I subscribed for many, many years.

I always wondered why they never came up with an online forum such as this one. (Or did they?) It seemed a natural. And they sure had, and have, a large faithful following.

I've always wondered why editor Chris didn't write a book.Nobody has lived the history of the sport like him, definately one of a kind.

Chris Economaki probably hasn't written a book because he isn't done collecting those stories we love.
I saw a rent a cop trying to run chris out of a non spectator area at the 96 Del Mar, CA S/C race. I thought of going up to Chris and getting him to autograph my program in front of the kid so that he knew he was messing with royalty. Then i thought better of it, realizing that Chris didn't need my help outwitting a security guard.
As soon as i get my copy i turn straight to Chris' Editor's Notes.

He'll never stop with the stories. I just hope he doesn't wait too long for the book...he's no chicken, you know.

So did he outwit the security guard?

For a few years back in the mid 70's I sold NSSN at Indy and MIS for Chris.

35 cents, I got to keep 18 cents. He always treated me like I was doing him a huge favor, very nice guy.

That security guard couldn't get a job anywhere west of Daytona Beach after that ! he was last seen ......
I don't know what happened to him...?
But i know Chris didn't mention the hospitality he received at Del Mar in his Column. I'm sure that was a key reason why that race was never run again.
That day i experienced Silver Crown cars on a mile track under a covered grandstand, exhaust notes echoed...Good Stuff.
Sat next to former driver/ builder named Ray Jimenez, got a few good stories out of him too.

I had a bit of a scoop when the Bahre family was in the early stages of building their track at Louden.

Being an avid reader of NSSN at the time, I thought I'd call them with my little tidbit of information. I figured I'd give it to the some editor to pass on to Chris. But to my amazement, Chris himself answered the phone and we ended up chatting for quite a while.

I second what's been said above. Chris is a legend AND a nice guy. A pretty rare combo.

I posted the same thing at Speed in two different forums. One in general motorsports the other in dirt/oval. Two hundred people looked at the post. Only one comment in the dirt/oval section. I guess they don't read NSSN over at Speed.

    Perhaps there is a rift?

One would think 70 years deserves a Wind Tunnel appearance.
