I thought in the static views I saw and a couple of short videos that the new car looked swoopy, even a little futuristic.
Wrong.
Covered with livery and set up with road course wings, they just look bulbous and dumb.

Too much bodywork and not enough horsepower.
Besides ugly, these cars look slow.
I agree they look slow, really good grippy and calm in the corners but they just don't accellerate hard enough visually for my taste. I don't mind their looks though.
Was this worth a thread? Really?
"Unfortunately, the business types who now permeate the sport don't share this same gut centered devotion. I can only hope that the truly addicted will prevail, and that the original spirit of open wheel competition will somehow manage to survive and prosper into the future."

I think they look great. YMMV.

"Make way. I'm Reaganing."
I thought the same thing. In pics they looked ok. As I watched the race I kept thinking, "They look huge.....and slow"
--shrug--
I really don't know. That's just how it appears to me, compared to the old cars.
Seriously--I think it's the flared bodywork in the back. It draws your eye like no other part of the car, so your eye focuses there and misses the speed. Kind of like focusing on one blade of a spinning fan--the whole mechanism seems to slow down.
Maybe if I just keep my eyes off its ass I'll be all right. Good general advice in life, y'know?![]()

I am opposite: I am ok with the look, I hate the sound.
So down and depressing to hear![]()
For me, love the sound, like the front of the car, Hate the rear of the car ( I don't mean the bumper) Hopefully the body kit designers will have enough freedom to make a difference. And yes, more power would be fun, but it's the first year of those engines, I expect them to increase hp in years to come.
The bumper takes some getting used to.
I honestly didn't care if the engines were normally aspirated or turbocharged, they sound fine to me.
I think its the sound, they seem fast enough but it doesn't SCREAM like you would like it too. Too me its the SOUND of the cars very muffled.
I Hate the view from behind, the bumper, looks like the bumper cars at Hershey Park!
I like them. They could use more HP, but it seems like they actually can pass; it's just that video of those passes is classified, or at least that's how ABC acts.
I do like the look of the new car but the chassis has given us a great race. A lot of teams mixing it up in front, some attrition, and a great race overall. We've got a year with the aero package.
I like the cars....

"It's crazy how the Indianapolis Motor Speedway can make you so emotional. I went from the highest of highs to the lowest of lows in less than 24 hours." - Alex Tagliani
From the rear, they look like hovercrafts.
More Power !!
I'm not one to complain much, but since this thread is already here: just when this car was starting to grow a little bit on me, I see this car race. It's just awful to look at, I almost would've rather closed my eyes. The cars look like dragsters with their parachutes opened, both in design as in feeling of speed. Get rid of those bumpers, too wide sidepods and the way too long and wide underwing, and I might actually like them.

With respect my friend, your comments are a bit funny (but I totally agree with 'em). However, that would be like saying the Pontiac Aztek is growing on me...
... if the designers changed the front end... the rear end, the C-Pilar, the wheels, etc![]()

The side pods, bumpers & underwing are a major part of the overall Indycar design & changing them would greatly change the whole look of this car. Keep praying for the 2013 aero kits... its our chance to beautify the ICS!!!

I thought cars looked great and sounded fine.
The anti bumper crowd that was complaining about carbon fiber everywhere and thought this was an aero piece....epic fail y'all. I didnt see anyone change a bumper, and they did get hit
"I think there's only so many people that can take care of themselves, and can take care of other people. And the rest of the people … they're useful in terms of compost for the whole planet, you know." - Bill Murray
The reason why they looked slow is because they were on a slow circuit.....I'm sure they'll come alive when we see them in the faster turns. (The ovals, Sonoma esses etc). I love the on boards, the rear wheel views and airbox cameras in particular. The lack of sidepods on airbox view reminds me of the Brabham BT52. Very cool.
Just saw the thread and way behind but my first and only comment is, where does the OP get off calling these new thoughts. This is what we have been hearing from many here since the announcement. If you want to B&M at least admit your jumping on the band wagon not pulling it.
Congratulations to RHR, & all the winning drivers & teams in the fantastic 2012 season. Looking forward to 2013!
