    DST, the final word...?

    Check out the sidebar

    Pros & Cons

    EASTERN OPTION
What would our days be like if Indiana was in the Eastern time zone and observed daylight time?
If Indiana was aligned with Eastern time year-round and observed daylight-saving time, daylight hours from early April to late October would shift an hour later in our day.

    On July 15
    • Sunrise: 6:29 a.m.
    • Sunset: 9:11 p.m.

    On Dec. 15
    • Sunrise: 7:59 a.m.
    • Sunset: 5:21 p.m.

Pros: Synchronicity with a major city — New York; business-friendly; heaven for golfers AND EVERYONE ELSE, who could work a full day and get in 18 holes OR ENJOY THEIR EVENING.

Cons: Bad news for farmers -- their work day would start late and end late; parents would have the task of putting kids to bed when it was still light out.

    CENTRAL OPTION
What would our days be like if Indiana was in the Central time zone and observed daylight time?
If Indiana was aligned with Central time year-round and observed daylight-saving time, daylight hours from late October to early April would shift an hour earlier in our day.

    On July 15
    • Sunrise: 5:29 a.m.
    • Sunset: 8:11 p.m.

    On Dec. 15
    • Sunrise: 6:59 a.m.
    • Sunset: 4:21 p.m.

Pros: Synchronicity with a major city -- Chicago; business-friendly; kids less likely to wait at bus stop in the dark; not as objectionable to many farmers.

Cons: Early sunsets in winter mean dark afternoons.

Look at the Cons for Eastern and the Pros for Central.

How many freakin' farmers are there in this state BY PERCENTAGE???

    Please...

I'll take the Eastern option. The con side of the Central option is brutal - sunsets at 4:30 in the afternoon in the winter? Winters are bad enough around here without that. Dark commutes, longer, colder evenings. Of course, both candidates for gov like that one...

I vote to leave it just as it is. Why mess with something that's perfect and has so many people upset all the time. Indiana, Arizona and Hawaii are the only " smart" states

IF we are to change, we are geographically in the Central Time Zone. Sunset at 4:30 in the winter is not that big of a deal. The drive home is mostly dark anyway, be it 4:30 or 5:30, it's normally pretty dismal that time of the year.
    Have a very blessed day!

I'm a late riser, but I am close to a LOT of people who could benefit from the earlier sunrise in the winter.

crispy, you're doing an awful lot of ASSUMING that people "enjoy" more light later in the evening, just because YOU enjoy it.

The state should not be in the business of legislating for pleasure. They need to legislate for the common good.

Mitch Daniels made a good point in the Sunday Star: If we are Central, we are no more than 2 hours away from any part of the continental US--a real boon for people who do business with the Left Coast.

I can't believe it, but I'm almost FOR DST now--but ONLY IF WE ARE ON CENTRAL TIME!!!

Ahh, but isn't Eastern Standard Time (in the summer) equivalent to Central Daylight Time anyway...

    Horsepucky!

The sidebar in the story DOESN’T show the graphics that are in the newspaper article. They do a good job of showing when it would be light and dark in July and December for all three options (No DST, CDST and EDST).

If you placed these three graphics in front of everyone in the state and let them choose WITHOUT all the BS pros and cons concocted by people with an agenda, I would be happy to adopt the most favored option.

MOST people do favor more light in the evening in the summer.

    I'm still for DST.

    Central, Eastern - I don't care.

I agree....why do people change the clocks anyway? Is it because of the tilt of the earth? (yeah I think i slept through this lecture in one of my classes)

Of course it is. Which means that we already have the benefit of DST in the summer, without the earlier darkness in the winter!

But, finally some people are ATTEMPTING to show that being in sync with Chicago might actually benefit the state. For example, GOP gov. candidate Mitch Daniels says he knows of at least one airline hub that has avoided Indiana because of the inherent scheduling difficulties. Also, today's articles in the Star provide other (albeit anecdotal) evidence of the problems of not "switching" twice a year.

I would rank our options as follows:

    1.) Keep the status quo.
2.) (a close second) CST and CDT.
3.) (a distant third) EST and EDT (double DST!).

    No, that's seasons.

Really, there is no reason to change clocks. Don't worry that you don't get it, because it doesn't make sense in the first place!

