Perhaps, but than nobody's written any books on Riccardo (that I've every seen or heard of). Patrese had four great wins and two gift wins, that's probably one reason many will consider Gilles better than him. And I was a huge Patrese fan. Very huge as I've met him, got his autograph and picture (somewhere in my basement).

But yeah, it's your opinion, you know your stuff and I respect that. Everyone doesn't have to agree, but they should respect that.

Every time I see the #'s 99 or 98, I think of Greg and Dan. Even if it's at a glance, with a different design and livery. I see Tags car and still think of Dan and that neon orange car coming from nowhere to win indy. It's even more special if that number is still with that same team. For example, one day I think I'll tell my kids how a guy named Dan Wheldon used be that driver when they see the BHA #98.

If you retire it, it's gone.
    Agreed 100% with this.

Funny that Villeneuve should be brought up. Far from thinking it should be retired, many an F1 fan has actually moaned in the past about F1's post-1996 numbering system and low car count combining to mean that the #27 is no longer used, not because it's "retired" but because with only 24 cars numbers only go up to #25 (excluding #13), and many would love to see the #27 on track again.

You'd often hear "there's Mansell/Alesi in the red Ferrari #27, made famous by the late great Gilles Villeneuve" or words to that effect on the commentary to races in that period. The fact that these two carried the number with distinction (plus Prost for one year, although winless, and Senna for a year but in a McLaren), did more to keep his memory alive than just retiring the number.

Although actually Gilles only carried #27 for a season and a bit, and ran more races with the #12, but I'm going off on a tangent now. Suppose there's parallels with Dan there, ending his career with the 77 but achieving most of what he did with the 26.

Put a fork in this idea. Retirement of numbers is done.
