For all those with their nickers in a bunch about drawing qualifying crowds....

Hold Pole Day on the Saturday before the race and bump on Sunday morning of race day.
All roads lead to Indy except for State Road 39 which goes to Martinsville.

According to the movie Back To The Future, weren't we supposed to be able to control the weather by now?

Seems like every other track does it easily.

Sure. What does it cost to get in on Qualifying days? $20 ? Add $40 to 500 ticket price and you have 400,000 at qualifying and no loss of income.

I've been coming to the 500 since 1955. The race is just as vibrant as ever, but times have changed. Time to come into the 21 century.

Nah. I like the general admission during quals. I get to take in different vantage points and sit in the best seats in the house that I would never afford on race day.

Lets save a lot of money for the owners. For all the races just draw a number for starting position.

I don't think IMS is losing money with qualifying being on a second weekend. First, you can have quite a few people there and the stands will look empty (lots of seats and lots of people moving around the in-field and not in a seat). Second, they sell suites/party rooms/etc for each of those days which I am sure are huge profit centers for IMS.

It wouldn't be the first time.

I'd like to see the grid inverted by league standings to that point. lowest points position first. If that doesn't fill the field, draw for the remaining spots.

I'm sure they get a few bucks from TV for wall to wall qualifying coverage also.
    Have a very blessed day!

I like the current weekend before format just fine. I also don't want to give up Carb Day.

...marijuana is a hell of a drug....

it certainly is, it causes irrational behavior in non-users.

seriously what would be a good crowd for quals? how many?

I would like the ability to squeeze more races in before Indy that this could provide, but I think this a horrible idea. Can you imagine the uproar, dude?
I am a fan of the IZOD IndyCar Series, Formula 1, and AMA Supercross in that respective order.

I nominate we skip qualifying altogether and have a pill draw for position like the late models on Saturday night.

Another dumb idea, but one some would love, maybe they could add more gimmicks to make it more entertaining.

In 2014 the horses at the Kentucky Derby will be required to turn left and right, and a chicane will be added to the backstretch as well as a water jump, to provide braking/passing zones. An entirely new group of trainers and jockeys will be added, making this the most diverse horserace in the world.

By 2018 they won't even be having horse races on tracks. They'll get promoters who get cities to lease them park space, then they will construct some multi turn courses around the softball fields, gourmet food trucks will circle the park with beer vendors on bicycles. The will have concerts after the races and shovel up what's left in the temporary stalls to sell as fertilizer. It won't matter if anybody even shows up because the promoter will get a cut of the OTB income and they'll get some guy from steeplechase to run the show.

realistically the 40,000 or so that have been there the last few years for Pole Day is a pretty good crowd; but to some on here anything less than 200,000 is a tragedy.
