Though we need to get someone over there a copy of Illustrator. Or, hell, Inkscape.

    Wow that looks seriously amateurish.

The MS Paint Baltimore thread seemed to lead to a properly drawn map. INDYCAR also had professional looking course drawings at the Baltimore presentation. My guess is that Sonoma has proper layout art. This was from the SPEED.com story:

What do you suspect from a 5 year old.

Other then that it I like those changes. Should make the race seem smoother to the drivers I would expect and widening the track is always good IMO.

IMO good changes, but let's stop using MS Paint.

We wonder why IndyCar is not taken seriously...

the 10-lap caution flags might have something to do with it as well

The only folks who seem to be using MS Paint are the ICS website. The tracks & INDYCAR officials are using more advanced software.

Like the fact that they lengthened teh straight bfore the pit entrance hairpin. Not sure why they didn't do this from teh beginning?!?!?! Andy they keep tweaking the corners of Turn 7....hope they eventually figure it out. LOL

Sorry If This Has Been Posted...(Long Awaited) Sonoma Track Changes

    http://auto-racing.speedtv.com/artic...ation-changes/

Turn 7 will go from a long right hander to a 180 degree hairpin.
The turn 9 chicane will be widened 10 feet on drivers left and 50 feet total on exit
The run to turn 11 will be lengthened 200 feet

I would prefer if they used the Nascar layout for turn 11 that way they have more room to try to do a dive down the side.

So would I, but there's zero runoff area (and no possibility of making any).

BTW, there is already a topic...

I just saw that so my bad

Reasoning behind not using the full hairpin is that the FIA says the cars would be going too fast into turn 1 if they used the full run. Now I don't think they'll be going too much slower this year, but perhaps Cindric, Penske and co were able to stretch that straight as far as physically allowable.

and the track would lose the FIA certification required to host the IndyCar race

In this case, I happen to agree with that assessment. There needs to be a run off in a turn that sharp after that much speed.

But, remind me again why we're following the rules of some elitist French aholes?

Too high speed, with nowhere to go but wall. The FIA have ruled it out.

I thought that was the driver's decision..I didn't know about the FIA rule. But yeah, there's nothing but wall at the end of that straight, and an IndyCar would be going much to fast to deal with it if something went wrong.

because they govern all auto racing and through being part of ACCUS, they have to comply with FIA rules.

However, the hairpin turn 11 makes the old Nurburgring look safe in comparison

Hopefully this spices up Sonoma, after all the racing cant get any worse than what's it been. BUT as I said, Sonoma is a very tough circuit, so I can live with one race like that.

Could be wrong but it appears as if somebody is actually using their head and they will actually use the hairpin instead of that laughable embarrassment of a turn 11 they've been using. Who does that? You have a track thats hard enough to make a pass on, you take away the one solid place they have (hairpin) and cut it in half? Now that I think of it, that might actually have been just as dumb as the Baltimore chicane. There had to be a reason they did that, I cant imagine somebody being that dumb to do that with turn 11.

the French invented car racing back in 1894 so that's why they run the show
