Penske Engines not being sold to Dodge, so is Dodge out?

    http://www.usatoday.com/sports/motor...nes/56826664/1

Tim Cindric sounds pretty clear that the Penske engine shop will not be building Dodges in NASCAR next year. In fact, almost sounds like nobody will.

Dodge is pulling out. It's all over twitter.

It's over. I don't think Fiat sees/understands any benefits to Dodge being in NASCAR, so with Penske gone they've got a clear out. A shame on multiple levels.

63 people at Penske on the engine program
    That's a lot of cost.

    Round number $100k per employee

$6 mil + material and facilities.

Yup, Dodge just pulled the plug. So sad - that Charger rocked.

Nice take by Peter D. Dodge/FIAT, regardless of their feeling on NASCAR, had no choice here. The money to spend to get Petty, a mid-pack team, and Andretti Autosport, an IndyCar team, to NASCAR would have been a waste. Add to that an engine program no longer under the "Penske" umbrella, and there was no choice.

Given that returning to NASCAR would be so expensive and probably fruitless (Roush, Penske, Gibbs, Hendrick and Childress are untouchable), they should immediately consider IndyCar.

Some of the NASCAR engineers in the Mid Ohio ALMS paddock were hoping it was a one year break.

JMO, I think this is why Penske is a Ford team now... he feared the Italians were not geeked about NASCAR

It's a shame, but not a surprise. And I really don't see them coming to IndyCar either. If anything, the SRT Viper program may become to key motorsport point in America. We'll see, of course.

And Dodge gone...damn, I hate that. Dodge and Evernham Motorsports were the crux of my passion for NASCAR back in the day.

Yup that's what several NASCAR writers have also been saying. But reading that other article makes one wonder if its just Fiat who doesn't like being in NASCAR.

With Penske leaving Dodge it is without a premier team and it would costs too much to lure somebody away from where they are. As said they could have gotten Petty and if Michael had gone but, Furniture Row was rumored to be a possibility to switch but they get their chassis and engines from Hendrick so they would be alone and deeper in the hole.

Robby Gordon made a case on WT for his organization to play a big role for Dodge in that he can build chassis and bodywork but didn't sound like he was being considered.

I would say that this would be another end of NASCAR for Dodge until someone else owns the company maybe. NASCAR is at the point where anyone involved will soak up and spend as much money as they can get from anywhere. For a manufacturer more than a team sponsor, they have to be winning races to justify spending the money there.

Going to the new TransAM series might be a better bet for Dodge using the Challenger. Get in on the ground floor and hoping it grows into something.

Evernham was one of my favs as well. Awesome Bill, Kasey, Mayfield, Sadler, Crocker, Riggs, 'Dinger....

Also many of my other favorite drivers over the years drove Dodge. Most of them now drive for damn Hendrick or one of his affiliates or are retired. Dodge was all I had anymore. I'm now totally done with it.

Worth noting is that without Dodge, there would be no muscle cars in Nationwide. Ford was testing the Fusion during the initial Nationwide COT test. Also during the discussions for what the 2013 COT 2.0 should be that Dodge showed NASCAR a stock Charger body design on a COT frame, and the end result is what we'll get next year: stock-appearing stock cars again in NASCAR.

Also worth noting is that for the past several years they were the ONLY brand to have only RWD V8 models representing in NASCAR.

I guess Ralph Gilles was too naive to think Roger Penske has unending loyalty to a manufacturer. He's run nearly all of them in various series. It is a shame, to spend more money on bad teams would have been foolish.

This was the big story on the radio of course and a caller asked if smaller teams could buy up all the parts and pieces and still run a Dodge in 2013.

It was theororized that Dodge may not allow this as it would make the brand look bad if the only teams running Dodge were racing for 35th every week

Some small teams still ran Pontiacs in 2004, so I don't think Dodge could stop it.

I could be wrong, but I don't think a team could run Dodges independently. So many parts must have a 'manufacturers part number'...and I believe that includes the body parts. Without Dodge supplying the new body parts, a team couldn't make bodies that would be legal.

Ralph wasn't naive, he had to know what Penske sensed... that his Fiat boses were not completely geeked by spending $$$ on NASCAR. Roger wanted to sign a long term deal with Dodge & didn't get a very enthusiastic vibe, so he jumped over to Ford that were very thrilled to welcome him back. Gilles was spinning the damage on SPEED last night. (+ doing a good job at this IMO...)

You are probably correct. Buddy Arrington ran several Chrysler & Dodge brands after Dodge pulled out in the late 1970's.

However, is the 2012 "Charger" competitive or even legal for the new era of 2013 CoT's?
