The BASEBALL THREAD - for all MLB fans

We usually have a Cincinnati Reds thread and sometimes a Cubs thread. Maybe we could all come together here in a spirit of unity...or make fun of each other.

Good...I was thinking of starting a Phillies thread, but figured it would end up being just me and TD.

Phils up 3-1 over the "Miami" Marlins. Trying to get to .500

Direct TV has an Extra Innings preview, through the 15th I believe. Games galore.

Die-hard Chisox fan here. I'm fairly pleased that they have started 3-2 all on the road. The home opener is Friday against the dreaded Tigers. Not sure anyone in the AL Central will have anything for them. They are loaded.

I like the Cardinals, but I also like the Sox too. I see Ozzie is still at it even in Miami.

I have a lot of respect for the Cardinals organization and their fans. But if I were rooting for an NL Central team it would be the Brewers. We've went to several games up there during the IC/Cart races over the years. Their new ballpark is outstanding.

I almost always got a kick out of Ozzie and his antics. The only stuff that I really didn't like was the stuff that included his son. As for his recent comments down in Miami...Oh man.

Oh yeah, not exactly the thing you'd want to say down there. I've found him entertaining at times, then other times he'd astonish me. When I saw his recent comments, I had to shake my head.

As for the Sox, I've not followed them too much this year. What's the story with Jake Peavy? It seems like whenever I hear about the guy, he's hurt again or on the verge of a comeback.

As of right now Peavy is healthy(by the time you read this he may not be lol). I believe he is 2nd in the rotation. He doesn't seem to have quite the velocity that he used to have. Perhaps this is the year he will last an entire season. But I wouldn't bet on it.

Hopefully he avoids the injury bug this year. Its too bad about how things have gone for him. I got acquainted with him while I lived in Phoenix going to D-Backs games and he was with the Padres. A very good pitcher those days.

The Seattle Mariners have been in MLB since 1977. Since then, they've had 18 managers. Only Lou Pinella had a winning record.

And before that they briefly had the long forgotten Seattle Pilots. Enough said.

Wanna know what's wrong with NASCAR? They've gone from Junior Johnson to Jimmie Johnson.

Wanna know what's wrong with IndyCar? It's gone from dirt ovals to street races.

    Diamondbacks are 5-1

Feel pretty good about chances this year. Pitching staff is pretty good, and if anyone falters there's Bauer, Skaggs, Corbin etc waiting in the minors. Pretty good lineup. Chris Young is having a hell of a start to the season, which is good to see.

Once again the Reds are hard to figure out--so much young talent and what looked like a solid pitching rotation and bullpen. We've left 3,000 runners on base already (my numbers may be off a little) and we lost to the Nats on a stupid wild pitch.

    Haters gonna hate.

It should be a very educational weekend for the Cubbies. They will get to see a weekend celebration of a World Championship. Special events each day. Friday home opener with on field parade. On Saturday every fan in attendance will receive a replica World Championship Ring. (The rings are manufactured by Jostens and are the same quality as the class rings they sell. Ticket prices have been adjusted for this, but definitely a cool way to thank the fans.) The team will wear special commemorative jerseys on Friday and Saturday. (Gold letters and numerals with the Birds perched on a golden bat.)

Overall, the NL Central should be a fun race this year. The Brewers, Cardinals, and Reds are all solid teams. Each with definite strengths and weaknesses. If they all stay healthy it should be an exciting summer.
Officer Mitchell, I thought you said you didn't want to have to come back here this evening.

It's true, we HATE the Cards. I respect them and LOVE the ballpark, but I still hate them...in a GOOD WAY.

Washington's off to a fast start. Did I hear correctly that Drew Storen is out for the season?

Went to the getaway game yesterday. Saw a guy with an old Pilots jersey on.

At this point they are guessing that it will be two months.

In high school, as part of a class project I sent a bunch of business letters to various baseball teams to see what I could get back. The goal was, we hoped to decorate our classroom with a bunch of sports memorabilia, decals, and things like that.

The Cardinals sent me a real nice response with a voucher for two free tickets anytime during the regular season, excluding opening weekend or the playoffs. I got to keep them of course, until my mom told me there was no way in h**l she was going to drive from Indy to St. Louis for a baseball game. I still like to remind her of that. I ended up giving them to my teacher and letting him use them. I've been a Cards fan to this day. In 2006, I did finally get to see them play in person, only it was at Chase Field in Phoenix.

The worst part, that was the same season (1997) that they got Mark McGwire... Regardless of what's happened with Big Mac the last few years, he was always one of my favorites, especially when I was younger.

As for the Brewers, I'd like to check out Miller Park someday. It looks like a gorgeous facility.

I had the pleasure of attending Reds games back-to-back at Wrigley and Miller Park a couple years ago.

Whereas Wrigley has perfected the old, Miller has perfected the modern. The Reds' park is okay, but it's still far behind Wrigley and Miller.

I always though the Reds new stadium looked cooler than Miller Park, but I have been to neither.

There's nothing really special about GABP. They have the "riverboat" and smokestacks in the outfield, but other than that it's a utilitarian stadium. That's not to be negative at all; it simply doesn't cry out for excessive praise.

I do enjoy sitting in the moondeck/sundeck though.

Growing up in the 50's I loved the diversity of fields; Ebbets, Polo Grounds, Crosley, Fenway, etc.
