    Anybody here had Maid-Rite?

So my neighbors are opening up a restaurant here in Arlington called "Maid-Rite Diner." I went to their pre-opening night just a moment ago and had a BBQ Maid-Rite, but I heard the full menu will have Terderloin. Now, I know a lot of my Indy friends have had it before but I've never been able to go to Indy. Is the taste comparable to what they serve in Indy; the pictures that I've seen on these boards look really good.

Never heard of Maid-Rite. But google is our friend.

So it seems to be the same thing that Roseanne Barr served up in her diner on her sitcom. ??

    It's an Iowa thing, right?

Yes and yes to Snow61 and doitagain...

At the time in the show that Roseanne bought the diner, she was married to Tom Arnold who's from Iowa...

They were also building a huge house in Ottumwa, Iowa...alas, they went the way of Tom and Katie...

Pretty much. My mom ordered a Texas BBQ Sandwich and said "this looks exactly what was on Roseanne." I couldn't get past the term "loose meat" so I went with the Nathan's hot dog which was quite tasty. The BBQ sandwich was mostly meat with a touch of BBQ. It kinda got the "yankee cookin'" look from my mom, but the bite I had was alright.

    The menu lists: The Tender-Loin Center-cut, tenderized pork, seasoned & hand-breaded $4.99
Sounds about right. We need pics!!!

    Menu: http://maid-rite.com/food/images/Mai...ryout_Menu.pdf

Looky at what else they serve it with:

Make it a basket and add 3.00
All baskets include a side and a fountain drink
Cheese Curds/Onion Rings/Sweet Potato Fries are an additional charge

We actually stopped at that diner on our way home from a Farm-Aid concert. Loose meat sandwich IIRC, was like a sloppy Joe without the sloppy. Just browned ground beef.

Ok, might be wrong here, but a loose meat ie Maid-Rite, has NO sauce. Just meat and spices correct? And mustard the standard condiment?

Indeed, the original and real Made Rites are in a little berg, Greenville Ohio, where half of the town is in Indiana and the other in Ohio. The very best sammy;s around. Heck, it was an institution when my Mom was a kid, and she would have been 90 this month.
I think they did try to franchise, but pulled out because there is only one original...( just read their bio) I mightbe wrong on the franchsie thing

    Great stuff with a beer!

beej, that's not quite true. Union City (where my father grew up) is divided by that state line, not Greenville which is about 10 miles east of the state line and entirely in Ohio. That was my first Maid Rite BTW.

There was a franchise from one of the Iowa Maid Rite chains that opened in Plymouth, IN a couple of years ago. Both my father, who grew up with the Greenville MR's, and I were totally disappointed, there weren't close the same. It didn't last 3 months.

I took the recipe and might make a half portion. Boiling the meat sounds...interesting.

There's a guy from Iowa who has a restaurant in Clearwater... Pete & Shorty's. You should avoid his Tenderloin Sammich but his Loose Meat sammich seems to be okay. But I've never had one anywhere else.

Maid-Rite is excellent; it and tenderloins and Iowa chops partially compensate for the loss of all the Texas cuisine when I moved here.

I don't see how a loose meat sammich can possibly make up for the loss of Tex-Mex...

A maid rite is a northern midwest version of a sloppy joe without the sloppy part! There was a Maid Rite diner in Mason City, Iowa back in the 60' and 70's. I believe the building is still there near the city hall.
Been a while since i have been back there. My Mom made them all the time.. Must have been a depression era thing like Spam.

Are you sure about that? I know that Muscatine, Iowa had a Maid-Rite in 1926 that was just a walk-up store...

The original owners of the Iowa location also started franchising the restaurants pretty early on as well before selling out in the early 1980s...

Either way, I've had both the Iowa versions and the Greenville, OH MR's and the ones in Greenville blow them away. I believe they use an ingredient (pickle juice) in the boiling process that I am not sure the others do. If not, they just make them better. So, you Iowans that like MR's, make a pilgrammage to Greenville, OH. Plus it's close to a ton of short tracks, Winchester and Eldora to name two.

One opened here in suburban Denver for abou a month. Sign now says it has been seized for failure to pay taxes.

Too bad, my childhood was in Iowa and I remember them fondly.

P.S. there used to be a White Castle near Denver U., but haven't seen one in the Denver area for years. Frozen sliders from the grocery store aren't the same.

Ohio basically has one place of note. Iowa has loose meat sandwiches everywhere. Take solace that food writers give Iowa the loose meat sandwich credit instead of the BPT when compiling lists because Iowans think they have the BPT corralled and Indiana doesn't exist. As the largest pork producers Iowans are doing their damndest to take credit for the BPT.

BTW, note I said "sandwiches". Baby talk drives me up the wall.

Don't worry I take pride in knowing what drives each and every last one of you up the wall.

Only Sammich is me making fun of southern speak since moving south more than 2 decades ago. Don't hear it so much on the coast but when I was living inland... Oh Brother!

On the way to Cinncy for a Reds game, we stopped at Maid Rites in Greenville, Oh. It was lunch hour, the place was packed and lots of big bags of carryouts...

The sandwiches are everything I remembered. My neices thought they were the bomb and are going to go back with their kids at some point.

Great to find some things just don't change!