Yeah, we're so smart we'd rather look stupid than read a manual and change the time on our clocks.

As one raised in Indiana and now living outside of it let me just saying that clock re-setting isn't all it's cracked up to be.

In the original post in this thread Crispy appears to be psuhing the Eastern option because it would put Indianapolis "the city where Apple is it's middle name" (tell me they no longer use that embarrassing slogan) Nsync with "the Big Apple"...

and because he wants to play 18 holes of golf after work.

Hmmm? I don't think that the argument that is going to win the day... Golf isn't as revered in the real world as those in the cult want to believe. I mean we do all still remember how Golf got slapped around when they tried to keep that boy with the bum leg out of their game and attempted to make the arguement in court that Golf was a real sport played by real athletes... right?

Naw keep it like it is... and avoid the wear and tear on your timex.

You guys screwed with the High School Basketball tournament... didn't that teach you anything??

No, what's really stupid is that people can't keep track of Indiana's time. It's really very simple, actually.

Now Ren there are no Dumb posts...

Wait, suggesting that turning the clocks back 100 years and expecting there to be an Indianapolis International Airport or a plane to approach it in, okay...

Maybe that wasn't the most thought out post in the forum today.

The "rolleyes" smiley is usually taken as a comment on stupidity, just like in real life. Sorry if I misread you.

People that don't enjoy summer evening sunshine are known to be levity deficient...

Hey, I enjoy summer sunshine. I just don't think it needs to last until well after 9 p.m. Don't forget to add twilight to the equation; summer twilights are longer than winter twilights because of the angle at which the sun sets in the northern hemisphere.

Move a little bit west, and it there will still be tinges of light around 11 p.m. in Terre Haute in late June! You'll have plenty of light by which to enjoy the fragrant scent of that city!

Anyway, I like taking twilight and night-time walks to avoid the sweltering heat of summer. That would really suck to have to push the walks to 10 or 10:30. But as long as you get in another 18, I'm cool with that...

dog speaks the truth. I am from Kentucky, and I think we're dumb for observing DST. I think the folks in those border counties that observe it must be even dumber to follow us at something.

    Says who?

I prefer light in the mornings when I am going to work, and when I head home. Only way I can do that in a DST during the winter is to go into work later, and that ain't an option. My bosses might like it, but I sure wouldn't!

    Arrrgh! Exactly.

Under the Central DST system it would be dark by 4:30 P.M. in the winter thereby eliminating your much needed light.

Under the Central DST system in the summer it would be the same as it is now (with EST all year round), and at both drive times, light isn't an issue.

Under the Eastern DST system in the WINTER you would have your light as it is now, generally when you head home. You can't have it both. There's only so much daylight. Regardless, NO WORSE OFF.

Under the Eastern DST system in the SUMMER that light you get from 4:30 A.M. to 5:30 A.M. is effectively moved to 8:00 P.M. to 9:00 P.M. You don't lose any light unless you drive to work at 4:30 A.M.

The question that I answered is... If everyone in the state of Indiana were asked "For the period of April to October, where do you prefer that 'extra' hour of daylight? In the wee hours of the morning? Or later in the evening?"

When asked THAT QUESTION, and not that confusing mumbo-jumbo about degrees latitude or Chicago business centers, what are MOST people going to say?

Ren wants to invalidate that question because it is just a "personal preference" issue. BS.

    Talk about a leading question!

If we had a referendum (worded in a much less leading way than that!), and a majority of those with an opinion chose EST/EDT, then I would hold my nose and accept it.

Then I would move to Arizona.

The question should simply be "Which time zone should Indiana follow?" The referendum shouldn't lead anybody; they can do their own research.

Any guesses on who the airline is? Indy is lucky to have Southwest serving them. I'd take that any day over someone like the (soon to be even-more-bankrupt) US Air, or "Hey let's change the frequent flyer program again" Continental.

    I'm good with that.

    The referendum could ask:

    1. Stay on Eastern time and do not adopt Daylight Savings Time.
    2. Stay on Eastern time and adopt Daylight Savings Time.
    3. CHANGE to Central time and do not adopt Daylight Savings Time.
    3. CHANGE to Central time AND adopt Daylight Savings Time.

I am certain that option #2 would get the most votes.
