    Wink IMS Press Conference Thursday

I know we aren't supposed to tease the non-TSO folks, but I'd sure like to have a web cam to watch Defender's head explode when he reads the one that just hit my inbox.

Just figure the one thing he rails against the most and you'll have a good idea what the PC might be addressing...

The curious part of this is that our media "insider" seemed to be completely unaware.

Oh, I'm aware all right. But I don't work there nor am I in a position to offer any recommendations. Like the vast majority of those who contribute here I am merely some goob on the Internet. I'm OK with that.

My head won't explode either way, either.

It's their bed and they'll make it and sleep in it, mostly alone. Even though the one to which they will commit will continue to sleep around on them with the fat country gal for as long as they want.

I hope there are no regrets.

I would strongly urge them to get EVERYTHING in writing. ABC may not be around much longer as we know it.

Let's see how much of the moolah keeps rolling in. Words you probably won't hear: 'Time buy.'

Perhaps not, but an network extension to 2009 will aid in the search for one.

Good news: the IRL is a valuable enough property to negotiate an extension.

Bad news: the IRL is a dirt cheap property.

When the alternative is paying to be on television, the good vastly out weighs the bad in this situation.

Oh really? And how has that helped in the past few years?

And just who is the series sponsor now? Riiiiight.

Who were the previous series sponsors...and how long did they stick around?

    Uh-huh.

Very informative post. Is your argument that being guaranteed live ABC/ESPN coverage for the next 5 years would not make the league more attractive to a potential league sponsor?

It does not guarantee it will happen, but is much more likely than a series on time-buy on cable or something similar.

It certainly didn't hurt. You'd have to be pretty obtuse to think it didn't help. Like complaining that a cast on an arm broken yesterday doesn't help because the arm is still broken. Go ahead, take that darn thing off It don't help none

The last contract helped attract manufacturer sponsorship worth millions, and relegated the other series to time-buy land.

This contract offers more stability - crucial to being able to attract and retain sponsors, and therefore teams, and therefore drivers. The IRL has needed stability in this area.

I wonder if Dixon's contract signing is related to the potential the TV contract implicated? That could bode well for other guys, too, like Sam, Buddy, and others... gives them time and media access to build a following.

More exposure, more stability = better value... which can make funding rides for talent easier, and ridebuying less so. It's a step towards giving newer teams more value in the marketplace, more to "sell" to cover engines and driver contracts.

If IRL teams were selling stock, we would have seen their value increase yesterday. It's a positive move in the solution to Indy Car's cost imbalance.

Hmmmm. And how obtuse do you have to be to actually believe that it has helped previously, or will in the future?

Again, a few very simple questions which have gone un-answered.

Who currently is the series title sposnor?

Who have been the series sponsors, and just how long did they last?

Answer those questions, then decide who you want to degrade as being "obtuse."

There is no current title sponsor for the league. The IRL is on the lookout for one. Is the lack of a title sponsor bad or good? It mainly depends on personal orientation. If you're like most race fans, it's not something about which you give much thought. If you are an emotionally retarded hate site contributor, anything that could even remotely be used to paint the IRL is seized upon with the intensity usually reserved for comments about hammers.

Who have they had in the past? Pep Boys, who became the vicitm of their own excesses, failed to pay their bills, got sued, and, most importantly, got tossed.

Then there was Northern Light, a fabulous, dedicated corporate partner. You could not have asked for more enthusiasm from its head guy David Suess. But Northern Light had the same types of problems as most other dot.com businesses around the same time.

I am sure the IRL appreciates what help it did receive. It has thrived without them. If another comes along, great too.

I can hardly wait for the race again this year.

"I bring my hammer to work every day," he said, smiling. He quickly added, "I mean, we're trying to build our series every day." The response occured when answering the question "if he had driven the final nail in CART's coffin?" Honda had just announced they would join the IRL as an engine manufacturer in 2003.

That's one comment over 8 years, Boddington. Please point out the others.

And, of course, that comment is in the same league as the "peeing on the brians" comment by his counterpart in CART, right?

The only scorched earth at Indy is the result of the bomb dropped by TG.

He got what he wanted, now live with it.

Complete, 100% bulls***. Those who boycotted need to get over themselves.

Tony has taken the high road the whole time while building his series. If the other guys had, the sport would most definitely not be in the shape it's in.

You (generic...not aimed at any one poster) may not like him, but tough. He won. If you (generic...not aimed at any one poster) can't deal with this fact after ten years, y'all need to find something else that piques your interest and shut the he11 up for a change.

What has he won? Honda ,Toyota, Penske, Rahal, a smaller TV viewing audiance than NASCAR for several events, to the big one? Please explaine it, because I don't get it. The worlds biggest motorsports event, is just another event, Tony Stewart not running gets more coverage than who is 33rd? NASCAR has some trouble getting 43 cars for 36 races and Indy has trouble getting 33 for 1? Jimmie Johnson says the Hendrick number is $100,000 mil. for 4 cars, a season, that woul cover the whole IRL grid. Reality stinks, I want to see the best 33 oval track drivers in the world, Marty, Sarah, IV, P.J. Larry, aren't them.
