wasp - who wouldn't want to drive a 100 year old car that likely less than 20 people have ever driven?

an early miller - likely that gold 28 in the museaum
laziers 95 reynard - one of my all-time fav cars.
    penske pushrod mercedes

looks like most are like me and not saying aries 239 car because it would scare the crap out of us.

Gary B had red front wings and since he lead most of that day, that might be what you were remembering.

On a side note, Gary B's car has been restored to a replica of Donohue's car for the Penske Museum. The car in this photo, however, is Donohue's real winning car and is owned by IMS.

I was thinking the 60's and that amazing motor, but a flathead? Just for the experience I would gladly add that to the list......as well as the Miller V-12, was it? There's nothing like excess, especially in the world of cylinders.

EDIT----so I had to go and look to see where the flathead Ford fit in timewise.......I found this pic on a show site....

Now yes the Ford motored vehicle is nice but which car exactly is that #8? I may have another to add to the list. That is one lug of a machine.

But when a long train of abuses and usurpations, pursuing invariably the same Object evinces a design to reduce them under absolute Despotism, it is their right, it is their duty, to throw off such Government, and to provide new Guards for their future security

.....'Neshaminy, Don't worry, as soon as I saw that you mentioned Ford V8, I knew exactly which one you meant. The DOHC.

MichaelP! Thank you, for again sharing your collection of pictures. Your 2011 Indianapolis 500 Galleries were too good to be true. 'Amazing candids you captured of all the former winners and alumni 500 drivers.

note: 'Regarding Mark's '72 winning car, I actually preferred the looks of the '71 Sunoco McLaren. Albeit, they're both extremely gorgeous cars. And the more we have to look at the "generic, cookie-cutters" of today, the more beautiful those cars of yesteryear become.

...'Never will get tired of viewing and listening to the sound of that Indy Ford V8.

Clark's winning Lotus, followed by Scott Brayton's pole winner from 1995. That car was pretty.

Now that is a work of art......and in the days before an annoying someone would have installed a certain brand tennis ball for a small fee in the stacks and ruined the entire mood. So there's a lot of good in that pic

Maybe it WAS the 71 Sunoco McLaren I was thing of and not the 72? That's why I questioned the yellow front wings. Anyone have a pic of the 71 version?

    Absolutely

At my age I don't drive as fast, but looking good is still important.

I'm thinking we're just getting a list of "favorite cars".

The question was which would you like to "drive".

I interpreted that to mean, "pilot at its optimum speed".

I bet most of you oldpharts would be lifting long before T1.
