"You people worry too much. Strive for change. Root for your favorites. Enjoy the racing. Drop the flag." rev-ed, 3/04
If you never got to hear any OFFY's run at full race tilt you missed out.
Now find a Historic race with some entered. The Bark is not the same as when they ran them all out but you can still get some idea of how they Barked.
Awesome! specialy on the mile dirt tracks when you werent so far away from them.

The best chance nowdays to hear an offy growl comes at the Harry Miller get together at the Milwaukee Mile..
I attended last year and took a refresher course on that offy growl.

Remember when the entire Indy 500 field was powered by this engine? I'd say that having two, and soon to be three, engines under the current IRL sanction ain't so bad. Unless, of course, there were thirty-three of these again. I sell display blueprints of this engine if anyone's interested.

Welcome to our forum, SJFast!
Those Offies sure sang their own song, alright. I remember it well.
I don't know if anyone remembers the hit song, from 1970, by Mungo Jerry: "In The Summertime"...but, in the middle of the song all the music stops and there's the sound of an engine slowly blipping its throttle..I swear it sounds exactly like an Offy!
Enjoy your time here, SJ. I wouldn't be surprised if you get some inquiries about your Offy blueprints. Any others?
Yessir....I have drawings, for display purposes, of an early 60's Indy/Offy roadster, an early 60's Offy/Dirt Champ car, an early 60's Chevy sprint car, a late 60's Edmunds supermodified, and the Offy engine. Thanks for the welcome. I've been trying to post and/or reply on this forum for about six months but my old computer wouldn't allow it. I now have new, state-of-the-art equipment (for a few months at least 'til the technology passes me by again...)).

Yes, the offies sounded great. But I remember as a fresh faced kid in 1976, my first pole day. My first experience of the cars were a bunch of Offies tooling along past us on the main straight, slowly warming up. My best friend said "Why are they running so slowly?" I said "Just warming up." Right then Al Unser with one of the Cosworths V8's went by at full song and the suddenness of that high pitched scream made us jump out of our socks! My friend hollered "He's warmed up!"
Shortly after, AJ went by in his V8 and made us jump again. As AJ fans we loved the fact that his car just sounded faster then the Offies.
I fell in love with V8's over the Offy that day, but I do miss the variety of sounds.
My second champ car race was the 1966 Hoosier Hundred. There were a couple of Chevys in the field and the rest was offys. Man that was an awesume drone when they took the green.
