My friends @ Red Barn Campground are telling me that they were only @ 35% capacity for the weekend. Their worst weekend since the frozen out March date.

the 100,000 at Bristol is still 100,000 people,,,

    Great Post,,,

If you think there were 100,000 at Bristol today, think again. Joy/McReynolds have always overexaggerated the race attendance. Not referring to you, Hawaii, but I wouldnt believe that fans are naive enough to believe the nonsense that spills out of the mouths of the Waltrips, McReynolds, Kyle Petty but sadly there are fans that do.

Outside of that, all that adding banking does to a track is make it easier.

Everyone here is underestimating how ******* the typical Bristol attendee is. These people crave and love wrecks. Some of the people I work with will call a race bad if there's no wrecks.

When they took away the need to wreck, the fanbase went away.

How exactly did Brad K. get to the lead? He didn't start there. There's still plenty of passing at Bristol, it's just earned instead of stolen. Bristol fans would rather see it stolen.

Computer simulation, media coverage, over-saturation, economy, fuel prices, track reconfiguration, COT seem to be portions of a "perfect storm" it seems. Unfortunately, the value of travel to distant races has lessened as the dollars become tighter and the necessities become more of the priority than the discretionary. The "want" by some for the price of a gallon of gasoline to be the same as it is in Europe will only lead to a "brighter" future for spending more time at home.

I never watch basketball so I cannot comment on that.

I will leave that up to the sarcasm police to decide.

I let you know when they get back to me on that.

Win, lose or draw I don't think Bristol would be selling 160k tickets for the spring race regardless of the economy at this point.

I tbought they had 100K but not a hell of a lot over that. Lots of bare aluminum up high, especially on the back side.

From what I saw it seemed that because of the heavy rain in the am several ticker holders got an early start for home taking a chance on whether there would be a race today....They lost the roll of the dice..My undeucated guess puts attendance around 90,000...............Vickers done good but all of MWR's drivers did well today..............

If there was 100,000 at Bristol yesterday, the capacity must be 500,000.

I think you probably covered all of the main problems. The economy is the big pink elephant in the living room. And who wants to watch a race with a half dozen or more cars are start-and-park? The Nationwide race only had about 10-15 cars that were actually "racing". The remainder that weren't parked early seemed to be just surviving and putting in laps.

But NASCAR may be paying a price for past popularity as well. When they were filling stadium tracks (like Bristol), TV networks were fighting over each other to sign long term contracts. They paid a lot of money and need to recoup that investment. So now the TV coverage is often ads for 1/3 of the total broadcast time, with that being heavily weighted to the early parts of an event. It seems that ads are closer to 1/2 of the air time early in races.

There is no better way to lose an audience than annoying them with tons' of ads. Add in TV production that is filled with corny filler and announcers that are so annoying I wear out the mute button, and I know I am losing interest. Just when is Larry Mac going to learn the English language? If I hear one more "boogidy......"

Lose the TV audience, and where are new fans going to come from to fill the "stadium"?

SpeedTV did a bit on Friday about sport venue seating capacity. They listed Bristol at 160,000. No way they had more than 80k on Sunday. They may have sold more than that in seats as sponsors buy lots of tickets to give away, but that place was 1/2 full at best.

I think NASCAR needs to drop Bristol and go to Knoxville for a street race.

The tough-to-get Bristol ticket was the summer night race...that would be a better indicator.

Oooh and you could run right by the Tennessee River. Think of the setting and the possiblility for boaters to enjoy the race festivities from Volunteer Landing.

80,000? That would be Indycars 2nd biggest crowd of the year. Just throwing in some needed perspective.

Yes, and sponsors are the ones with perspective and they're for sure not abandoning NASCAR for indycar.

Playing the Indycar comparison smells of desperation.

Thye need to paint the seats assorted colors like at Lowes, then the aluminum doesn't show as badly.
