    Night Before 500 complaint

What time did the races finally finish? I left about 10:00 p.m. and they were still qualifying. I realize things were delayed because of the rain but you'd think the race officials could do something to move the program along. They could have cut back to one practice session for all the cars instead of giving everyone two practices.

They could have considered foregoing qualifying and just put everyone right into the qualifying races with the top twelve in each race transferring. Starting position could be determined by points, order of registration, blind draw or some other method. I realize that isn't the best solution in interest of the car owners but in situations like that I think the interest of the car owners and drivers need to come after what's in the best interest of the paying audience.

Also, when I buy a race ticket I appreciate the promoters trying to give me a lot for the money but I think there were a bit too many divisions on the schedule for that event.

how many divisions were there? I thought it was just midgets and something else.

There's no excuse for management ignoring that most fans have a very early get up the next morning, especially since they were hot lapping as early as 8 AM! The fields could be set and racing begun promptly at,say,7 o'clock unless weather intervenes.
This has been a persistant problem with this program and the main reason we now go to the Little 500 instead.

    AH MEN BROTHER!!!

I thought I was the only *issed off Midget fan...until I saw the steady stream of tail lights heading out of IRP starting around 9 PM. IRP has a bad habit of running too many shows in 1 night. I don't think the feature started until after 11:15 or so.

I think we should all tell USAC what we think. I'm going to.

We were in town from California. Decided to go to IRP after going to Indy all day, thinking that there would be midgets and maybe one backup class... what a surprise... there were baby grands, allison cars, modifieds, late models, trucks, and midgets. We went with a group of eight, but they all left after the midgets last chance races, around 10:15 or so. Actually, I was impressed with how quick they got the show going, after the rain. Sure, they could have changed the schedule around, but we left after the midget main, and were back at the hotel by midnight. It was a long night, but I was sure glad we made the trip to IRP!

I went to my first "Nite Before" 25 years ago,'77, and camped on the grounds. That one went real late too as I recall.
The management of IRP doesn't care about my inconvenience so I don't give them my business.

    IRL FANatic posted,

IMHO 3 classes of cars is the most that a short track should run for a day or an evening event. At sometimes 2 classes is plenty, especially when it is a high purse event that draws alot of cars for one of the classes. Too many tracks think that more is better, this is not the case.

A good example of how it can be done right was at Eldora last Sunday night. They had alot of cars and were on the edge of having too many but kept the show moving!!

Approx. numbers on all 3 classes were, 30 USAC Sprints, 70 ALMS Late Models, and 50 Eldora Stocks. They were about 30 minutes late getting started but once they did it was NON-STOP racing all night. The scheduled start time for racing was 8:00pm and they were racing at 8:20 to 8:40. And the only reason they were late is that they qualified the Sprints (2 Laps) and Late Models (1-Lap), along with 1 nasty flip in the Sprint qualifying caused a lengthy delay.

They ran the Eldora Stocks only at times when the Sprints or Lates were in between segments of events.

All in all a well run show considering the volume of cars.

Earl always runs a clean show at Eldora!
I was at an All Star show one night, and he ran the show straight through, because of threatening weather. I was on my way home before dark.
    Have a very blessed day!
