IU - Kentucky rivalry is over

IU wants to play on campuses while UK wants to play at neutral sites.

Bottom line: The series rivalry is over for now.

IU/Kentucky was played on neutral sites for years, what's the harm in going back to that? Downtown Indy was awesome for those games.

I hate to say this, but is Crean that worried about leaving Assembly Hall? Knight had no problem playing @ a neutral site.

IU/UK would be awesome if it were played on a St. Pete airport strip, but its at its best on campus in front of the students in Bloomington and Lexington.

If UK doesn't feel comfortable in Assembly Hall, that's their tough luck. They're college games and should be played on campus. Period.

    Come on...you surely aren't serious.

Crean wants the campus experience. IU has the #1 student section in the country.

Calipari wants neutral sites. Why? I don't know or care. Good Lord, man, if I can be neutral in this surely you can. Afterall, my alma mater is involved.

    What a concept.

Disagree. Students can still go to the games @ Indy and presumably Louisville, plus plenty more alumni and fans from both schools. Hotels, more bars, etc.

It is a shame that it had to end because of this though, it was a great rivarly. Why couldn't switch it up every 2 years?

Why not tear down campus stadiums and play every game at a neutral site?

    Let's start with Hinkle.

#1 student section in the country? Should that preface, "IMO"?

Then why did IU/Kentucky play at neutral sites from 1991 through 2005?

Can't tear down Hinkle it is preserved as a historical site. I just don't see how Kentucky/IU played on neutral sites for 15 years and act like it is travesty for Kentucky suggesting to do the same thing.

How many years did they play on campus?

Please show me where I said it was a travesty that UK wants to play on neutral sites.

    Thanks.

I think the problem is that there isn't a neutral site option in KY. Yum won't take them. UK is using the neutral site as an excuse to walk away. Frankly I wish IU would call their bluff and offer to have it at LOS or BLF every year, but I can understand why they don't.

What's Indiana States student section size?

IU and Kentucky @ neutral sites - Kentucky 12 wins, IU 3

IU and Kentucky @ campuses - Kentucky 4 wins, IU 2.

Why won't YUM take them? IU played @ Kentucky @ Freedom Hall, right?

Was there an uproar when they played @ neutral sites in the 90's in early 2000's?

Ok, travesty may have been a bit much, I guess the "uproar".

Why do you put quotes around "best"? I didn't say best -- that would be subjective. So who are you quoting?

I said the #1 student section, which they are. #1 by the only real way to measure it -- size. That's a fact.

So you are saying that IU & UK have only played 21 times?

I'm totally lost here. What is your point? What was the last line supposed to be saying?

Louisville has a tall enough task recruiting against UK and IU as is. If it happened in the past, maybe they just finally thought better of it.

Ok, fine. IU has the biggest student section in the country.

I wonder if IU will try to fill the Kentucky game with another big time game? Kansas/IU would be fun to watch.

Show me where I said there was an uproar over Cal wanting to play on neutral sites. The only uproar I've seen is because the series is ending.

Then you chime in with your 100% predictable position -- opposing IU.

I heard that KU was told "no thanks" because Crean didn't want UK & KU in the same pre-B1G season.

Pitino is on record as saying he wants to play IU. It would be funny if Crean agreed to play him on a neutral site.

Regardless, you can't replace a true rivalry game. I'm sure it will be another year or two and they will agree on something. Both schools know it is too good of a game to not schedule.

I doubt it happens until Calipari retires. He was wanting to dump the UK/Louisville matchup, as well.

It doesn't matter if it's IU vs. UK, UNC vs. Duke, etc. Big time matchups that are played on college campuses are good for the sport. The atmosphere at Assembly Hall last year was incredible, just as it would have been at Rupp Arena next year when IU played them. When games go to neutral sites, it becomes stale and takes away one of the biggest reasons why college basketball is so great: the pep band, the electric atmosphere, and the noise. When it's played in a 75,000 seat football stadium, it's just not the same.

What is Kentucky proposing as it's "neutral site" option?

I really don't care if it's on site, or at Indy/Lville, as long as they keep the game.

Neutral site traditions can work. The Texas/OU game (which I compare Kentucky/Indiana to in Bball, especially when UT-OU were in diff conferences) is special BECAUSE of the neutral site.

What a waste to see this rivalry go.

    Texas-Texas A&M....

    Mizzou-Kansas....

    Indiana-Kentucky....

all now gone because of petty BS.

Suggesting that Crean was worried about leaving Assembly Hall is nuts... Crean had no problem playing Kentucky on their own campus. It sucks for the student body on both campus to lose this as a home game every other year. Obviously the Kentucky Coach has realized that with Indiana back his one and dones would have to play a real contender every year in their first dozen games if this was to continue.

I see no reason to end this game if it financially makes more money to go to neutral sites. I always thought the 50/50 was cool. Do it at Freedom and Hinkle. Do it somewhere in Cincy. Whatever.

How can the AD's not step in and over-rule the coaches in this situation? That given, why is Kentucky afraid of home and homes?
