8th Grader Picks Up Scholarship Offer From IU

Eron Gordon gets a full ride offer from Tom Crean.

Eron is Eric's little brother. He played with a select group of freshmen in a tournament this weekend and was arguably the best player despite his age. My son played against him at Municipal Gardens 5(?) years ago. The Gordons are a first class family. The father coached the kids and obviously runs a tight ship judging by the (exemplary) behavior of his kids. I hope he chooses IU.

And for the haters who can't resist hating...nothing is binding until they sign the LOI which I believe can't happen for three more years.

Not hating, but it just blows my mind when a kid who hasn't played a single high school game yet gets an offer from a major D1 program.

We've all seen 8th graders who get passed up in high school, but I don't think there's a lot of mystery with this one.

What if he turns out like his brother as a "one and done." IU doesn't take those types, only Kentucky, right?

His brother is evidence that IU has had at least one "one and done". Heck, Duke has had one each of the last two years.

But only one "school" seems to be making a living off of them. I wonder how this semester's class attendance has been at that school...

Yeah...not sure where the hating comes in, but I just wish schools would let these kids grow some pubes before showing interest.

How many full-ride scholarships have they offered the kids with the best grades in his class?

Cody Zeller was his class's valedictorian.

Those kids don't get offers for another couple years... usually after 10th grade they start flowing in.

Sports is news. There is no section in the newspaper that highlights scholarship. The fact is more kids get academic scholarships than sports scholarships. It just isn't news.

Michigan State's coach, Tom Izzo has been personally following a 10th grade point guard in Minnesota for some time and it was reported in the newspaper that he had been in the Twin Cities a couple of times to watch the kid play. That was just the most prominent coach coming a long way to watch and during the busy basketball season at that. That has to be serious and intense recruiting. The kid already has several offers. They must be picking up on these kids in summer workshops while they are still in junior high.

It should be. That's part of the problem.

Academics are more valuable to society as a whole and therefore more important than sports. No money should be spent on school athletics when we are so far behind the curve academically. It's foolish.

You know damned well that education has little if anything to do with it. So I ask again: How many full-ride scholarships have they offered the kids with the best grades in their 8th grade class?

It's no wonder our educational system is so screwed up and we're losing our competitive edge. ACTUAL EDUCATION takes a backseat to supposed athletic ability....pathetic.

Well, when students sell 50,000 season tickets to see them calculate Pi then it might even out. Until then don't fool yourself...students get scholarships all the time. And the truly gifted 8th grade students don't have to wait 4 years to enroll.

It's almost like it was a waiting game to see how long coaches could hold out on an offer to the kid.
