Logistically this has been an epic failure. The not paying the musicians fiasco, looming strikes, and now they're having to deploy troops for security.
Already tired of it. You take a bunch of sports nobody could explain the rules of, wrap them in the flag, and wrap all of that in pseudo-religious hokum and tell people that you are supposed to be for people with the same color passport as themselves. Add in a bunch of non-sport judged tricks like gymnastics and an NBA all-star exhibition.
Rah, rah, rah.
Racing and baseball are on the other channels.
Not trying to be a Debbie Downer, but the Winter Olympics are so much better.
As a kid I always looked to the Olympics as a symbol of what is best about all of us - living up to the ideal of peaceful, honorable competition. Various events over time tarnished that image for me.
Since China, though, my wife has become close friends with someone directly involved with the games. I've learned that just like the rest of the world, the Olympics are dominated by greed, power and ego of Ecclestonian* proportion. I can't say that I'm surprised, but I naively held hope that some degree of purity still exists.
*Actually, that's not fair to Bernie. At least he's up front about the fact that it's all about the cash.

Actually the Olympic Stadium doesn't have a dome or they just weren't able to finish it in time.

Gosh, I remember when I used to eagerly read the sport page to see the medal counts, and wonder if two bronzes were better than one silver, etc.. I don't even watch a single event now. But I did see an interesting show last night on the construction of the swimming pool building.

I enjoyed spectating at the Olympics in Munich in '72.......fortunately I had headed back home before the scheisskopfs moved in to destroy some lives and the games to a degree.....so I do have better memory of it than most....I enjoy the competition of the Games, but the surrounding stuff not so much, like the gouging of those visiting to view the games by the locals, which is why I prefer not to be bothered with attending any more.....I will enjoy the competition on television as there are so many competitions I enjoy and a local velodrome bike racer to try and follow.......and today at least we have more than ABC WWofS one channel programming. It will soon take the place of the Tour......after that it may be time to go through withdrawal with nothing to look forward to each day......so I'll enjoy it while I can as I'm not worried of the collateral stuff of the organizing as that's not my job, not my worry, so long as the events go off as scheduled.

Love the Olympics. My favorite part is when the athletes dance together and swap souvenirs/jerseys/flags/trinkets, etc. - always shows some real joy there!
There are a lot of silly events i don't care about and always some few who try to ruin the events with stupid jackassery, but the basics of bringing together the entire world to compete to be the best is what sports should be about.
No matter how big a cheezdick Juan Antonio Samaranch was or the current and future Bernie's of the Olympics may be, this is what sports should be at the highest level and I'm going to enjoy the best of it while I still can.
Juan Antonio is a sweetheart compared to Avery Brundage......remember that nasty lump of flesh? He hated everyone and took great pride in disallowing athletes for the pettiest infractions......what a nudge he was.

I think one can understand the NCAA and thier ideals by studying Avery Brundage, for better or worse.
To me the biggest problem with the Olympics, there's no one you wish the US beat. China is becoming but not quite there as the hated enemy. The games are too friendly these days to watch as sport. We need more CCCP and East Germans that can win stuff.
The other thing, the internet has opened the world to us. Back then, it was chance to see the rest of the world, since we never saw much of Russia, Poland, Asia, Romania, Denmark, Turkey, etc. besides the Olympics and James Bond movies.
I can't imagine how fun it would be to be an attractive athlete who wins a gold medal early on, and gets to spend the rest of his time in the Olympic Village. That's probably as close to Nirvana as possible.
For many it's a formula for trouble, which is why many go home then return for the closing ceremonies.....remember there are a lot of cameras and video cameras today to record anything for better or worse.
Saw something the other day about the wild parties taht have gone on at past olympics, they interviewed that female soccor goalie.
That was the biggest media overreaction next to the swine flu.
