IndyCar Fans 31 and Older Poll

To go contrast the views of those 31 and over against the 30 and under views expressed in the other tread: http://www.trackforum.com/forums/sho...d-Younger-Poll

This is for the older demographic of 31 and older. This one is public too.

The questions and answers exactly the same as the other to keep it apples to apples.

This is my first poll, so if I screw it up, keep your comments to yourself while you, "Get off my lawn kid!"

I like standing starts here for 1 reason and 1 reason only. Our road and street tracks don't offer the chance for all cars to be pointed in the same direction when the green flies. Even St Pete they are still in the hairpin when leaders are gone. Mid Ohio they have to move the start to find an adequate acceleration zone, and it's got a kink to it too.

Our Twisties frankly suck for starts, every one of them. Level the field, standing starts!

Something lost in the over under polls is context and the future. Are you a fan, a dedicated fan or fanatic? And be careful, some people who don't want to admit to being a fanatic, sure come across as that in their discussions of the sport.

What I'd like to find out from the under 30 crowd would be were you a fan ten years ago? Do you have all, most, some, none of the same interests you had ten years ago? Thinking back to when you first started following the series did you think you would become as big a fan as you are now? Based on those answers do you think your tastes will change so that ten years from now you'll sill be a fan or will you have moved on?

Many, not all or a blanket statement, of the younger generations with letters to identify them, seem to 'get into' things and then when something new comes along they move on to the next hot trend. Many I've known seem to be fond of saying how they 'used to be heavy into this or that' but when they get older, changes come to their lives, college, marriage, divorce, kids, job changes, loses they develop new interests that replace the old.

That doesn't mean to not make an effort to attract a younger fans base but the sport shouldn't make wholesale changes to attract a large crowd from that demo if only a small segment of them is going to stick around for the long haul. Because you don't really expand your fan base and five years down the road you're making more changes to attract the new younger audience. Because what you end up doing is losing some of the old fan base and the new one doesn't stick around to replace them.

It's part of what happened to NASCAR. They had the big influx of new fans in the 90's post Days of Thunder, in the Brickyard 400 and the OW era of problems. They were on the upswing but changed the schedule, changed some rules, boogity boogitied their way away from what they were. A lot of long time fans took a step back, the crowd that came in when it was cool cooled to it and moved on and they ended up with the arrow pointing down in just about every category.

I'm for building the most sustainable series in the long term, holding onto the fans you have and trying to add new and younger ones by showing them what you have that might be appealing to them and understand you're only going to hang onto some of them for the long term.

Im surprised that I am in the minority on this one but I would love to see Indycar on the dirt once during the season (Springfield). This is the most diverse & versatile racing series in the world, right? Why not race on the dirt. Lots of dirt racing fans in the USA. Every series out there is essentially one dimensional, predominately one type of circuit. In Indycar they could be racing on big ovals, small ovals, dirt, concrete (Nashville), road courses, street courses, airport circuits. You got it all. And I think fans would love that variety instead of seeing the same things over and over week in and week out like you do in just about every series.

And who knows, you put 1 or 2 dirt races on the schedule and you may attract a larger interest from the USAC ranks.

Indycar needs to be racing damn near every week from March-Sept like Nascar (I understand off weeks for Travel to other countries and the Month of May), with 20+ races. That will keep eyes on you and fans that are getting tired of Nascar racing (And there's alot) may turn to Indycar. Now they never know when they race because there are so many pathetic inexcuseable gaps in the schedule that ruin chances for casual fans.

With so many gaps to close this season, its going to be a very rough finish to the year for Indycar in terms of ratings. Good luck selling sponsorship, Randy. Cant schedule like that.

Are you wanting them to race on a dirt track in the current DW12 or a car designed for dirt tracks?

We just could not allow that age discrimination thread get the better of us that are older and wiser. Those young whipper snappers may THINK they know better, but we ACTUALLY know better through our life experiences and...wait, where I was going with this? I know I was headed somewhere...now what did I do with my car keys?

Happy 4th to you and all of us over 31!

I did not answer the schedule question as I did not like the options. I want to see a mix of great circuits but have no preference as to how many of each type. I don't want a schedule of all 1.5 mile ovals, nor all street circuits.

While my preference is road courses, I would like to see Cleveland instead of Mid-Ohio, or MIS instead of Detroit as examples.
