Cool An Exceedingly RARE Opportunity at Our Fingertips

I have a rare opportunity to take a grown man to both the Toronto Molson ‘Indy’ (well, not really Indy, but what's a little dishonesty, particularly outside the border?) c^rt race this weekend, and then to the IRL’s big Michigan Genuine, Real, Authentic Indy race. This guy has never been to an auto race. Never watched one on television. Is only mildly aware of NASCAR. Lived in DC; moved to Boston; now works with me. Had NO idea about ‘the split’ until we met a friend of mine for lunch today in Toronto who is a huge c^rt fan. She started spouting off like some of the c^rt morons who hang out here, and I had to set her straight while he listened intently.

Anyway, he’s getting excited, and I told him I want an objective judgement about which he prefers and why. I’ll be reporting my unscientific findings after the Michigan race. He’s heard both sides of the ‘split’ thingy, so he’s aware of the landscape now.

So far he enjoys the scantily clad Molson ‘Indy’ girls.

I hope he enjoys both venues and becomes a "real" race fan and stays above the fray.................

Please don't ruin him with you're pandering about who's the best and the other league needs to die garbage. Let him enjoy OW racing while it's still around.

I've done a good job of avoiding the subject with my 14 year old. He only knows that Cart is better than the IRL but he doesn't know why.

Someone once told me that most folks want the folks with extreme opinions to just shut up.

    No idea who...

I suspect he'll enjoy himself at both races.

I've been startingly neutral about the racing. I've even avoided dwelling on 'split'-related nonsense. Right now it's cold and rainy in Toronto, so we'll see what happens with the weather, which was shaky last year at Michigan as well.

Oh, I haven't told him about TF or any other forum. He has no idea who 'Defender' is.

I'd like to hear which pits and garages he enjoys visiting more, and which are more fan-friendly. Are you still online during this weekend?

I'll take a wild guess and say that Defender's friend will think 1) the CART party is wild, 2) Toronto throws a helluva bash, 3) the IndyCar teams are more accessible, and 4) the IRL race was much better...therefore validating the opinions of the majority on this site. Thank you, the Great Carnac will be here all week...

Uh, I believe that's who akh was referring to even though he calls him The Great Carnac instead of Carnac the Magnificent.

Gosh, CART fans at a CART site say good things about CART drivers. Boy, color me astonished.

Even more humorous is the way assumptions based mostly on ignorance or hostility have all of a sudden become the way it is. But then I see the names of the perpretrators and realize it will never be any different.

I will not be reporting on any results until after the Michigan race.

    assumptions?.....

first you say you had to set some moron cart fan straight in front of said testee......then turn around and state you have been startingly nuetral.......now you expect us ignorant folk to believe this is anything more than a flawed test and not more your usual "I'm a racing fan, I like the IRL and CART, go to races for both so trust me when I say that CART sucks and we will all be better off when they die and oh yeah the IRL is growing by leaps and bounds and all those folks at the Cart race aren't really there and the IRL ratings are an industry sports trend but Cart's are down because they had a crappie president 4 years ago" BS

    Anyway....

Kudo's to defender for conducting a FAIR and BALANCED litmus test for the newbie fan. So long as he isn't pre-greased and jaded one way or the other, his responses should be less than surprising.
If anything I bet he won't like the fact that he can't see much of the track in Toronto. But he won't realize it till AFTER he sees the Michigan race. Rent one of those Kangaroo TV things if you can....

May your oldest son get caught at a pool party with the Village People.

    (No offense...that was a Carnac-type insult)

Compare that thread to the recent thread on how the IRL's most popular driver treats her fans.

I'm still putting it together. It's a little weird. Not bad weird. But a little weird. Not what I had expected.

I'll post 'er as soon as I've concluded the post-race interrogation.
