    Peyton Manning Free Agent Thread

I thought it might be appropriate to start a new thread as the Manning hype enters a new phase.

SI's Jim Trotter, who is one of the better NFL sources, says that Seattle is going to take a big run at the future HOFer:

    https://twitter.com/SI_JimTrotter/st...52775992889344

Seahawks are willing to not only pay Manning and sign Wayne, but also adjust the offense to what Manning is accustomed to running.

Gee, wouldn't that apply to every team in the league who could afford him?

I think Manning would want to go a team where it would be packaged deal.

If Manning has to go, I would prefer he go somewhere like Seattle... or Arizona.

Selfishly, me as well. A team where the Colts might never play again while he is still playing or at least not play every year.

I want him to play out his retirement years in relative obscurity...

I wonder if he'll be signed with anybody by this time next year.

Ha! Maybe he'll make enough money with his next team to fly the Indianapolis Colts to the SB to watch him play in it.

I can't think of any Colts fans that wouldn't be happy for him.

You're still convinced that he doesn't have a chance to come back, even after the video of him throwing deep?

According to some reporters, I may have to become a Peyton Manning fan. They say that Manning would be a good fit for a team with a very good defense, a great running back, a former QB as coach, and a great wide out. Michael Silver and a few others suggest that the Texans be at the top of his list.

All the Texans need to do is CUT Matt Schaub.

Hmmm, as much as I would like a healthy Peyton Manning in Houston for a few years to mentor TJ Yates, I don't think it is realistic to cut Schaub.

But this will be fun to watch. And the idea of Manning beating the Colts 2 times a year would be great too.
After years of fighting and a split, guess what, we are all IndyCar

October will always be a sad racing month for me. RIP Greg and Dan. You both were great and we miss you.

I never even thought about him going to the Texans. That team is already scary good.

First Joe Montana, then Peyton Manning? If he lands here in KC... oh, man...

Dan Dakich was just on local STL radio. He stated that he does not know where PM will sign, but said the 3 favorites are NY Jets, Arizona, and Houston. The Jets -because he likes Ryan and they are close to Super Bowl good. Also, the chance to beat New England twice a year would be a draw. Arizona - because they have a track record of changing everything about their offense to bring in a top QB, and they have a great WR under contract. Houston -because they are very close to Super Bowl ready and he would make them a favorite to get there.

Washington is pretty much out as he would not want to be in the same division as his brother. Miami is a mess. Seattle would be trumped by Arizona if the offers were competitive. Plus, in AZ he wouldn't have to play playoff games outdoors in poor weather.
Officer Mitchell, I thought you said you didn't want to have to come back here this evening.

I was waiting for somebody to bring this up -- and it simply doesn't make sense. He had a couple bad playoff games that happened to be played in rough weather, but that's not why he had bad games. He later had several fine performances in rough weather.

Yet, the urban legend persists to this day.

No, game weather is highly unlikely to be a factor in such a decision for a QB like Manning.

The video was probably shot on the same sound stage where the Lunar landings were shot.

I think you are overreacting to this kind of comment. When I've heard it mentioned over the last few weeks it wasn't because of his ability to play outside. Older QBs (heck, older players in general) who get to choose their team no doubt keep that in mind, at least to a degree. We all know that it is less fun to get hit in cold than in warm and as one gets older it is even more apparent.

Maybe someone is out there saying it because of a perception of his abilities in bad weather. But, from the times I've heard national talking heads discuss it I never got that impression. I think it is likely you are reading more into it than is there.

Edit to add - I don't hear the local Indy stuff, so maybe that is where you are getting it. I generally only hear the national folks and Kravitz at times.

I think any precision QB would prefer nice weather for his games, so I think home stadium climate will be something like a "tiebreaker" factor for Manning. If, for example, Manning thought that Arizona and the Jets were his best opportunities/offers, and all else was nearly equal, that he'd pick Arizona.

Hmmm, does Matt Schaub need to start talking to a real estate agent?

mstove, the the comments I was reading yesterday repeated the old, false legend about how Manning is a "dome" quarterback who was unsuccessful in winter weather.

Has a great QB ever mentioned weather as a factor in signing with a new team? Or is this persistent theme based entirely on speculation and assumption? I don't know the answer, so I'm really asking.

It still strikes me as nothing more than urban legend. If it's truly a consideration, I'd think it would be very low on the list of considerations.

I'm going to guess he won't go to Houston. I feel Peyton does not want to play in the Colts' division. Just my hunch, nothing else.

The Houston talk has really come out of nowhere today. Schaub is an awfully good QB to let go for the kind of risk that Peyton comes with. I hope it doesn't happen, but they sure would be good if it does and he's healthy for a couple of years.

I don't think Manning will look as closely to a cold weather environment, and it is not only because of the " he is a dome or warm weather guy" but stop and think of his injuries, sloppy or frozen slick surfaces in cold/snowy or cold/rainy weather just does not seem ideal for Peyton

Would love to see him at San Fran, not likley though

Miami has some weapons....a good offensive line, especially LT in Jake Long, a good TE in Fassano, Reggie Bush catching the ball out of the backfield, Brandon Marshall and if Reggie Wayne comes along....could be a good fit for #18.

Seattle is rumored to be looking at a 'package deal' of Reggie Wayne and Peyton.

On paper, it makes sense. Seattle has a solid defense with the best young secondary in the NFL. They have an improving, stout offensive line with Tom Cable coaching, they just re-signed RB Marshawn Lynch and have a good running game to take the pressure off. They have Sidney Rice and a couple of solid kids at WR, Zack Miller and John Carlson at TE.

Seattle won 7 games last year and in their 9 losses, they were within 7 points with 4 minutes to go in 7 of those. Seattle with Tavaris jackson is a .500 team, with even an above average Qb, Seattle is a threat to go deep into the playoffs. With a healthy Peyton Manning, they are an instant Super Bowl contender.

They can't get Luck. They don't want to mortgage the future for RGIII so that leaves an FA or the 3rd best QB. They have reportedly decided against Matt Flynn so the choice for them is draft Ryan Tannehill or Brandon Weeden or sign Peyton or Kyle Orton and then mortgage the future for Matt Barkley next year.

Peyton on paper is a good fit - but i just think this is the direction the current FO wants to go. My gut tells me that they will not match the offers for Peyton that will come from the Redskins and Miami. They'll draft a pass rusher at #12 and then take Weeden if he is still there in round 2 - which he won't be.

I think Peyton lands in Miami.

Well, that makes a huge assumption that any playoff games would actually be home games.

This was Dan Dakich's comment, not mine. I am simply reporting what he said.

I don't think any player has ever said he wanted to be somewhere because of the weather - at least not when playing. However, plenty of ex-players when discussing free agency options have brought it up over the years (no, I don't have a quote but it isn't something I've only heard once, either). And, it is quite logical that if you get to pick your location, and other things are equal, one more factor would be comfort. Either for your family, for practicing (types of facilities, etc.) and on game day. I can't imagine any player would consider it number one, but it hardly strikes me as being "urban legend".

FTR - I also don't recall anyone saying he is going somewhere because of the money, but I don't think that is an urban legend, either.
