Thread: New thoughts on the new cars

  1. #31
I like the new cars. The liveries are pretty sweet as well. But I agree that they could use 200 more bhp. Can they fit V-8 turbos?

No race car will ever be as ugly as the rolling brick COT.

This is a video for those who think that the new car looks slow:

We all know that the 2003 champcars were very fast beasts, yet they do not look faster than the DW12 at the St. Pete track, do they? So, what's the problem??

The problem is that everyone on TF loves whining... they're running basically the same laptimes.

Hey, the new Daytona Prototyes are a hell of a lot better looking than the old ones. they almost look like elongated GT40 style cars. the corvette even looks like a Corvette.

I can live with the looks, they are ok, but the sound is terrible, ugh, who thought these would be better sounding. They are much much better then the whiny f1 cars, but they just sound dull.

The difference is the hp. Look at the way they fight the car to get power down. A lot of the cars get the rear sideways coming out of corners. You can visibly see the cars accelerating faster, too. The new cars may be a little bit quicker, but that's because of the carbon brakes and the higher downforce. If they add more hp, these cars will be wicked fast.

Kinda OT on the looks, I didn't see anyone smoke the tires in the pits, anything up with that? Quite a few pit stops under green too.

Get rid of those bumpers, too wide sidepods and the way too long and wide underwing, and I might actually like them.
With respect my friend, your comments are a bit funny (but I totally agree with 'em). However, that would be like saying the Pontiac Aztek is growing on me...

... if the designers changed the front end... the rear end, the C-Pilar, the wheels, etc

The side pods, bumpers & underwing are a major part of the overall Indycar design & changing them would greatly change the whole look of this car. Keep praying for the 2013 aero kits... its our chance to beautify the ICS!!!

I agree. But it's like watching a 190 lb wideout and a 275 lb defensive end run the same 40 time. Everybody will say the sleek chassis is faster.
Having said that, it looks like the goal of building a "bumper car" has been met and we saw contact without catastrophe.

Those cart cars sound so much better...

With gas @$4.00+ a gallon... smaller engines are here to stay. F1 engines with 4 & 6 cylinders have produced 800-1000 HP... 1200HP qualifying engines

I'm surprised there have been so many complaints regarding the sound. People wanted turbos, people have turbos, and it's still not good enough.

I'm blaming the sounds on ABC. There is no way they sound that quiet in real life. They had to be messing with the sound because the in-car sounds were amazing.

Well, I agree. They could add around 100 hp more. However, at this point they should make the cars more reliable first before thinking about raising the hp. And I really think the cars do not look that slow at all. I just have to wait till Indy. There you can really see how fast or slow a car is.

The old BMW engine was putting out 1200, but that was all the dyno would measure!

Actually, I like the sound much better than the sound of the old cars. However, I would like to hear the new engines at 15000 revs

The cars were twitchy at times. They need more power for sure. The looks could be better but they could be worse... They raced in pretty close quarters without too many issues - that is saying something....

I think, all-in-all it is time to accept that this is what we have and to stop the aimless complaining - constructive and realistic criticism is a wonderful thing - but - enough of "its ugly" with no REALISTIC suggestions for improvement - if you want the series to get better you can't be beating it down all the time......

The McLaren MP4/27's nose looks just fine & lightyears sexier than the ICS Dallara.

F1 cars are like a fitness model who attempted MMA competition... she still has sexy, streamlined shapes, but needs a good plastic surgeon to fix her NOSE!!!

The 2012 GA/DP's have been given a make over... only the 1st & 2nd generation DP's make the ICS Dallara look like a super model...

Looks like a pregnant platypus with a buffet table across the back.
Then WTF does the 2012 Indycar look like???

They're new, distinctive, possibly faster, probably safer, much more economic, and helped ensure more participation this year, so of course people are complaining.

Luckily, the looks have nothing to do with anything that has to do with racing, except to attract fans that don't fully appreciate or understand what 'faster' is, anyway

Since when does anyone with a brain design a racing car based on subjective looks?

I'll tell you what I did see today..... I saw several front tires bump off the rear wheel fairing and continue. We should have had this design mandate 20 years ago.

I thought cars looked great and sounded fine.

The anti bumper crowd that was complaining about carbon fiber everywhere and thought this was an aero piece....epic fail y'all. I didnt see anyone change a bumper, and they did get hit

As much as I hate the unnecessary airbox I can live with it but those bumpers are just embarrassing and a boarder line deal breaker. It just gives off a whole indoor kart track vibe.

They looked like the next generation of Indy Cars to me. Will they take time to get used to, sure....but it is what it is. Remember how horrendous the first generation IRL cars were? Big, boxy and noisy!
    Real drivers don't need fenders!

The reason why they looked slow is because they were on a slow circuit.....I'm sure they'll come alive when we see them in the faster turns. (The ovals, Sonoma esses etc). I love the on boards, the rear wheel views and airbox cameras in particular. The lack of sidepods on airbox view reminds me of the Brabham BT52. Very cool.

And I don't think too many people were fond of those "funny cars" when they showed up in the early 60's... sometimes it is about adjusting to change...

I agree with the guy about a few cars bumping and continuing - I think we are going to see more aggressive racing on road and street courses with fewer consequences later this year....
