I have been in that area. That area seems to be the new area of growth (Avon and Plainfield). Its nice and not run down (only inside Indy is where you get run down towns really).
Town of Plainfield website
I don't a lot about Plainfield, but it seems like a nice town. My sister in law and her family live there, and we see lots of new housing additions on the way to her house.
It's a little outta the way but nice. Not as close as, say, Greenwood or Cumberland.
Grew up south of Plainfield near Mooresville, aXe--have been in Plainfield many times. Exploding growth, but that's true of any town within 30 miles of Indy the past 25 years. Lots of nice neighborhoods, all conveniences handy. Traffic seemed a mess the last time I went through there on U.S. 40 (last year). It's the last place on Earth one would expect to find the North American Center for Islamic Studies, but it's there. Schools have an "open activities" policy, meaning anyone who wants to join an activity can--even if it's something they have no talent or ability in. An article in Time (I think) a few years back said the approach worked surprisingly well.
Best part: You aren't far from Brownsburg and Indianapolis Raceway Park.![]()
It is west of Indy and probably about 10 minutes from the airport via I-70 interstate, if that. Maybe 15-20 minutes from downtown Indy via I-70 as well. The older part of town still has a nice, small-town feel with a downtown area, and a couple of nice parks. The outlying new housing developments and strip malls are nice, just like any other suburban sprawling area. I dont know much about the schools or real estate taxes. I have cousins and friends who have lived there quite happily for years.
My aunt lives and teaches in Avon (which is pretty nice), so I've been through Plainfield a few times. It seems to be a pretty nice town, but that's all I know about it.

im not sure they want a coot like you living there....id say, stay in texas....
Wheldon is a legend now. One of the immortal Gods of Speed.
One of my old roommates from Butler U. grew up there and I have several old classmates and friends who are from Plainfield. Seems like a nice town and the high school seems pretty good...at least judging by the kids who have come out of it and went to Butler.
However, if you are moving there, be sure to check the geographic location of the neighborhood where you want to move to. Some neighborhoods are in the landing and take off patterns of the aircraft flying in and out of Indy's airport, which is close by. You wouldn't want a plane buzzing your roof top and rattling the racing photos off your walls every 20 minutes!

I've worked in Plainfield for 10 years and live just east of there. Its an older looking community, very much a part of the Indy metro area but nearly as much urban sprawl as Avon. Crime rate is low, very nice parks and a relatively high police officer to citizen ratio. There are three state prison's, one of them a juvenile facility, and the Indiana State Police Academy located on the western outskirts. A very middle class town, probably 90% white, 5% black, 5% hispanic, but not a "*******" town. Anyone should be comfortable living there. Lots of churches. You really have to go out of your way to find the Islamic Center... that, by the way, was the place Mike Tyson visited after his release from one of the Plainfield Prisons. No hospital - closest one is in Danville, about a 15 minute drive. New homes are being built on the west side for those who don't mind the glare of prison lights on the horizon. A kid bolts from the boys school every two or three years but the last adult escape was in 1996 - and he didn't get far. Housing costs are a wee bit on the high side. And right now, there is snow everywhere.![]()

How can you take any town seriously when the High School nickname is the QUAKERS?

I've lent quite a bit of money in Plainfield and if you haven't been there lately you haven't been there. And the growth has only just begun.
They are currently building a new hub for the airport and it will be accessible from Plainfield only. I can't remember the name of the road but it jets (pun intended) to the east from 267. Lilly is preparing to build an $80,000,000 building on that road. Supposedly there are several other industrial and big-box retail outlets looking to locate in that immediate vicinity. The growth in that area is going to explode. Between access to the airport and I-70 there will be many, many companies locating there and those jobs will create the rooftops and the rest will be history.
On a different note I have played and coached against teams from Plainfield and have always found them to be a nice mix of class and competetiveness.
I like the place.![]()

It may sound wacky, but the very best way to find the best High School(s) in an area is to walk into the Army or AF Recruiting office and ask.
Recruiters test the kids with the ASVAB test. We know which schools educate the kids the best. We know which schools should be burnt to the ground (during summer and vacant of course), and try from a fresh start.
I had 7 small town schools. 2 schools every kid would pass the ASVAB, 3 schools 60/40 odds they would pass, and the other 2 schools there was no hope of the kids passing. Those 2 schools graduated rocks with lips. (public education / school system problems is for another thread)
Dont be shy, Recruiters like to meet people in the community and employee's of local companies. Just walk in and ask.
Plainfield, I thought that was on Highway 41 south of Terre Haute?????? We played baseball against them?
I gotta buy a map.

Plainfield is the original and current home of Galyan's sporting goods stores.
Hummel Park is excellent!
You would be very happy with the choice.
