Nice read about his first trip to an IndyCar race. Take that, you bashers...)

I love how he went 'as a fan', but used his media status to get full access and since he was a first-timer they gave him the red carpet treatment![]()
This is how I feel EVERY time I go to a race. I LOVE Indycar, and I don't get all the extra's he got!
2012 Races.....St.Pete....Indianapolis.....and The MILE!!! THE MILE!!! THE MILWAUKEE MILE!!!!!!
2013 Races.....Indianapolis (Men's Wedding Party Weekend) and Indyfest 2013!!!
Interestring article because it isn't about a single race or solely about the cars or the drivers, but about the IndyCar experience and the positive atmosphere which surrounds the sport, at least for some. I wonder what Buxton's impression might have been at an oval, where the conviviality of interaction might not have been as great.
Sure, some things need to be worked on but it's been a great year and the future is bright, even without the rose-colored glasses.

This is great press for IndyCar. Who knows maybe he'll want to get involved with IndyCar broadcasts at some point.
I was just going to post this.
His enthusiasm leaps right off the words. What a great read.
...---...
Its kinda funny how professional and competent he makes the Indycar PR department seem and then I read Michael Knights articles on Sunday evening and all he does is incinerate them as being totally incompetent.
But its a great positive article. His is the 3rd or 4th article or comment I've seen from outsiders and how they view the sport. It generally seems like people inside Indycar seem to be pretty happy to be there and really like it. While Jenna F had the door held wide open for her, I've seen her note several times the paddock in Indycar is a pretty nice place to be at times.
I'd rather have 10% of the world interested in the ICS than 50% of US that NASCAR currently has
Great blog!

Buxton is a beast.
It's hard to imagine he walks through F1 paddocks completely unnoticed--or maybe that's easy to imagine.
The good: INDYCAR had enough sense to give the red carpet treatment to a visiting journalist of some stature and Will wrote glowingly about his experience.
It would be the same as when Frank Deford was at Chicagoland to cover Danica, the one time, or if Pat Summerall or Bob Costas came to a race. What you'd like to see is INDYCAR take note and find the people in the series who know someone, other prominent sportscasters and journalists, to bring to races and follow the pattern in search of more good press.
I doubt it will change the minds of the predominately F-1 audience that reads his blog. They aren't going to be converts.
It's such a skewered experience because he was well known to those on the inside, he showed up and took credentials and had unencumbered access to anyone and everything. I'm at 110 Indycar races and I'm not going to get it.
I've long believed that people in INDYCAR, track officials and others on the inside (going back to the CART days) need to experience going to races as a fan to understand the experience and maybe see what needs to be improved. Get the suits out of the golf carts, put the VIP card away and let's walk from the parking lot, carry the bag and cooler through the gate, climb those stands and stairs, wait in the lines at the bathrooms, sit in that traffic to get out of the place. Heck there's a show I don't watch called Undercover Boss where presidents and CEOs get a highly set up and edited but rude awakening to what goes on in their businesses.
"You can't arrest those guys, they're folk heroes"
"They're criminals"
"Well most folk heroes started out as criminals"
And the first comment posted at the end of his article is from some guy who wants to talk about IndyCar in the 70s and 80s and has no fewer than 6 complaints about today's racing. Too funny. Too typical.
The key and obvious point of Will's fun time, is that, well, Indycar is really fun. So enjoy it! I'd have to agree.
Every F1 fan that ever attends an IndyCar race for the first time is always blown away by how close you can be to the competitors and the action.
Wanker!
I had no credential at the Mid-Ohio test and got to talk with Graham and Dixie, and Dave Lewandowski. I got as close as I wanted to the teams and the cars, taking dozens of photos in the garage and all around the track.
At Indy I have a media credential, so I have more access.
But my experience is always one of "I can hardly believe how fun it is."

Awesome read and a very good outsider's view of what we have going on here in America.

"The simple fact is, Indycar works. It works because it is fun. It works because it understands how racing should be and what the fans should get for the price of their ticket.
I have come away a convert. Many were the times I spoke with lifers in the Indycar paddock who were thrilled with the way the season was going. To many of them, Indycar is headed along a path that will see it return to the golden age of the early 90s. And I believe them.
Just like the first time I saw an F1 car in the flesh, like the first GP2 test I attended, like the first time I stood trackside at Monaco, my weekend in Sonoma made my heart sing.
I’ll be honest, my weekend in California saw me fall a little bit in love… all over again."
Two-seater ride with Mario would probably change a lot of folks' attitudes ....
Di he get some special treatment, yes. But it is really a great fan experience. I brought my boss, fatherand father in law. We shook AJs hand, got to say hi to Dario, Scott, Hinch, and in a preview of the race Tag ran into me with his scooter![]()
Congratulations to RHR, & all the winning drivers & teams in the fantastic 2012 season. Looking forward to 2013!
We are all together now. Goal 22-24 races per year split 50:50 oval:RC/SC
What a great blog. Got to be some way to harness that enthuesasm.
Brilliant blog there. They ought to put that in the packet they give to potential sponsors.
Just goes to show how accessible and enjoyable the events are in person. Fun read, and I'm thrilled to hear he had a great time.

I think we as uber-fans sometimes get so caught up in the details we lose sight of the big picture. How wonderful to see a race through a new set of eyes, particuarly one knows what's what in racing.
I ain't quiet, everybody else is too loud.
That is one of the coolest things I have read in a long, long time.
A wonderful expose on a first time visit to one of the great road courses in America.
I am struck with all that Indy Car did to embrace him and make him feel welcome. It just shows that their hearts, which i have said all along about RB, are in the right place.
You just have to wonder why, oh why, can't they replicate that enthusiasm and competence with something as simple as their web site and get 100,000 or one million people to feel the same way?
Good piece. Thanks for posting.
im so glad someone else feels the same way i do when i go to an Indycar race. its way more than a race, its like being around family.
