These things will never get recognized provided those covering the series fail to shine a spotlight on them. There is complete and utter ineptness when it comes to coverage and it starts with the broadcast coverage and trickles all the way down from there.

There is so much good going on that nobody is talking about. It is why I am so FRUSTRATED with the TV coverage from both ABC and NBC. These guys set the tone. There is no imagination, no passion no understanding, no concern. The most exciting thing Marty and Scott could think of to cover the race was standing out on the point of Belle Isle for the intro of the coverage.

IndyCars PR department is weak. They need to learn to work better with the key players covering this series. Sending out the blanket press releases are useless. They need to be working with these guys as a team. Asking them what they need, working stories together, influencing the message that gets out there. Look how focused and dedicated the series is to Twitter. They are so out of touch with what needs to be done.

This series is very reminiscent of the early nineties right now to me. No, the cars aren't as fast, no the drivers aren't as big a stars, no the ratings are not as high, no the stands aren't as full, but you take what it is we all want and it is right there, bubbling, in a hot cauldron, ready to explode into something big with just the right few remaining ingredients.

It won't ever happen if the series and its partners don't start telling everybody. This stuff doesn't just happen on its own. We want racers! We've got one, Sato. He's the Japanese version of Gilles Villeneuve. Fearless, balls out, take no prisoners win at all costs! He went from hero to zero in the blink of an eye last weekend. He's a hot ticket to watch. He's driving for a series legend. Driving against the legends son. There is a hot bed of storylines and interesting points of discussion in there to bring to the attention of the viewers. Shine a spotlight on it. Get people talking about it. I don't even like Sato. But it doesn't change the fact that its an opportunity of many being missed.

The broadcast team is your front line sales force. They are failing miserably. They have been failing miserable for the last ten plus years!!!! When does somebody start doing something about this. They set the tone.

Your perspective is sorely needed here, paper.

thanx,, gonzo is correct,, was there really a need to bring up randy/the owner story 7 days after an incredible 500? the good stories were plentiful.. still are, how many casual veiwers had a single clue who and why an argument between the ceo and an owner was news? They tuned in for a race, whoa,, then that was a problem

GM and rog wanted a detroit race,, with what we saw at indy theres no doubt Michigan being overlooked was a huge bad choice,

and then theres my young freind hinch,, IF ever I saw where a guy should be allowed to restart in his back up. that was it,, taken out by a concrete mini meteor due to faulty track prep?

if abc does the next race I bet there will be a segment on gypsum mining and its applications to racing,, just what the casual fans seek,,,,,

Maybe IICS should hire the ABC tech geeks to evalauate the track suitability. Seems they probably know more than anybody at IICS.

    Decent post.

    But answer me this, Batman

Where has the money gone if lost? Many sanctioning organizations are set up to be non-profit entities. USAC used to be.

Was the IRL/Indy Car not set up this way, and if not, why not? If so, then one would think that the sanction fees we've heard would have been more than enough to pay expenses of the organization, unless the organization was so mismanaged................

Was the point fund the issue? Was management subsidizing the purses?

If it was set up as a for profit then where did the money go? Can anyone explain it? Jets, transporters, fancy equipment? Barnharts salary?

Sanction fees are ordinarily not based on ticket sales, sponsor dollars the tracks get, etc.........
It's usually a set fee per event and in some cases might be based on a percentage of the actual race purse. I have seen it where the sanction fee was included as part of the race purse.

Ie, if a promoter paid a purse of 1 million, and the fee was 10 percent, 100K went to the sanction fee and point fund, 900K went to the racers that day.

I'd sure like someone in the know to explain the past 15 years or so of business to us so we know why NOW the series is 'breaking even' instead of losing money.
It doesn't seem like it should have ever lost money in the first place.

dont know about indycar,, but it champcar it was an operating fee for many things, the problem was agreeing to less for some and others paying full, that became the only way some were on the schedule.
