The power numbers were certainly better last year, but back then he was feasting on the Pirates, Padres, Dodgers, Nats, Reds (), Astros, and Marlins -- all of whom were below .500 for the whole season.

...pitiful crowd. I realize it's an early season game on a Tuesday night, but c'mon...Turner Field is empty. Braves are off to a great start, Phils are the 5-time defending NL East Champs. What the heck are the fans waiting for?
ATL is mid-pack in average attendance, but they have had a crowd as small as 16k for Monday game against the Mets.
Atlanta has always been a horrible sports town when measured by attendance.

Astros beat the Mets for the second straight night. Our first series win sinc ethe opening series of the season.
One of those nights... Phils get Halladay 4 runs and knock out the Braves starter after 3-2/3, stretch it to 6-0 and then Halladay...the best pitcher in the majors (IMO) gives up 6 in the bottom of the 5th. Braves get 2 more in the 6th...and then the Phils (who can't score runs) get 3 in the 7th to retake the lead 9-8. That's like a weeks worth of runs for the Phils and a month worth of runs allowed for Doc. Crazy game sometimes.
...and it got crazier. Ruiz with 7 RBI's for the game gives Philly a 12-8 lead...which the pen gacks up and the Braves take a 13-12 lead in the 8th.
Phils manufacture a run in the 9th to tie it 13-13. Should have gone for the 2-pt conversion for the win.

Jered Weaver of the Angels has no-hit the Twins through 7 innings.
The problem is that the strike zone is comically large. At least it was during the MLB Network live look-in in the seventh. If you want to call up Gameday, look at the called strikes against Alexi Casillas.
Sorry, the stike zone wasn't comically large in the seventh or ever. I watched the entire game. To the contrary, Weaver arguably got cheated on a couple pitches in the eighth and ninth.
BTW, I thought it was quite excellent seeing the cameras catch his dad drinking a stadium beer in bottom of the ninth - which happened, no lie.
Great for Weaver, overdue.
Go look at Gameday. It verifies exactly what I saw.
The guys on MLBN were saying the same thing during the live look-in, even if they didn't agree about every pitch. The strike zone dominated the discussion.
What I saw of the ninth wasn't much better.
I had no dog in the fight whatsoever, so I had no reason to see it any different from what it was.

Every pitch is graded using the same system, so the MLB puts trust in it. It might not be perfect, but it has no bias (not to be confused with favoritism, which I'm not addressing).
Gameday verified everything I saw though. I didn't need to see it to know what really happened, but it's there if anybody else wants to look.
BTW, Pitch F/X is accurate to better than 1 mph and 1/2 inch.

The zone was completely unremarkable. I hadn't thought about it whatsoever other than Weaver getting arguably screwed on a couple calls late, but whatever. The game was a blowout but I stuck with it since the no-no was in play, glad I did.
I will say this, which was interesting. I was watching the Fox West broadcast and the announcers never mentioned at least to my hearing that Weaver had a no hitter in progress. Not once. That's one of those baseball things that make the sport great, but that was a first for me with the announcers avoiding he jinx.
Anyway, cool to see a no hitter, and Jared's wife is quite hot.

Mariano Rivera tore his ACL tonight and is out for the season. His career may be over.
Same umpire (Welke) who likely cost the Reds a game last week against the Giants. P Sean Marshall had a clear strike three called a ball in the ninth, straight down the middle against batter Pagan, and everybody knew it. One or two pitches later, Pagan deposited the game-winning three-run homer in the bleachers. Welke was fooled because the catcher set up high out of the strike zone, but he had to move the glove to catch the ball in the middle of the strike zone. Welke's got issues lately.
I love Hairston's reaction in your video though. He handled it with a lot of class and let the coaches do the arguing. A lot of players would have lost it there.
I went to college with Jerry/Scott Hairston's younger sister, and I talked with them briefly once at World Baseball Classic tuneup a few years ago. They're a classy family.
As much as I despise the Yankees, this is just a terrible way for a career to end for a classy, outstanding player. He threw basically one pitch, everyone knew it was coming, and they still couldn't hit it year after year. Get well Mo.
In other news. The battle for Washington goes down this weekend with the surprising Nationals trying to "take back the park" against the Phillies. So many Phils fans have been making the trip that they had begun calling it Citizens Bank Ballpark South.
National management tried to restrict sales to Phillies fans and pump up the Nats fans into actually showing up for the games. We'll see how well it worked starting tonight. Their No. 1 (Strasburg) against our No. 6 (Kendrick, filling in for Cliff Lee). Kendrick's average fastball is the same speed as Strasburg's average change-up...
Sad, sad day for this Yankees fan.

And Dempster was give a loss on his birthday by Carlos Marmol. He blew a 3-0 lead in the 9th. BTW, Marmol is no longer the Cub closer! WHAT TOOK SO LONG!!!!
The Cubs did beat the Dodgers 5-4 today.

Ugh...Flyers season just ended and the Phils lost a second in two nights to the METS. Three games under .500 and looking up at the entire division. This may be a very looong season for Philly fans.
