Picked up a 12-pack of Sierra Nevada Pale Ale, my favorite house beer, in IMS approved CANS!

Going to pick up a 12-pack of New Belgium Fat Tire Ale in cans too. WOOT!

It has recently been released in the US. They are still setting up distribution so it is only sporadically available currently.

I knew that Fat Tire was available, but it is great news about Sierra Nevada.

Actually, the modern cans preserve and protect beer better than bottles and I think we'll be seeing more microbrews in cans.

I picked a 12-pack of Fat Tire yesterday, so we're set for the next couple for weekends at the track.

You know what goes really well with a Fat Tire Ale? A breaded Tenderloin and track just happens to sell those breaded gems.

I'm out in northern Virginia right now and see Whole Foods Market has a lot of can beer - Sierra Nevada Pale Ale, Yuengling, 1st Amendment and several others. On my current RV trip I am buying nothing but can beer along the way considering I will eventually end up at Indy in another week.

Just wanted to throw out the name Lagunitas IPS which is very good. I live 20 minutes from Great Lakes Brewery and there Wright Pils is also very good

Lagunitas has some nice scores on ratebeer http://www.ratebeer.com/brewers/lagu...-company/1167/ some of the lower ones are often test batches which never make it to full production......it seems to be the latest thing, do up a 15 or 30 barrel batch a month, release it keg only to a few bars and wait for feedback.......then after doing maybe 10 of the same style one may become the next great thing.

I don't take beer to the track because of the inconvenience. But, if any of you are ever in Huntsville, AL, you need to stop by The Nook at 3305 Bob Wallace Ave. It is a smoke-free environment, has a great patio/deck and over 400 different beers. They DO NOT serve Miller, Bud, Coors or any other beers of that ilk. "No NASCAR beers" is what the owner said.

I was in Indy for a few days of practice and could only find Fat Tire in bottles.

Could you direct me to a store not too far from The Track where I can purchase Fat Tire in cans?

    Thanks!

I'm not going to the race, but I do have a few Bell's Pale Ales chilling in fridge for listening to the race tomorrow.

Sorry, I didn't see your request for help until just now. 21st Amendment stores, Kahn's Fine Wines, Vine & Table all carry good beers in cans around races.

So for the race, we had one of them thar foruners stay with us. When I asked what kind of beer he wanted, he asked for Schlitz. OK, its been some 30 years since I had one and I don't have a fond memory of it. Still, to be a good host I went out and purchased a 6-pack.

The guys at the store told me they had recently gone back to the original recipe and that the current version is tasty. I was skeptical, but willing to see what was going on, so I cracked a bottle open, poured it into a pint glass and took my first sip of Schlitz in 30 years. Hey, not too bad for a light lager style beer. I would actually keep a few around for people not into the PA and IPA I normally prefer. It'd also be good when you just need something less heavy.

Schlitz went retro with the bottle beer a few years ago but didn't with the can beer. There was a big and noticeable difference. It is interesting how the big brewers blanded lagers down over the years. Craft and micro brewers brought back tastier beers but mostly in ales, stouts and porters. Good lagers are still hard to find.

Try Scrimshaw or Victory Pils for great craft lagers. Brooklyn Lager is another good one.

At the race I ended up with a pint can of Sierra Nevada Torpedo Ale, a pint can of Surly Furious, 12 oz. cans of 1st Amendment Brew Free or Die, Big Sky IPA and Yuengling Lager. All around me they were drinking Miller Lite and they all expressed envy.

The only bottle beer I bought on my 4 week RV trip this time was Kentucky Bourbon Barrel Ale in Bardstown, KY. I don't think I am going to find that in Minnesota.

Good to know the Schlitz in the bottle and what's in the cans are different. Avoid the cans it is!

I have not seen the Sierra Nevada Torpedo in cans, but I do have it in bottles in the beer frig. I was carrying Sierra Nevada Pale Ale and Fat Tire Ale for all the practice/quals days, but only water for race day.

I've heard the KY Bourbon Barrel Ale is interesting. They have it locally here in Indy. Any good?

I got the Sierra Nevada Torpedo in pint cans at a Wegman's in Fairfax, VA.

The Kentucky Bourbon Barrel Ale is totally different than any other ale. Basically it gets its flavor from aging in used bourbon barrels so picks up the vanilla from the white oak, some latent bourbon and some char. It is a relatively expensive ale sold in 4-packs. It is not something I would drink every day. It is kind of an acquired taste for special occasions or change of pace, or in other words, a novelty drink. I bought it in Bardstown because I am sure I'll never find it in Minnesota.

Pretty much what I thought. Ram Brewery has a couple of Indy locations and they made an ale aged in a Buffalo Trace bourbon barrel. Didn't really do it for me.

Weyerbacher does a similar effort in 12 oz bottles (many only do the expensive corked litre fills) http://www.ratebeer.com/beer/weyerbacher-heresy/36378/ next time you're in the Mid Atlantics you may be able to find it at a decent beer store....

I had some of that bourbon aged beer in Bardstown as well! Along with some bourbon straight. I tad too much bourbon for as it turns out, but when in Bardstown...

Finished my six-pack of Cooper's Pale Ale last night. Have some Sam Adams Summer Ale in the fridge, but I'll probably pick up some Lone Star for the race this weekend, to go for a theme. Order some BBQ brisket, maybe ...

FYI...Ram doesn't bottle. You can only get it on tap at their restaurants. They of course do growlers. Its a chain brewery/restaurant. We have 2 or 3 here in Indy. One is walking distance, albeit a long walk, from my house.

Working on a tall boy Coors Light right now. Its one of our light go-to beers for the track. Working through the leftovers.

Will switch to Fat Tire Ale later to pair up with a mixed green salad for dinner.

I was down to one can of Porkslap IPA so went and stocked up today for guest coming this weekend. My stock in the fridge right now is...

Tonka Brewing Co. Big Island Shandy
Summit Brewing Saga India Pale Ale
Sneaky Pete Imperial IPA (this one has a 10% ABV)
    Ass Kisser Double IPA
    Southern Tier 2XIPA

These are all new brews to me.

I've had the Southern Tier, but that's it from that list. It was good. Definitely a hops bomb, though.

Quiet thread. Just want to say I am getting ready to haul a variety of can beers in my RV through Canada. By the time I get to Alaska I'll be hauling some Canadian beers I'm sure. On our last trip which included the Indy 500 I stuck to can beers not knowing what I might end up with by the time I went to the track. What I discovered is carrying cans in a small RV with a very small refrigerator was a lot more convenient than bottles. I'm just happy there is a craft beer in a can resurgence underway.
