast are on the money. Right now just tweeking the hops.

Will let you where you can get a free glass when we get closer to INDY.

Homebrewed with a buddy for 5-6 years many years ago. 10 gallon batches every two weeks. Half went to friends that funded the process, so we had the fun of making it and free beer for us.


Have to hit the local stores this year to see what interesting stuff they bring in for sale in cans. A couple of stores always make a point of having good beer in IMS approved aluminum cans.

Bells Hopslam is a seasonal ale with a 10% kick. It comes out after the first of the year and will most likely be gone by May if the past is any indicator. With a limited production I doubt it would come in any other way but bottles.

I always buy my can beer in Minnesota or Wisconsin for the race because, quite frankly, selection in Indiana is generally poor and limited to the national companies. This year I am aiming to bring down Surly's which comes only tap in bars locally in the Twin Cities or in 16 oz. cans for take out. There are several Surly brews - Furious, Bender, Cynic...not sure which I will buy yet.

Yup, only time of year I buy beer in cans. Being from Milwaukee...we always try and bring a good selection of classic Milwaukee beer: Schlitz, Blatz, PBR...High Life. We always bring a huge selection to the track with us on Saturday afternoon...we have one of those big roll-along coolers that we jam full...and it's always empty when we leave.

A&W hands down. I also enjoy Boylan's Root and Birch Beers, and I'm going to drink more Triple XXX Root Beer after Dr Pepper screwed over the Dublin plant.

I like Arrogant B****** Ale, Guinness, and Dos Equis. When it's for beer pong or something else then I prefer Keystone Light as a 'pong' beer.

The only thing Keystone Light is good for is beer pong. Plus you can get a 30 pack for less than $20.

Now that I know I can drink a 5L mini keg all by myself in a 3-4 hour period I believe I will get a mini keg of Newcastle for this year's Indy 500 and sit at home and enjoy the race with my favorite beer.

I don't drink at the races. But in the evening when I am watching the tube it's a bottle or two Yuengling. No cans or any other beer brand for me.

I'm not a beer snob, FREE & COLD beer is the best beer, but I do like Dos Equis Ambar (from draft only at any cheap Mexican Restaurant of your choice) and Sun King. However, I'll drink a Coor's Light, Miller Lite, etc and not even complain one bit. Down with beer snobs!

Lucky for me being a homebrewer Northen brewing company sells Surly's kits in extract and all grain. Not clones, but the actual ingrediants from surly's themselves.

As far as Bell's go, oberon is up there on my list, and lucky for race fans Bells is in the process of installing a canning line Otherwise I am always down for a cascade style pale ale, I have a guy local who grows cascade hops so I end up getting 20oz of it for about $5 twice a year. If any homebrewers are interested I have a couple of freezer packed 2oz bags left from this fall

I worked for ASA back in the 90's and a good part of our crew and office staff were from Wisconsin... or as it's known in Indiana "West Consin".

I used to always ask "so who in your family owns a bar?" - I think 100% of the time over three years, there was always a response like "My mom, she started XYZ Place back in 1978 - how'd you know...." Never, ever fails.

Yup. I bring 20 or so Surlys with me during out RV stay. Of course these are supplemented by Summits and some lesser beers. As far as tradition goes, my wife and I each down a Foster's pre-race sitting near the drivers' entrance to Gasoline Alley. Not the best beer, but it's a unique can and it's become something we look forward to each year.

I like Summit for the short height bottles. They make more sense for carrying and storing in an RV as do cans. Wine bottles are a pain to carry as well. We stop at the first Target store after leaving Minnesota to buy their box wine. Why Target? I get a retiree discount.

I liked cans on my pontoon boat simply because I felt more comfortable with them on a boat with an insulated holder and they could be crushed to dispose in the small trash bin.

And, of course, the point of this discussion, you can only bring cans to the race, not bottles.

I like crisp, light lager, which is best brewed by large breweries. Last year it was Stroh's and Miller Light I think. Lady at the liquor store near the speedway tried to pick us up too.

My dream beer is Schaeffer, but you can only find that on the east coast now.

Oh really? That is good to know. Whats the latest on it? Any chance of canned Oberon in my 500 cooler?

Right now I am planning on two Chicago beers that are making strides. Daisy Cutter and Paddy Pale Ale. Both are readily available and in cans.
