"Any time that I can be out at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway, you're going to see a smile on my face." - Dan Wheldon
"It's crazy how the Indianapolis Motor Speedway can make you so emotional. I went from the highest of highs to the lowest of lows in less than 24 hours." - Alex Tagliani
If there was really 30,000 people there, then Gossage would go ahead and tell of IndyCar. Now we're talking about a second race that will draw less? Folks, you may want the attendance to be at 30,000, but it was a lot more than that. All the pictures that I've seen have been from the truck race, which is odd because last time I checked the truck series didn't use open wheel cars.
69,000 tickets were sold. That's what counts folks; and it sure as hell looks like there were enough fans in the stands. If you believe it was less, then there is no reason for the past five races to have even taken place.
That totally depends on the selling price of the tix. Freebies mailed to select patrons are given with the hopes that those fans will bring others who will purchase concessions. Group tix might be sold to a small/medium business for a big discount, again with the hopes of making the profit once the fans are inside the track. Ticket sales are not the final profit point - concession sales can easily make the difference in profitability.
Very few who paid anywhere near full price are going to miss the event, but if you are given a complimentary ticket or two from your boss or free with a lube job, the odds of going are greatly reduced.
69,000 tickets distributed is most likely the basis for the attendance numbers for the IICS race. (One TF member could tell us if that's true or not.)Then next year when selling signage at the track, TMS can say that 'attendance' was 69,000 and use that as a selling point.
Caveat Emptor.
I guarantee you Gossage doesn't feel this way. The price of admission, and I really doubt everyone in attendance paid full price, is only the starting point for the money they expect to extract from your wallet. If you sell 70k and only 30k show up, then you lost out 40k worth of food, drink, and merchandise.
Do attendance threads help attendance?
"The series may be hesitant to say it, but the day is here for everybody that loves IndyCar racing to link arms and help each other out. Anybody who doesn’t want to do that needs to find something else to do with their time.”
-- Eddie Gossage, President, Texas Motor Speedway, ICONIC Advisory Committee & TrackForum member
Gotta disagree, man. Saturday was the worst crowd we've had ever...by a mile. We were 3 sections over from where the PSL's ended in T1, and just strolled up 30 mins before the flag, with 25 people, in the upper level, and found row upon row of empties.
I'd sat 30k is on the high end. Wish it was better, but it was bad.
"Now, for some of you it doesn't matter. You were born rich and your going to stay rich. But here's my advice to the rest of you: Take dead aim on the rich boys. Get them in the crosshairs and take them down." -- Edward Blume
In case you were wondering, it does not appear as if those seats are radioactive or anything:
