    Colts 2012(-13?) Season Thread

With camp in full swing, I thought it would be time to start a fresh Colts thread.

I'll start with this incident from Colts camp, where Coach Pagano interacted with a fan wearing a Steelers jersey.

I assume (hope?) that Pagano was kidding with some of his quotes.

Saw on Sunday night sports Tony Dungy made an appearance at the first practice. Showed him joking around with Luck.
I guess that was the first Colts practice he has attended since retiring, according to the report.

I've been following by listening to 1070 the fan podcasts and twitter.....

    The bad:

Appears AJ Edds is done for the season with an ACL.

Mike Chappell has little to no hope for OL Ben Illijana (sp)...tweaked his knee during Sunday's practice (still waiting on results) and said Peyton Manning thought "he was missing something". Second round pick bust (more than likely)....thanks Polians.

Also, make or break year for Jerry Hughes and Donald Brown...

It is still maddening to think how bad the Colts top round picks have been the last several years....

    The good:

#12 has been accurate...yes it has been in shorts and shirts but still.

    REALLY excited about TY Hilton.

Very cool! Nice to see a Coach who can be funny. It's so much easier to dig down deep and give your "all" when you're playing for a cool coach.

Per Mike Chappell - Ben Ijalana out for the season with a knee (same knee he hurt last season).....not good at all. I guess the Polians didn't take the injury bug with them when they were given the boot.

I hope this offensive line doesn't turn Luck into David Carr....

It's only appropriate that we get one more complete bust out of them. It's not just the last several years, though. In my mind I had thought it started about the time that Ugoh was drafted. Then I went back and looked at this:

    http://www.pro-football-reference.co.../clt/draft.htm

You can go all the way back to 2004 and not find a draft where there were more than 2 significant contributors that resulted. It's just absolutely atrocious. Ijalana hurts. That isn't a position where the Colts have room to be any thinner.

I hope this offensive line doesn't turn Luck into David Carr....
A lot of Houston's terrible offensive line problems magically disappeared when they finally went away from Carr. I'm not saying they weren't a really bad unit, but Carr was a statue that held onto the ball way too long. Luck will be much more decisive.

Does anybody know where there's some good video of the practices on the 'net? IndyStar and the local news websites have nothing. Colts.com has videos but they're only post practice interviews. I can't find much worthwhile on youtube.

I did run into this while looking though:

    How weird does that look?

Also weird to see a high school-age Eli sitting with his parents.

Colts trade CB Kevin Thomas (who has been injured, but a bust as well) to the Eagles for two LBs.

I like how the new Colts regime has no qualms trading or waiving players that haven't shown they can play on a consistent basis. The Polians would hold onto to "their" guys for way too long......

Hopefully, Jerry Hughes and Donald Brown will get the memo.

Does it seem a little like Grigson has tunnel vision for the Eagles and Pagano the Ravens?

    Anyway...

That was a pretty big shock when I read it today. They're thinner at CB than any other position, imo, especially considering the large role the nickel plays in this 3-4. He must have been REALLY back in these first few days of camp.

Does anybody know anything about the incoming linebackers?

These kinds of moves aren't unusual. Better to go with the devil you know, you know?

  14. #14
Sure, I just hope that they (Grigson, really) get comfortable trying to deal players to the other 30 teams soon. I'd rather take the highest bidder out of a large pool, in the long run.

Watching the Packers family night scrimmage on the tv at my local watering hole. Weird seeing Saturday in the green and gold.
    It's a Hoosier thing, you wouldn't understand...

Yeah, that is a little weird.

Is that Lambeau in the background getting more renovation done?

I've been following them through the IndyStar website, which I check whenever I can. Its been a long offseason watching all the players come and go. It still hurts seeing Peyton in another jersey (not used to it yet) and was weird getting a Joseph Addai football card this week with him in a Patriots helmet.

However, I don't know if I've been as excited for a season in quite some time. I'm really curious to see how everything comes together.

  18. #18
I agree completely, though I know for certain I haven't been this excited about a season in a long time. Hell, I'm excited for the pre-season.

I love Peyton and I loved the offenses we had during most of his tenure, but the rest of the team; not so much. The defensive philosophy was painful to me. Drafting all of these little, "speedy" guys and watching them break on contact year after year... If I never hear "bend but don't break" again it will be too soon. In 14 years of the Peyton Manning era we had roughly about half a season of good defense. The return game was equally inept year after year. The drafting was HORRENDOUS. We didn't play the free agent market at all but kept overpaying to keep our own overrated players. I was a HUGE Colts fan but was also REALLY tired of Polian and the Dungy philosophy.

This is the team that I always wanted and I wish they had built to begin with. How often does a team have a historic run like the Colts did over the last decade+ and get to wipe the slate clean and do it all over again, having learned from their mistakes the first time? I see guys like Cory Redding interviewed and it just shocks me how big they are. This defense has an edge that has not even been close to present since Tony Siragusa was on the line. The players look like they're really excited about getting to play in a fun, non-vanilla defense. There's a great video interview on colts.com of Antoine Bethea where he's asked about it. He lights up, gets a big smile and starts talking about getting to play the Ed Reed position. Ask yourself this; who seems tougher in attitude and personality, Polian and Dungy or Pagano and Grigson?

It might take a couple of years but I do believe they are building a monster. I just wonder how many rings Peyton would have right now if his team had been built in this way. Luck should benefit from what Irsay learned in the Manning era.

Very well said, Gomer. Not being able to follow things that closely, it was interesting, and exciting, to read what you wrote.
I too am anxious for football this year, I think it has something to do with wanting to get past this hot, miserable summer,
    among other things.

    A rather humorous hater piece:

That guy is in for some long years of disappointment. Hopefully some Colts fans remind him of how things are going in a couple of years when this team is starting to really hit stride.

It's funny how many people forget 1995. It's as if it never happened. Shows his credibility right off the bat. I read no further.

It wasn't a piece I was posting for its insight and objectivity.

Anybody hear whether the roof is open today?

EDIT: Just heard the window is open, and the plan is to open the roof around noon.

BTW, today's Rams/Colts game will be shown live on NFL Network outside the Colts' market. (It's also live on WNDY23 in Indy.)

I just heard that the Rams' 0.1875 winning percentage (15-65) is the worst five-year winning percentage of any team since the 1970 merger.

    Can't wait!

Beautiful fallish day, glad the roof will be open, would love to be there in person to support Our Indianapolis Colts!

I MIGHT be there for the next preseason game.

But the opener against the Vikings could be my first game of the year. I haven't really decided which other games to go to.

(I have some extra tickets for sale on the trading forum for anybody who's interested.)

I'd be interested to know whether anybody goes to the new American Family fun zone outside the north gate. I might take my three-year-old to his first game on 8/30, and I'm sure he'll need some sort of active stimulation in order to have a good time. I'd like some reviews if possible.

I know this might be a long season, but seeing Pagano with the headsets on already makes me feel better...
