Not sure if anybody can rightly 'splain this one to me, but what about the stock cars makes it so difficult to run a second groove at Kansas, when we watched IRL cars running 2 or 3 wide easily at the same track?

Downforce
piles of it too!
Aerodynamics Rev,plus the stock cars will grind off more tire if they aren't in an already established groove. Open wheel drivers will generally experiment more on a race track to find out where their car runs best. Danny is right when he says downforce.

Downforce is right as Danny mentions above. IRL cars, and open wheel cars in general, have roughly 3 times more downforce than a Cup car.
At first the track was supposed to be a change from the slip and slide of Dover. The 1.5 tri ovals are the kind of tracks that a lot of drivers say are the easiest or best tracks to drive. The 13 cautions definitely surprised me.
