What's more amazing is he played "Goober" in three different shows--The Andy Griffith Show, Mayberry R.F.D. and Hee Haw. That bit with Gomer was the only time the two ever appeared on the original Andy Griffith Show. They reunited on an episode of Gomer Pyle, U.S.M.C., and for the reunion T.V. Movie with Andy, but that was it. Goober's role really didn't grow until Andy went color.
I once heard Andy Griffith say that when George first started to play Goober, he was having trouble visualizing the character. Andy said, "Just imagine a guy going to a ritzy restaurant for the first time and saying,' Wow! This is great salt!'."
George took it from there.

Always liked that episode of M*A*S*H that he did. Pretty damn funny.
Andy, Opie, Thelma Lou and Sam Jones the only ones left I think that were regulars in the cast. Too bad and very sad Mayberry is disappearing. RIP George "Goober" Lindsey.

A friend of mine was in Mt.Airy last month, he said as he was leaving the restaurant where he had lunch, Betty Lynn (Thelma Lou) came in and looks good for 83! She moved to Mt.Airy several years back and appears monthly to sign autographs at the Andy Griffith Museum.
IMHO, The Andy Griffith Show was the strongest ensemble cast ever for a sit-com, even the minor characters you didn't see in every episode were outstanding.So many funny moments, no matter how many times I watch them I still find something funny I missed...a look, background scenery, a line that I never really paid attention to.
My favorite show, ever.

And the Dick Van Dyke Show is right up there for me, as well.
George also did a few voices for several Disney movies. Lafayette the dog in The Aristocats comes to mind.
It's hard to be cool when your dad is Goofy.
