The Reds simple put cannot hit right now. Votto can't do it all and Phillips is hurting. Their 3rd or 4th leading hitter is Arroya, their #3 starting pitcher. Stubbs is still swinging at anything that comes his way.

Sounds like Citi Field for the Mets. It was where fly balls went to die last year. This year, with some modifications, much more hitter-friendly. The Phil's rookie 2B Galvis actually parked one.

To my surprise we caught a flight to Philadelphia where we had reservations at the Embassy Suites & tickets to 3 of the Phillies home games. The funny thing is that I was so thrilled to be among 40,000+ Phillies fans (very rarely do I find ONE) and so thrilled to be in Citizens Bank Ballpark that I didn't want to leave when the first game was over.
That is a great wife. Mine will tolerate one game a year when the Phils come visit the 'stros. Haven't been to the Bank...saw a few games in the Vet, terrible place for baseball.

One of my favorites of the new parks is PNC in Pittsburgh. It is absolutely gorgeous. Coors Field is pretty great too.

Another Mariners fan; moved to Seattle from England in the middle of the amazing 2001 season. It's been rather frustrating since.

Safeco is amazing, a lot of good memories there: First MLB game (Freddy Garcia held the BoSox to 1 run in a 3-1 victory), and the first time I watched the USA national soccer team (4-0 win against Honduras in 2002).

Forza: Glad to see that you appreciate our American version or rounders/cricket. I was over in the UK two times in the last year (and headed there again next month) and loved your sport fans.

Don't you remember last year? The Reds ALWAYS win the final game of a series.

They're already 3-0 in final games this year, and 1-6 in all other games.

He was .231 through May 3 last year. A slow start seems to be his m.o. these days.

I'm still trying to blank "last year" out of my system. Thanks for reminding me!

Seattle opened their season - very quietly - in China where they split 1-1 with the A's. They came back to the US, played some exhibitions (???) and then played 2 more that counted against the A's, took both. Off to Texas for 4 where they went 1-3 against the powerful Rangers and then home for 3 more .... against the A's. They are now 6-5, have played 11 games, 8 of them against the A's. I'm looking forward to seeing another team.

Wasn't in China, Jim. Pretty sure it was Tokyo.

As for playing the A's, yeah, bit sick of it now. But Chone finally looks like capable of hitting, and it looks like the Montero trade has gone our way. About time we had a good trade.

What, you weren't thrilled with Heathcliff Slocumb from the Red Sox for Jason Varitek and Derek Lowe? Eric Bedard for George Sherrill and Adam Jones?

  13. #73
Wasn't around for the Slocumb one; read up on it. Boggles the mind. Trading away Carlos Guillen for Ramon Santiago was the most ridiculous one when I lived in SEA. What a great one that was.

Tino Martinez too. And David Ortiz. Derek Lowe. Jason Varitek. Asdrubal Cabrera. Shin-Soo Choo. Adam Jones. Omar Vizquel. All could have been stars for the Ms; all were traded for junk.

Passing on Tim Lincecum. The bust that was Jeff Clement. Jose Vidro. Carl Everett. Jeff Weaver. Miguel Batista. Eduardo Perez. Jeff Cirillo. Horacio Ramires (we gave up RAFAEL SORIANO for him, WTF?!) 48 million to Carlos Silva. The list is endless.

Bill Bavasi was the worst thing that ever happened to the Mariners.

Stupid Cards beat the Reds in 10. I'm not one to complain, but there was a HORRIBLE call early in the game that took Stubbs out at 3rd. He would have scored on the next batter. Oh well. It happens. Plus, the Reds really stink right now. They cannot hit--which means fewer chances to put runs on the board.

Reds aren't the only ones who can't hit. The Astros are 1-13 with the bases loaded this season. Last night, they lost 1-0 to Washington. Wandy Rodriquez is 0-2 with a 1.96 ERA. The Astros can hit when the bases are empty, but not with runners in scoring position. 4-7 on the season, 1-4 on this road trip.
After years of fighting and a split, guess what, we are all IndyCar

October will always be a sad racing month for me. RIP Greg and Dan. You both were great and we miss you.

Astros starting pitchers have given up 2 earned runs in thier last 14 plus innings the past 2 games. So, obviously, we lost both those games. Of course a horrible balk call and a questionable ball 4 on a 3-2 count with the bases loaded didn't help.

    Saw Justin Verlander on PTI.
The other day he threw a 130 pitch complete game and 5 of the last 10 went 100 mph.
Said he could not throw that hard in the first inning if he tried.

That's a good mark of a starting pitcher.

Didn't like the outcome, but the fans in SF last night got to see a true pitching gem. Cain throws 9 innings of a 2-hit shutout, topped by Cliff Lee going 10 innings of shut out ball, only 102 pitches through 10! Then, of course, the Philly pen blows it with the help of our brain-dead manager leaving Ty Wiggington at 3B in extra innings and letting Thome hit against a lefty reliever.

Game was only at 1:50 through regulation, something like 2:34 total. Quite a throwback to the "old days"

Hey! My Phillies resemble that remark! It's embarrassing that a team with Halladay, Lee, Hamels (and Blanton/Worley as your 4 & 5 guys) can be dead last in the NL East.

My goodness, the umps are trying to mess the Astros over. Two horrible calls last night and now the Astro pitcher beats the runner to the bag easiely and the ump calls him safe.

Okay, so if the FOX regional coverage is NYY/BOS and CWS/SEA, obviously, Indianapolis gets...

    ...Yankees/Red Sox.

We're in White Sox territory. But we get to see a blowout, while the White Sox are no-hitting the Mariners in the seventh inning.

    FOX, you're dumb.

EDIT: Check that -- it's a perfect game through eight.

Wow, BIZZARE ending to the perfect game.

With one out left, and a 3-2 count on the final batter, the payoff pitch was way out of the strike zone, and it appeared that the batter checked his swing in plenty of time -- but the ump called it a swing.

So, the pitch was so bad, the catcher missed it! But instead of running to first on the wild pitch, the batter argued with the umpire! It really looked like he would have made it to first and broken up the perfect game.

Good move by FOX to send the country out to Seattle to see the end of the perfect game. That doesn't make up for giving Indy the wrong game though.

On the bright side, the Yankees were down 9-0 to the Red Sox -- only to put up 1, 7, and 7 runs in consecutive innings and take a 15-9 lead.

Can't blame the ump. Modern day sports media would have crucified the ump had he cost the kid a perfect game by calling it a ball.
