NNS ran around Watkins Glen on RAIN TIRES?!?

    Per Speed,

After some initial precipitation during which drivers lapped the 2.45-mile road course on rain tires, drivers were able to get in some meaningful practice time in preparation for Saturday's Zippo 200.
Wow, how old do you think those tires were? Would NASCAR actually run them in the race Saturday (do they even have enough to do that).

I knew that NASCAR had ideas about rains for their few road races, but had really forgotten about them and thought NASCAR had too.

The race in Montreal in 2008 featured the race run on rain tires.

And in 2009 Marcos Ambrose won the pole on rain tires ...

There was a lot of question about the age of the tires, but they seemed to perform just fine. I don't know, but suspect, that the tires used today were from a newer batch.

If I remember correctly, and that's a big IF, the tires used in Montreal that year were the exact batch barely used years before for the Watkins Glen practice. I swear I remember hearing they had been sent to Goodyear for storage. I could be crazy, though...

When Tony Stewart and Lewis Hamilton swapped rides at WG, it was wet and both cars used rain tires.

    That's my recollection too.

IN SCCA sports car racing, only the very few can afford to buy rain tires each year/season. Most racers are racing "out of pocket", and may buy a new set every 2-3 seasons. Being used to oval track tires limited life span, I find it amazing that sports car rain tires will work just fine after being stored.
3 weeks ago, the team I'm with, used a set from earlier this season, and they were flawless. Unbelievable traction.
Doesn't make sense, but then if everyone had them from the same batch, no problem.
Life time car nut, older than dirt, but never did that.
