But as a Bears fan I'm not so happy with the Vikings picking up some more picks and still being able to get the guy they want.
The Vikers suckered the worst front office in the NFL into handing them 3 free picks so that both teams could draft the same player they would have drafted anyway.

Could be. But they didn't want to take the chance of Tampa Bay moving up to take their guy Richardson.

Unfortunately for the Browns, they didn't have the benefit of your 20-20 hindsight.

They released John Beck. Drafting a second QB makes no sense, a luxury they can't afford.

Colts finally took a defensive player and then followed it up by taking a running back. Jeez...

Would someone please explain to every analyst on TV that 'Super Bowl' is 3 syllables. It is pronounced SOO per Bowl, not SOOP Bowl.

His 4.31 short shuttle and 7.16 3-cone drill times were middle of the pack - still decent considering his size-, but his 36" vert and 10'2 broad jump were both very near the top of the group. This indicates that he does possess a good amount of lower body explosiveness, something that people questioned a bit as he does look a little top heavy. Mostly in his absurdly gigantic biceps.
Guess I'm not the first to ask...but it could just be that his arms are so freaking huge that anything looks small by comparison.

The interesting part was trying to figure out how far the Vikings were willing to trade down to get picks and if they were willing to risk losing the guy the wanted to get picks. Still don't know that. Only thing clear was anybody trading up to 3 probably wanted Richardson so if the Browns wanted him, they had to play the Vikes' game.

I have a new favorite player.

    Tim Fugger

He's a big Fugger. Handsome Fugger too.

    I'm so getting a jersey.

Let's be serious. The Vikings wanted Kalil. They desperately needed a quality left tackle more than anything else. They would not have traded down any further than what it would take to get him. The Vikings simply bluffed the Browns with their talk of considering Blackmon and Claiborne which gave them more trade down moves. It worked because the Vikings also needed a corner back and a quality wide receiver almost as much as the left tackle.

The Vikes got who they wanted at #3 and a couple extra picks to go along with it.

    That's the definition of winning.

Study buddy for Griffin. It will hasten Griffin's development.

FWIW, Matt Flynn came into the league as study buddy (for Brian Brohm).

    Is it?

Can you make who you draft part of a trade? In other words, can the Vikings make a trade with a contractual agreement that the Browns won't select Kalil?

Joe Thomas is all the assurance they should have needed. I don't know the answer to your question, though.

In catching up with the draft, or at least what the Bears did...I was kinda left wanting more out of Emery. I guess I just expected -something- to be done about the OL either through free agency or draft. And really, they have not done anything in either place. And, I do not understand that. I mean, I like that they finally got some wide receivers with size. I can see the argument for a better DE to hopefully get production opposite Peppers. The two picks that kinda bugged me though...another 3rd round safety, and an undersized TE in the 4th. I guess we will see what Tice does, but I would have thought at one of those two picks some OL could have been found to work depth if nothing else. Although, I guess at that point it would not have mattered a whole lot. Their biggest weakness on the OL is Webb at LT, and you will be hard pressed to find a starting caliber LT in the 3rd or 4th round...although Webb is a 7th round pick.

    That could be quite unfortunate.

Turbin, the guy with the big arms, ran a 4.50 40 at the combine, has run 4.44 elsewhere; pretty fast for a kid his size. He has a lot of reasons to make it. He doesn't talk about his mom, she has drug issues and disappeared. The rest of his family:

....while Turbin's place among this year's rookie class remains to be seen, it is safe to immediately declare him one of the easiest players to pull for in the 2012 draft. His older sister Trina, who had multiple sclerosis, died when Turbin was a young child. By the time he was in third grade, Turbin helped care for his sister Tiffany, who has cerebral palsy, when his dad was at work.

“I started taking care of her on my own when I was about eight years old,” Turbin said on a conference call. “She's in a wheelchair, the only thing she can move is her head. My role was to feed her when it was time to feed her and give her water and change her diapers and put her to sleep and pretty much do everything that you would do with a newborn baby. ... That was my role whenever my dad was gone at work.”

In February, Turbin's older brother, who battled with drug addiction, who Turbin hoped to be able to help after getting drafted, was shot and killed.

“It's motivated me a lot,” Turbin said of his family hardships. “Now I have an opportunity to be there for my family.”

Seattle drafted 10 guys yesterday, slowest was an OT at 4.85. By comparison, Andrew Luck had a 4.67.

I read in one article in the Chicago Tribune that all the guys that the Bears drafted ran 4.6 or better in the 40 this year. So, they definitely got some speed on the team.

Jim, I had never heard of Turbin until you mentioned him yesterday. I looked him up to read more about him and he truly is a guy I can pull for.

There might not be a less meaningful stat than an OL's 40 time.

Still, speed thrills. The way it's talked up I'm curious to see how my boy Nick Stoner fares in 3 years.

  28. #118
Well, for the Bears...5 of the 6 guys drafted are WR, TE, and DB, so they kinda need more speed. The 'slowest' guy was the first round DE who had the 4.6. I am willing to wait and see how it turns out with Tice as the Offensive Coordinator and if that really is enough to help the OL for the Bears with the return of Carmini and Williams from injury. At least they now have legit size at WR with Marshall (6'4") and the 2nd rounder Jeffery (6'3"). As I have seen many times before, coaches can teach a lot of stuff, but you cannot teach height.

Probably true ... but it can't hurt. The greatest Seattle Seahawk of all time was Walter Jones, a left tackle who weighed over 300 lbs and ran a 4.7. Fast? Yeah, he blocked his man backwards faster than Shaun Alexander could run:

Speed never hurts but a OL's time in the 10 yard dash is infinitely more important than his time in the 40.

By the way...that's a freaking awesome block in the video.
