That would be pretty awesome if they got one of the Top Gear guys. They could do a whole special on the race.

Ya know, I wouldn't have any complaints about that.

Diners Drive Ins and Dives gets better ratings than Indy Car and so did Minute To Win It just so you know! So you might not want to be so critical of Guy.

Since the pace car is a Chevy don't use Clarkson because he'll call it rubbish. You would have to use Richard Hammond.

Lol he is the closet American on the show!

Edit: I second the motion for Tanner Foust!

I'd rather see what Tanner could do as one of the 33 instead of the pace car driver.

  12. #72
Ya, cause Tanner will sure bring in a bunch of free publicity! Every year its the same thing with you guys, the pace car driver isn't supposed to appeal to any of us, its supposed to be a publicity stunt which will get the race some free press/coverage.

I don't agree with that strategy but that is the reasoning behind the people that they pick.

If you think Tanner is so much better a pick explain how he will garner more free press than Guy will.

I don't think going sideways is the fastest way around Indy. I think AJIV already tried that and it didn't work.

I'm underwhelmed, I know he's a guy named Guy from the Food Network but I've never watched a second of any show he's on. What all those mutts they have on that new classic ABC daytime show, The Chew, were booked to bus tables so they couldn't drive?

I wouldn't be surprised to see Luck waive the green on a practice day.

I certainly wouldn't call Michael Symon or Mario Batali mutts. But that's not what this thread is about, is it?

It would be totally cool if he lit his hair on fire during the lap and the 500 Queen sitting in back grilled a hotdog over it!

His weekly intro and exit featuring the 67 Camaro might have made Chevy execs a fan of his. They don't want gearheads (although this guy is a car guy)...they already have some of that demographic...they want to get ordinary slapdicks who aren't already watching the 500 interested...might draw in a few fans I guess.

I'd prefer to see Giada in an off road series...with a steering wheel cam.

Guy is an absolute excellent choice in my book, a home run for sure.

First one they've hit in quite a while too...

Why on earth would you want it to be someone like Foust? The people who care about him are already watching. Guy brings in all sorts of people who may not otherwise tune in.

I know my girlfriend almost passed out when I told her yesterday that we will likely see Guy Fieri in person at the 500 this year. Hopefully he's in the parade!

Ya, so, hows that gonna get free publicity for the 500? Those guys don't even qualify as celebrities! Maybe you don't understand........US Weekly or Entertainment Tonight isn't gonna give two craps about either of those three guys. They are nobodies in the grand scheme of things.

How many food or celebrity magazines are out there? Guy has far more chance of being picked up in a story and maybe just maybe a picture of the 500 used in one of those stories than anybody from Top Gear has a chance of an article in the limited number of car magazines.

I think you would be floored to see how much free press Robin Roberts generated for the 500 and what that would have equated to in paid advertising. A little photo, a brief mention here, a short video spot there, an article, an interview. That is what this is all about. Tanner would get them nothing. Just do a google search alone on Robin Roberts Indy 500 and have a look at what has been generated. Indy didn't pay for any of that. That is millions in free coverage for simply sticking somebody in a car.

Simple question, who do you think will generate more free publicity, Guy or Tanner and which will have the further reach?

Guy by a million miles, and everything else you said was spot on.

I don't think people's personal wish list for pace car drivers has exposure generation (what would be most important to IMS - that makes the decision) in mind. And that's fine, people are welcome to have differing opinions.

Are we marketing this to potential fans or the entertainment crowd? If it's the former, the choice is Foust. If it's the latter, it's Fieri.

Of course, this is typical TrackForum. I support Fieri driving the pace car, but once I agree that Foust is an equally good choice it's all out war. Kinda sums up IndyCar's fanbase in a way.

  30. #90
Potential fans are people who wouldn't be exposed to car racing, not people who already know who Tanner Foust is. Why can't you understand that?

If you know who Foust is, you know what the Indy 500 is and if you're not a fan, you're at least paying attention on Memorial Day weekend to see who wins. Guy Fieri is completely outside of that and that's what you want to maybe generate some new fans.
