Hummingbirds are Back Home Again in Indiana

Today I decided to go ahead and put a couple of feeders out so there would be something out when they arrived. About 10 minutes after I put the feeders out I looked up and there was Lynyrd. (We call the males with the red necks Lynyrd )

It made me very happy. So if you feed the hummingbirds, get those feeders out.

Coincidence? I sighted my first hummer of 2012 at 6:45 this evening. A wonderful and welcome sight...I've had feeders up for three weeks thinking the hummers might be back earlier this year, but none until today.

I gave a Hummer the bird yesterday after I was cut off.

We have bear problems so we don't put out feeders. We have window boxes with red flowers that are almost as entertaining. Sometimes I wake up and look out the window to a couple of them looking back.

We put nothing out. It's the censored woods. The birds/deer/wolves/bears and all other things natural can feed themselves. Plus, I guess I don't really mind admitting it, after all those years in California and Florida, I HATE the "work" involved with switching seasons. This is not a rant.

    Now about those window "boxes"..........

We put up multiple tube feeders for the regular birds.
A house feeder for the larger ones.
A goldfinch feeder, the kind where they have to hang upside down to get to the thistle.
Then there are 3 hummingbird feeders.
    Then there are the plants.
    Bird bath too.

Makes for a pretty active backyard. We also get visited by hawks looking to feast on the song birds hanging out. We've been sitting on the deck and had territorial hummingbirds doing circles around us, including flying under the chairs we're sitting in.

We get excited when the first hummingbirds show up in the Spring and the Juncos in the Fall.

I noticed that Mom had three new Hummingbird feeders sitting in the garage... I guess that's what I'll be doing today. Mom lives between 10th and Rockville East of Girl's School and "Believe it or Not" this morning I woke up and saw three deer in her front yard.

We feed birds in the winter and enjoy putting out corn for the squirrels. It's entertainment. Once the snow melts they all get put away.

The first year we fed, I didn't put the feeders away in time. I was sitting in my chair with morning coffee and watched mr. black bear bend our 1/2 inch iron shepherd hook right into a u shape and kill the feeder...about 5 feet away from the window I was looking out.

Yeah, with apologies to Snow61, we have enough critters. Since Maggie the Pooch died last year, we have extra critters. Little critters attract big critters. Eagles fly over most every day and we get a few hawks and I'd guess all other bird variants known to habituate the area. Loons hang out where the dock's gonna go. If hummingbirds (and birds in general) want to buzz around, fine. I enjoy early mornings but don't think a house can be insulated enough to block the noise from whatever it is that starts chirping at whatever the equivalent sunrise is of civil twilite (it sure ain't civil). We don't need the bears. I've seen 'em attack plants on the deck when the "usual and proper amount" of food wasn't there when they so decided.

With Grand-babies and Grand-dogs on the property at times, the less carnivorous critters around the better.

Blackbird/crow/ravens start their cackle at 5:00 AM. With no AC, we tend to have open windows during warm weather. One summer we had a relaxing season. We had one of our Daughter's boyfriend come and take 'em out with his .22.

I can certainly understand not wanting to attract bears to your yard and I hate providing a smorgasbord for the hawks. I know, the circle of life.

There are downsides to feeding the birds. When I was in 6th grade we lived in Elkhart, IN just a couple of blocks from the St. Joe river. Mom put a bird feeder in the back yard so she could watch the birds while doing the dishes. Unfortunately, the ducks found out about the feeder. So every morning about 5am...QUACK, QUACK, QUACK...here came the ducks waddling across the street, around the corner of the house, under the bedroom windows...QUACK, QUACK, QUACK. Mom would be out running around the yard in her nightgown banging pots & pan lids together trying to chase the ducks away. It was a pretty funny sight.
