Thread: You Always Knew Who Sponsored The Car By The Paint Scheme

Ponder this. There are several, or at least historically there have been, sponsors or paint schemes that have changed little over the years. When you see the Penske Marlboro cars, who's the first driver that comes to your mind? Or when you see a late 90's early 2000's Target car, which driver do you think of? Or Kool?
Penske: Fittipaldi (because he had the longest Marlboro ties...) then Unser Jr & Tracy... I associate Rick Mears with Pennzoil & Gould more than Marlboro.

Target Ganassi: My memories are a bit twisted... Eddie Cheever in the original "bullseye" Target livery & then Bryan Herta & Jimmy Vaser in their 1995 Target Reynards... I liked the black on the side pods with the yellow lightning bolts & red bodies. The Zanardi/JPM/Vasser era cars were ketchup & the lightning bolt was mustard slashes!

I love that Target livery. Unfortunately, The furthest back memory I have of Target is Montoya which started the turn to rather bland Target liveries if you ask me.

Agree... you caught me editing. I added some additional commentary on that era of Target car.

Ahhhh!!! My brain can barley contain all this nostalgia. Not going to lie I REALLY miss seeing Kool, Marlboro, and Player's on the side pods of an open wheel car.

I always wished the Pac West Hollywood cars had more of a design theme to their livery.

The beer and tobacco liveries always seemed to bring instant recognizability, probably because they were so consistent over multiple forms of racing. The Penske Marlboro cars had the same design as the McLarens, Rahal's MGD car looked just like Rusty Wallace's Cup ride, all the Bud cars followed similar patterns.

Of course, the real test is when sponsors end up on another team's cars, in this case it's still recognizable, even with the wrong sponsor! (See, also, the reverse: http://8w.forix.com/pc23-500i/br-ind94.jpg)

I am surprised no one has mentioned the Castrol AAR Eagles yet.

Awesome illustration of the Eagle face on the front of the car... but then AAR just kept it all white to keep it simple for a variety of associate sponsors. Some TF folks have nominated Robby Gordon's colorful MENARDS Eagle in other livery related posts. I like it but some of the eagles details got lost on the blue section of RG's Eagle.

As a Luyendyk fan, my thoughts of Target go waaaaay back to when Arie and Cheever were running the Target/Scotch cars:

I don't think I'd ever seen a picture of Rahal in one of the Penskes! Thanks for posting that.

Yes but the one that was more identifiable with the brand was for 2 years when he ran the actual colors of Miller High Life (I beleive '88 and '89). That being the frosty gold and white colors

Somewhere I have some photos of one of the Reynards Penske acquired from Bobby Rahal in '95 in a desperate attempt to make the race. The car is still painted in the Duracell black and gold, with a "Marlboro" sticker hastily slapped on the side.

Growing up in the 1990's I always looked forward to seeing/hearing those Menard V6 storm around the track. Also, What awesome color/driver/sponsor combos the team would come up with for the month of May.

For me, the Day Glo Orange of the STP March of Guerrero in 1987
The best is the 1970 and 1971 Johnny Lightning Special. The paint scheme was based on the logo.

There were a lot of cars that had white tubs & black (or dark colored) side pods. I recognized this car for the Texaco Star, large Kmart logos, & fully covered in associate sponsorship...+ the fact Mario or Michael always had them up front or on pole. The livery though was not very iconic.
