Faster than a bullet from a gun
He is faster than everyone
Quicker than the blinking of an eye
Like a flash you could miss him going by
No one knows quite how he does it but it's true they say
He's the master of going faster. -George Harrison
This is nothing new, sad to say. The Mods have been a redheaded stepchild now for a decade at least, and every year there's the same type of doom and gloom about purses, schedules, rules, etc. There's actually an independent series now, the True Value Series, that runs under pretty much the same rules as NASCAR, but hits up the local tracks that don't have the sanction (Seekonk, etc.). Mods are the best show in stock car racing and it sucks to see them treated in this fashion.
I read in the article something about them trying to force a spec engine on the teams. Not what the series needs. Every race car in America will be running the same Generic V8 engine by 2020 if we arent careful
And I cant believe it costs $4000 to run a 150 lapper at some tiny bullring
I know very little about modifieds so bear with me. Would driving these cars increase the skill set that it takes to run an ICS car?
I'd rather have 10% of the world interested in the ICS than 50% of US that NASCAR currently has
No fenders but roofs right?
So... ASA went spec motors in the 90's... "dead". Daytona Dash, spec motor.. "dead".
Modified went spec motors.. nail in the coffin? Why don't they leave things alone - it never changes.
Are you listening IndyCar with your spec Dallara?
Every race I run in is in preparation for the Indianapolis 500. Indy is the most important thing in my life. It is what I live for. - Al Unser Jr.
Everything I ever wanted in my life, I found inside the walls of the Indianapolis Motor Speedway. - Eddie Sachs.
These are the NASCAR modifieds we are talking about...

Would this series have a place with ICS as a support series, or even ICS buying them?
Thats not a NASCAR type modified. Thats an IMCA modified. This kind of modified is still required to run the stock front clip which can easily be seen between the exhaust header and the LF tire. NASCAR mods have no such requirement. Tires are much smaller also.
They sort of almost look similar to NASCAR mods but they have virtually nothing in common with them
Really? There are only a few places where that could have happened: Iowa, Milwaukee, Richmond, New Hampshire. If this did happen, my money would be on Richmond. To my knowledge, NASCAR Modifieds have not run west of IRP, so that lets out Iowa and Milwaukee. I doubt it would happen at New Hampshire as I think they are part of the undercard on both of the NASCAR weekends.
Actually they did it at New Hampshire in 1996, I saw it with my own 2 eyes.
1998 too.
Mike Stefanik was also a prospective IRL driver at one point. That would have been pretty cool to see quite honestly.
The first couple of years of Indycars at RIR the Modifieds were the Friday night show.
Later they went to USAC Sprints.
The Mods were great and I love them but it caused some problems with the cold passes.
Mods ran NASCAR rules (hot in garage area, no shorts in the pits) so there was confusion as to where your pass allowed you to be and when you could be there.
When they went to USAC sprints you could be in the garage area any time and stand behind the pit wall anytime except during a race for all 3 divisions (Sprints, Silver Crown, Indycar)
It was a better deal for the fans but the Mods put on a great show while they were there.
And yeah, it's a damn shame how little support the division gets from NASCAR.
There's been doom and gloom rumblings for the series for the past several years, still unclear as to how it will shake out in the end.
"Duty is the most sublime word in our language. Do your duty in all things. You cannot do more, you should never wish to do less" - R.E.Lee
Actually, the modifieds ran with Indycars - both CART and IRL - from 1994 until 1998. And considering the mods were and are still running at Loudon multiple times per annum, I would say that people thought better of Modified racing than Indycar racing in New England.
I wouldn't call 2 times per year "multiple". However, I think NASCAR is really split. On one hand, as stated above, they do treat the Modified Tour like a step child. On the other, they know that the Modifieds put on a great show at Martinsville and New Hampshire. That's why the Modifieds are signed up for both weekends at both tracks. At this point, I think it would be hard to get NASCAR to schedule a 3rd weekend at New Hampshire if the IRL was running there.
