Seems it is not just a repaving of the track but a remaking it by raising the panking progressively to 20 degrees - "Another one bites the dust."
Also reported from the weekend that the S.A.F.E.R. at Bristol is down.

What happened to the old days of just sloppin' on a little "bear grease" and see what happens? None of em knew how to set it up for the race.......but they were also day races when the sun was out and the tough guys sweated and the track got hot, slick, greasy and the drivers bubbled to the top and the pudknockers dropped by the wayside. I miss racin'.

How long til they bank Martinsville & Darlington?
Apparently France has never heard the saying "if its not broke, dont fix it". The ISC just insists on ruining race tracks and its sad to see.
I dont ever wanta hear no more nonsense from Waltrip, McReynolds or Petty talking about how tough Nascar tracks are becuase thats an absolute joke now. All of their tracks are being transformed into banked cookie cutters if they arent one already. Martinsville & Darlington appear to be only real tracks they have left unless im leaving 1 or 2 out.
Every empire falls and I just think at some point the fans will get tired of this trend and the racing really is not any good on these cookie cutter tracks. Sure Nascar throwing out the sport side of it and making it all entertainment for the fans and having mostly all Americans will keep them high in the game for a long time but at some point that will run out of juice as will Nascar. And no im not implying that Nascar will go away because thats ridiculous, but I am saying Nascar's high popularity will fall at some point.
My words may not be what you want to hear.....but what you need to hear. TF CHALLENGE: CONVINCE 1 NEW PERSON TO WATCH INDY NEXT SUNDAY
Darlington is already banked to some extent, but is still a driver's track. Your main point is valid in that NASCAR is neutering the tracks pretty much everywhere. The worst example IMHO is Homestead. It went from an interesting layout (flat quad-oval) to a dull high-banked oval.
I think Darlington will always be a technical track because there is no good set up with one end of the track tighter. And I dont know how they could make the track wider now. It is what it is.
And I think they could add a few degreees of banking to Martinsville without needing to blow the whole place up but it they wanted to go nuts with banking there they would lose alot of lower sections of Grandstands I think

Nope not even with a 10 foot pole
Which is why I loved the fall race on the old Richmond half mile. 400 laps, by the time 300 had been run it was hot as hell and the track was super slick except for half the bottom groove. The guys who could drive dirt could run a second groove, the guys who couldn't hugged the bottom. One year I saw Jaws and Ironhead run the last 50 laps side by side, DW on the bottom and Dale on the outside with the ass end hangin' out and Dale keeping his foot in it. They don't race like that anymore!
Speaking of Martinsville, who besides me remembers why they went to concrete in the turns?
As for "rebanking it", if you can't drive Martinsville and want it altered so you can, change your business card description to something other than "Race Car Driver", maybe try "Crybaby" or "Pussy".

Personally I think they should just bulldoze the place over and never go back, but there is a precedence for what they're doing. Darlington was changed several times, once in the 50's and once in the 60's. Both Bristol and Rockingham were originally much flatter then they are now.
I'll see YOU at the races!
Nothing wrong with Martinsville that couldn't be fixed by a 32-car starting field. Enduro racing is for county fairs.

Martinsville is fine the way it is, leave it alone.
The only thing that may have been "wrong" with Martinsville was the fact that it had backstretch pits up to a point. And the only reason that was a flop was because of changes in the pit rules in the early 90s that made pitting on the backstretch a huge disadvantage. They spent the money to build one long pit road and fix it...then NASCAR figured out a simple way to fix the problem (what they do at Bristol now...require all cars to traverse both pit lanes under caution)
Darn it all, don't touch that place.

I watch more NASCAR than any other form of motorsports (got that in before someone accuses me of bashing, though it's happened before and probably will again), but these tracks suck for racing, period. I watch more NASCAR because there's way more of it on, doesn't mean I like all of it. Give me the two road courses and the short tracks and dump the cookie cutters and you make me a much bigger fan. Bigger than IndyCar, no, but a bigger fan. I'll tell, back in the
80's and early 90's I attended way more NASCAR in person, not anymore. Gave up going to Daytona a decade ago, while I might go again, I don't plan vacations around it. Now it's St. Pete instead.
Didn't duck fast enough, Mr. Dog.
The France's are big time Republicans.
And my fellow Hoosier 50 miles northeast has it correct. There is plenty of decent stock car racing around, be it pavement or dirt. NASCAR, like country music, taken its base for granted--with predictable results.

Wanna know what's wrong with NASCAR? They've gone from Junior Johnson to Jimmie Johnson.
Wanna know what's wrong with IndyCar? It's gone from dirt ovals to street races.
