It was so awesome seeing this on the track last year:

wasp - who wouldn't want to drive a 100 year old car that likely less than 20 people have ever driven?
an early miller - likely that gold 28 in the museaum
laziers 95 reynard - one of my all-time fav cars.
penske pushrod mercedes
looks like most are like me and not saying aries 239 car because it would scare the crap out of us.
My three picks:
1. 1963 #98 Ol Calhoun (Parnelli Jones' winning car)
2. 1971 McLaren M16
3. 1967 STP Turbine
Leaking oil or not...I'd still have to go with the Wasp!
Gary B had red front wings and since he lead most of that day, that might be what you were remembering.
On a side note, Gary B's car has been restored to a replica of Donohue's car for the Penske Museum. The car in this photo, however, is Donohue's real winning car and is owned by IMS.
1994 Penske Mercedes-Imagine the power
1982 Gould Charge or Norton Spirti
1981 Interscope Panasonic
1987 STP March
1967 Turbine
1954 Fuel Injection Special
1940 Boyle Maserati

ANY Wildcat-DGS,but especially the #46 Armstrong Mould car-does anyone know the whereabouts of it today?
1936 Ring-Free Miller-Louis Meyer's third winner.
1925 Pete DePaolo "Banana Wagon" Duesenberg
Well, I am named after Troy Ruttman if that gives you a hint!
I was thinking the 60's and that amazing motor, but a flathead? Just for the experience I would gladly add that to the list......as well as the Miller V-12, was it? There's nothing like excess, especially in the world of cylinders.
EDIT----so I had to go and look to see where the flathead Ford fit in timewise.......I found this pic on a show site....

Now yes the Ford motored vehicle is nice but which car exactly is that #8? I may have another to add to the list. That is one lug of a machine.

But when a long train of abuses and usurpations, pursuing invariably the same Object evinces a design to reduce them under absolute Despotism, it is their right, it is their duty, to throw off such Government, and to provide new Guards for their future security
1966 Novi Stp
1967 Stp turbine
1995-96 Lola 95 Menard V6
Any and all of them from every era I could. There are so many. I need 33 Me's so I can hold my own vintage race!!!
1. Silent Sam the 1967 turbine.
2. Herk's Tropicana Novi
3. A.J.'s 1964 winning Watson.
4. Clark's 1965 Lotus Ford
5. J.R.'s 1974 McLaren
6. Al's 1979 Chaparral
7. Danny's 1981 Interscope Batmobile
Each of these cars are part of my first hand experiences at IMS. Each of these cars posses unique character. Dang, I'd be happy just to sit in the cockpit of any of these machines!
God speed!
.....'Neshaminy, Don't worry, as soon as I saw that you mentioned Ford V8, I knew exactly which one you meant. The DOHC.
MichaelP! Thank you, for again sharing your collection of pictures. Your 2011 Indianapolis 500 Galleries were too good to be true. 'Amazing candids you captured of all the former winners and alumni 500 drivers.
note: 'Regarding Mark's '72 winning car, I actually preferred the looks of the '71 Sunoco McLaren. Albeit, they're both extremely gorgeous cars. And the more we have to look at the "generic, cookie-cutters" of today, the more beautiful those cars of yesteryear become.
...'Never will get tired of viewing and listening to the sound of that Indy Ford V8.

I didn't see anyone pick my choice; Calhoun!
"We are all speeding toward our deaths at 60 minutes an hour." Sid Collins on Race Day, 1964
Clark's winning Lotus, followed by Scott Brayton's pole winner from 1995. That car was pretty.
We drive 800 miles every year to see them go 500 miles. And we're glad to do it.
Wilbur Shaw's Boyle Maserati. A beautiful car.
Maybe it WAS the 71 Sunoco McLaren I was thing of and not the 72? That's why I questioned the yellow front wings. Anyone have a pic of the 71 version?
Very cool, thanks.
The Wasp
Mr. DePaulo's winning Duesy
Billy Arnold's Miller
Wilbur Shaw big white Shaw
Mauri Rose's Blue Crown Spl.
Calhoun as it was configured in 1963
Parnelli's Swooshmobile
and Rutherford's Chapparal...
Now by get to drive we are talking about driving around the Speedway... Right?
"Ride The Barrel & Get Pitted... So Pitted."
Frank Lockhart's 16-cylinder Samson
Russ Snowberger's FWD Studebaker
The Adams-Sparks (last 6-cylinder to win the race, prior to this year)
The Don Lee Mercedes
The Salih laydown roadster
Granatelli's "Silent Sam" turbine
The Antares, just to see if it drove better than it looked
The original Swift
The Lola-Greenfield
The original Riley & Scott Mark IV, with an Ed Pink Infiniti
I'm thinking we're just getting a list of "favorite cars".
The question was which would you like to "drive".
I interpreted that to mean, "pilot at its optimum speed".
I bet most of you oldpharts would be lifting long before T1.![]()
